Arsenal v Newcastle Player Ratings – Ozil the only bright spark again

Yet again we see a match where Arsenal had over 70% of the possession and another 23 shots on goal, but we only won thanks to Mesut Ozil’s wonder volley in the 23rd minute, and Petr Cech standing firm, not that he had that much to do!

So here are my ratings…

Cech 7
Had another easy game as most of the action was in the other half, but did his job when needed.

Bellerin 6
Was reasonable in defence and up the wing but with no end product as usual lately

Koscielny 7
Definitely a lot better than some recent performances, but maybe Monreal made him look good!

Monreal 6
Just did his job, hardly impressive

Maitland-Niles 7
Looking a good addition to the side and performed well despite him not playing in his best position.

Xhaka 5
Why does Wenger keep relying on him. he has gone backwards and showed his frustration by getting a totally unnecessary yellow right at the end.

Wilshere 7
Looked lively despite his second game 3 days although he played a bit deeper this time around. Missed another easy chance.

Iwobi 5
Kept losing the ball, running into walls, misplaced passes and wild shooting. Who does he think he is, Alexis Sanchez? I couldn’t wait for him to go off. Welbeck was only a slight improvement.

Ozil 8
The only bright spark on another dismal day. Excellent goal

Alexis 5
Useless! See Iwobi above…

Lacazette 5
Was left alone up front but got his chances and blew them all. For once I was happy to see him go off, although Giroud didn’t look much better!

  1. too generous- as usual
do you consult ty or chris from arsenal fan tv or what?

im bricking liverpool next week, they could have us leaving statements on crimewatch

ive started watching man citys games- feels disloyal but im doing it,probably just curiosity

    1. I would never watch another team who are playing well over my team even if they are in a woeful form. MY TRUE LOVE IS ARSENAL,AND YOU DON’T CHANGE YOUR BABY (TRUE LOVE) EVEN IF YOU FIND SOMEONE MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN YOURS.
      SHAME ON YOU…

      1. Still watch arsenal obvs. U need to learn to read sukh-job just meant also watch city at times

But I appreciate football is meant to be entertainment…peps philosophy style of play is just that
No harm in seeing football played the right way .but yes I’m conflicted

          1. Who cares! Go and support City then as you are so keen to say how wonderful they are . And on an Arsenal site too. A good way to lose friends, Muffdiver. I love dogs but I don’t spend my time writing about them on here, a football site, and only have done so now to show you how wrong you are. By all means use other clubs as a comparison in your comments . But that is totally different to saying how much you watch and love to watch them. You should decide WHICH club you truly support and stick to wrirting about them.

              1. Personal abuse is widely recognised as the refuge of people who have lost their case. I have clearly hit a nerve and found out your City love and you don’t like the truth, so you use abuse. How childish and how unfaithful to Arsenal you are.

        1. Anything wrong in watching other big games apart from Arsenal? I watch games involving the other big five – Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs – when they play each other. How else am I to assess them? I am not just an Arsenal fan, I am a football lover.

      2. Well said, true fan, unlike the fair weather “muffdiver”. I dislike much about my club(note:club, rather than team) and also recognise there is lots wrong with the team (thanks to Wenger) BUT would never prefer to watch another team above my own team; the club and team of my heart. And all TRUE FANS will feel the same.

        1. oh dear another who cant read
          wish you well with illiteracy
alot of people have achieved alot inspite of it

          1. It’s just the way you said you feel guilty about it, it sounded like you were doing a bit more than watching them when they’re playing in the Manchester derby or when they face Chelsea etc, which most people do tune in for. So maybe people took you up wrong, you feel guilty about something most people have no guilt over, prob means you’re a better shade of red and white than most.

…Or it could be that you took the piss one too many, and they saw their in here, with this …where they knew it could hurt.

        2. Muffdiver please go to the website that supports Man City and send your comments to them. You really don’t have to use this forum. I am a supporter of Arsenal football club and do not enjoy watching other teams more than watching them even if they are not playing the most amazing football!

