Arsenal v Aston Villa review – Giroud hat-trick and Arteta goal cap another St. Totteringham’s day

With about 30 minutes left of the final Arsenal home game, what had looked like being a great day for the Gunners was going pear shaped, as our north London rivals Tottenham had pulled a goal back away to Newcastle to make it 2-1, while Arsenal had failed to capitalise on a great early headed goal by Olivier Giroud and Aston Villa were threatening to equalise.

Fast forward a bit and the Emirates crowd were in raptures of delight as MIkel Arteta capped his last game as a Gunner with an injury time goal to add to Giroud’s well taken hat-trick after the news from Tyneside went from the sublime to the downright ridiculous as the spuds imploded and went down 5-1 to the relegated Magpies who played the last 25 minutes a man down.

So it is St. Totteringham’s day yet again and this is perhaps the sweetest as it looked so unlikely just a few weeks ago. As the Arsenal fans taunted, it’s happened again, it’s happened again, Tottenham Hotspur it’s happened again.

The game itself was pretty tame after a strong start from Arsenal but we came strong again at the end and with Newcastle doing us a huge favour, the fans went home happy and the Gunners secured second spot. Happy days Gooners.

    1. Santa May not come,.. But Saint Totteringham will.. Love you Saint!!

PS: Special Mention for rosicky (Forever gooner) and Arteta (who cried)..

      1. 5things we’ve learned this game:

        1- Cech won golden glove
2- Ozil got assist (break the assist record?)
3- Arteta ended his Arsenal career in a high note
4- Feels so good seeing cazorla bossing the midfield
5- IT IS ST. TOTINGHAMS DAY YA’LL

Side note: I JUST HOPE WENGER DON’T GET CARRIED AWAY LIKE EVERY SEASON AND SAY OH WE HAVE GIROUD LIKE HE IS RONALDO OR MESSI… and actually goes and buy a top striker because every one knows now that we need a striker.

    2. Yippee!…………right about time………Let the bus parade begin

Giroud bang with a Hatrick against the worst team in the League ….. Wow…his season starts now….

He’s world class…Give him a fat new contract!

Where was LiL mozart and the farewell anthem we prepared for him?….has his contract being renewed?

      CONGRATS boys!!!

      1. Interesting stat for you Soopa!!
        Giroud 16G 6A 2425 mins (PL) – Goal contribution every 110.22 mins
        Kane 25G 1A 3370 mins (PL) – Goal contribution every 129.61 mins

        1. Do people not like facts and stats?? ahh well. don’t let little things like goals and assists get in the way of a good ole player bash!

    3. ALERT: When arsenal is driving there’s no need for looking into the mirror, spurs are definitely behind. Just watch the front.

  1. Tottenham is officially cursed to forever finish below Arsenal. If we finish 17th, they will finish 18th

    1. Yes!!!!!!!! Just Yes!!!!!!

      @john legend
And when we win the league Spurs will finish where???????

      1. @goonerboy,

If we win, they will finish 2nd. What will make such a season wonderful is we will win it on the last day and celebrate St. Totteringham’s day and the League.

    2. then in every wish and every made-up scenario and reality every year spurs should finish second 😀

      1. This is Arsenal ….that down there my son is the spuds! It’s been like that since the down of time!!! Happy st. Totteringham’s day everybody!!!!

  2. Tottenham,
    Mind the gap,
    Tottenham Tottenham mind the gap,
    It’s happened again,
    It’s happened again,
    Tottenham Hotspurs,
    It’s happend again.
    Whaddya think of Tottenham? “SH%T!”
    Whaddya think of Sh%t? “TOTTENHAM!”

    That’s alright

We h@te Tottenham and we h@te Tottenham

We h@te Tottenham and we h@te Tottenham

We h@te Tottenham and we h@te Tottenham

    We are the Tottenham h@ters

    1. They wanted to finish above us like crazy but they stay where they belongs (Behind Arsenal).

Goodbye to Tomas Rosicky and el-capitan Arteta, what a guys, and then there’s flamini. Thank you all.
Gonna miss ma Arsenal. Waiting for august already.

  3. Horrid season overall but damn it feels good that Spurs, having the best season in 50 years, still manages to finish behind us. 😀

Happy St Totteringhams day everyone! See you in August!

  4. Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!
Tottenham’s best season ever in so many ways.. But they still choke on the final day 5-1 to a relegated Newcastle for us to leap in front. Too goooooooood!

  5. Boom!!!! we finish above Spuds!!

..but G rude should’ve done better over the season when needed

        1. can’t talk about the season its too late for that.very happy that we managed to overtake spurs let celebrate st totteringhams day :-).we need serious work to be done on our team to be ready for nxt season coyg guys!!,

      1. He should be our second striker…sign a big name and I’m sure giroud will fight for his place…

        1. he’s always been 2nd striker material, why AW won’t sign a damn world class one is beyond me. It’s embarrassing Ozil couldn’t break the record when he had 18 assists with months left in the season. And its not like he stopped creating chances either. Our forwards just stopped scoring.

    1. doesnt change the fact he was horrible since January. Wasn’t the only poor player though. Middle of the park became a mess and Sanchez lost his touch for several months. Ozil and Cech have been our only consistent players throughout the year.

  6. Shout Out to Newcastle. Down and relegated but still put up a fight against Tottenham and were on fire with a man down. So many relegated teams will show no interest.

