There is growing optimism that Arsenal could soon complete the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, with multiple reports suggesting the Gunners are closing in on a deal for the Newcastle United captain although according to Skysports the Gunners latest bid has been rejected.
Should the Brazilian arrive at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta would have another proven Premier League performer at his disposal and arguably one of the strongest midfield units in Europe.
Guimaraes’ arrival would give Arsenal a midfield packed with quality, physicality and technical ability heading into the new campaign.
Guimaraes could complete Arsenal’s strongest midfield
Martin Zubimendi impressed for much of last season after arriving in North London, although there was a feeling his performances dipped during the closing stages following a demanding campaign.
Declan Rice, meanwhile, once again demonstrated his importance to Arteta’s side, but he too shouldered a huge workload throughout the season.
With Christian Norgaard now expected to leave for Everton, another addition in the middle of the park would make perfect sense, and Guimaraes appears to fit the profile Arsenal have been targeting throughout the summer.
On paper, a midfield trio of Zubimendi sitting behind Rice and Guimaraes would offer an outstanding blend of control, energy and ball-winning ability.
The only question some supporters may ask is whether that trio provides enough creativity centrally. However, if Arsenal are also able to strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes, much of that creative burden could come from the wide areas instead.
Plenty of depth would still remain
Even if Guimaraes joins, Arsenal would still have a number of different midfield options depending on the opposition and tactical approach.
Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze would continue to provide creativity further forward, while Mikel Merino has already shown he can influence matches from midfield or even further up the pitch when required.
Myles Lewis-Skelly also looks increasingly comfortable returning to his natural midfield role after spending much of his breakthrough campaign at left-back. His versatility could prove invaluable over another demanding season.
Of course, everything still depends on Arsenal completing a deal for Guimaraes, but there is little doubt his arrival would significantly strengthen an already impressive squad.
