The Olympic ladies’s football bronze medal match between Spain and Germany on Friday 9th August featured two Arsenal Women playing for Spain. Spain fell 4-2 to Brazil, while Germany lost 1-0 to the United States in the semi-finals, setting up this Bronze medal play-off match.
Arsenal’s Laia Codina and Mariona Caldentey played in the match. Caldentey was instrumental in Spain Women’s Olympic campaign, starting all but one of the World Championship games in Paris. Codina has appeared in their last three games, but she was on the bench in the first two.
Spain had not won any of their last five games against Germany. Germany had beaten Spain three times, with the other two fixtures ending in a draw. According to the H2H, one could be concerned about Spain’s chances in this fixture. But, unfazed by any misgivings about their chances against Germany, Gunner Laia Codina revealed that with the disappointments from their match against Brazil on Tuesday and their solidarity, they will be driven to battle and win a bronze medal on Friday, which unfortunately was not to be, when Berger saved a Spanish late penalty opportunity.
Codina revealed through an Instagram post before the match: “We are going to fight for the bronze medal, even though yesterday’s game hurts us a lot. With this team and with these players, always. Thank you for the support!”
Despite Spain becoming the Women’s World Champion 2023, in Australia & New Zealand- leaving England’s Lionesses with Silver, and Spain winning the inaugural Women’s Nations League last season, they just didn’t have what was necessary to beat Arsenal’s Emily Fox’s USWNT, under the new management of Emma Hayes.
Commiserations to our Spanish Gunners..