Giroud finished the season on a high with a hat trick. Like I said in a post’ Giroud still have his part to play in Arsenal. He should stay and compete with a New striker. The new striker been our first choice…

Disappointed to not win the league but this is the first time since 2005 we are finishing second.

Wonder what’s going through Tottenham fans and players mind. They really wanted to finish ahead of us. Oh well……

  7. And there goes Giroud all but confirming his place as starting striker next season

    1. Mixed feelings about that hattrick. Now Wenger will say Giroud has proven himself to be reliable. He should be back-up striker and not leading Arsenal’s attack.

    2. Giroud seems to perform only when he wants to, anyone else notice Silent Stan watching today? Wonder if that made him perform…

I look forward to the day when we can finally see a CF who fights for his place and fights for the club to arrive.

  8. We finished 2nd! Just think of what could have been if we didn’t bottle some of those matches?

  9. Now I know that Tottenham Hotspur is forever a cursed football club. Gunners for life!

  10. Leicester finishing 10points clear above us

..if only we did better in some games( soton A/H Chelsea A/H Swansea, manUre A, westbrom H Liverpool A/H

    1. Swansea (H) 3
      C Palace (H) 2
      Chelsea (H) 3
      Southampton (H) 2

That’s already 10 points and all at home.

    2. not about the points, the mentality of the club is horrendous and needs to completely change for us to win something meaningful or we’ll keep bottling it no matter what. We’re incapable of winning the title. And now we’re celebrating finishing above spurs as if we won the title. These are the reasons Wenger keeps getting away with achieving nothing. Sad to watch the standards of our club lower so much.

  11. Good bye Tomas and Mikel. You define class and i feel privileged to have watched you.

  12. Happy St Totteringham day! Even better now that Wenger stated in the conference we are looking for a striker to compete with Giroud

    1. Part of me feels that Wenger has always wanted to find someone to be main CF and allow Giroud to be cover/comp for him, iirc wasn’t Giroud bought to cover Glass Legs RvP?

The board bought Welbeck and he has all the attributes… but not the finished product and we have suffered from having Giroud as main CF. Welbeck has become Welbroke as well, so much time with Jack, makes you wonder how they haven’t developed a big bromance…

I hope, I really reeeeeeeeeeeeeally hope that the board will back Wenger in which-ever CF he wants.

Then tell him to win the title if he wants a new contract.

  13. Flamini.rosicky and arteta have had good times at this club. Wish them all the best.

  14. Fantastic news, second place and above spurs.

But its papering over the cracks, we were effectively out of the title race after losing to manu and swansea at the beginning of march and have finished ten points behind Leicester.

My concern is that coming second will mean that the necessary changes will not happen. After all, wenger has been proved right, the squad was good enough to beat manu, manc, chelsea, pool and spurs, the emergence of leicester was totally unexpected and unprecedented, no-one could have predicted that!

  15. Two things are guaranteed in life; Tottenham finishing behind Arsenal and everyone at one point, will die
Somethings are meant to be, however much buttocks try to hurry, it will always remain behind. Good bye Rozza and Arteta, we love you!

  16. How many goals has giroud scored in UCL??5??and a couple in fa cup..that’s a total of around 24 goals…that’s not bad at all…all i m saying is we bring competition for giroud…

  17. I’m taking my beer. my happiness couldn’t have been better. Thank you Newcastle, thank you Giroud!

  18. I wish they finished 2nd. And because they can’t finish above …,…………………..

  19. i am thinking wnd is a pretty good season, above all except LC, who had a magical season, and who we beat twice, by a total of 7-3… united, chelsea, or liverpool will not play in the UCL…

  20. What a shocker i was actually ok with the third place finish, because i thought they(tots) were the best London Team this year, but to be humiliated 5-1, that must hurt all Tots fans.

Pity to see the 3 players go, which they would be leaving with the trophy, because they have been out standing contributors to arsenal, but as we know they have to go, to make space for new stars and incoming buys.

On to the Euro’s, this is my take on it, if you going to pick a premier league twenty-three member squad from this season, Wilshere would not be in the 30 much less the 23, even looking at the game time given to wilshere fitness is a major worry and him getting fit over the course of the Euro’s would be ridiculous.

The only arsenal player who would truly deserve a place in the Euro’s would have been Welbeck who is injured, so i think it would be advisable that Wilshere continue training at the club and be truly ready for next season

    1. In the words of the one and only Hector Bellerin!!
‘6 MOTM’s in last 7 England games, but people will still doubt him.. (emoji)’
Wilshere gives England something they don’t have anywhere else. He’ll go to the Euro’s. Hope he has a scorcher!

  21. I hope all you fickle Arsenal supporters don’t think we have had a good season. Finishing 2nd has been a bonus to a abismill year. We need new blood for the next season.

    1. Can’t the fans enjoy the small victories?
No we didn’t win the EPL, should we mope about and moan like little emo kids?

Let us enjoy today and get on to the moaning tomorrow…

    2. Finishing second is a bad year? We have won more games than any team except Leicester. Maybe you should talk to some fans of the 18 teams below us?

  22. 2nd and above the spuds, shame we didn’t win the EPL but what a final day!

Was anyone else keeping track of the spuds game and think “WTF, 4-1 now 5-1 so fast, DAMN!!!!!!! Go Toon army go!!!”

Just for todays game I will be wishing them a speedy return to the EPL, that you Newcastle for helping us to have a wonderful day ^.^

  23. I don’t belief in magic, but I belief in St THFC day.
    Bahahahahhahahhahaa goorners let celebrate