    2. I suspect , from the way you phrase your comments you are a quite young and, as yet, uncommitted fan , in your heart. What the hell is “PROBABLY just curiosity ” supposed to mean, otherwise? “Probably” means that it might NOT be just curiosity and actually the start of your NEW preferred love. If you are going to write meaningfully and do not wish to be understood, then I suggest you pick your words more carefully. You give the strong impression you are a new glory hunter and only YOU know for sure. But I know what I strongly suspect!

        1. Are those four paltry “say nothing” words the best you can do to answer my apt comments? I am now more sure than ever, since you don’t deny it , or explain yourself I notice!

  2. Earlier even when the whole team would be poor, ozil would be the poorest and alexis the brighest. Fast forward and now these days when we have an ordinary day,Ozil has an extraordinary one and alexis is just lost somewhere. Wonder what has happened to him-looks like he is saving his energy for the club he wants to play for next season as if he has nothing to do with us. I didn’t expect this from him at all.

      1. Alexis has really let us down. If I didn’t think otherwise I’d say he’s trying to force us to sell him in Jan. But why would he not just wait six months and have it all his own way. Alexis is the type that if he wanted to score against newc there is fukk all newc could do to stop him.

  3. Giroud didn’t look much better? Within minutes of coming on he set up Jack with the best chance of the game. Last week same thing setting up Jack again for a great chance. Giroud is a target that works well with players that follow the ball and are in the general vicinity for his knockdowns.

  4. Xhaka and Iwobi aren’t good enough to be regular starters. I think we expect a lot from Xhaka because of his price tag but he plays well below that.
    Alexis’ head is in Manchester

If we want to continue 3 at the back next season we need another Top CB. Monreal is not a specialized CB.

Honestly, even though we won, we were still poor. I don’t see us avenging our 4-0 loss to Liverpool unless Ozil, Alexis and Lacazette all play and all hLperform well and we don’t play Xhaka. Xhaka has been consistent. Consistently bad.

  5. Like I’ve said many times before.. Iwobi is crap! Maitland Niles is looking good (sorry I doubted you!) That was a beautiful goal Ozil!!

    1. he wasnt always crap though sue,
perhaps not getting a consistent run in the team is affecting him?

      whats hector or xhakas excuse?

      1. When he does get picked to play he performs like that!! No wonder he’s not in the team week in week out! There are certain players that are picked to play every game, even if they’re crap! Xhaka springs to mind!!

    1. brave call bro.
considering he was in bundesliga team of the year an schalkes best player in current role

      1. No risk, now reward. A player with such physical attributes is wasted on the wings anyways and we know he can defend better than Xhaka, what’s there to lose?

  6. Only three players stood out yesterday. Ozil – fabulous anticipation of the clearance header -which he read brilliantly to make the wonderful volley goal he scored. AM-N who looks the next big star to come through the club and first to REALLY make the grade since Wilshere. A M-N must now start regularly. And, as is I now becoming a regular occurence, Wilshere once again. I do not diss Reiss Nelson, who also looks to have a great future, but who is not yet in the Prem starting elevens. Apart from those three, all were mundane or below par. Sanchez is clearly only there in body, since his heart disappeared months ago and as for Xhaka, I only wish his body will soon depart our club. A total waste of £35million!

  7. spot on, somehow only one 8 rating and we take 3 pts, so tired of alexis, go to city mid yr, get your trophy sitting on the bench, that will be well earned…. if yu gve up sero goals, someone played well…

  8. A lot of other players are going backwards along with Alexis who should not be starting.
Now Lacazette looks frustrated and forcing his chances as he knows he gets subbed 70 minutes in. Wenger’s head games will make any player loose confidence. Next is Kalasinac. Not playing either. Yet Xhaka starts. Strange regime. No consequences when you stink the ground and you sit
even if you play well. No-one can really excel under these conditions.
We have the claim the insanity defense here as this manager has dementia.
