Arsenal’s Left-back crisis – Monreal can’t face Chelsea after just three days training? Who can?

You can’t really get more unlucky than losing three left-backs before you even play your second League game of the season, but that is what has happened to Arsenal!

Kolasinac is expected to be out for ten weeks, and Monreal got injured early in the World Cup, and when he returned we thought he was improving but another setback ruled him out of last weeks game. The Spaniard has only been in light training until today, but suddenly everyone is saying its a big boost, but would you play Monreal against Chelsea after two months off and three days training? I simply can’t see that being a sensible thing to do….

So then Maitland-Niles came in for the Chelsea game, as he was the go-to guy for Wenger when he needed a backup full-back, but Kyle Walker soon put paid to that with a big clash of knees. Niles will not be recovered for the Chelsea game either. At least Lichtsteiner was available on the bench, despite his normal position being on the right, and he actually did a very good job on his debut.

Emery was saying last week that Welbeck had played left-back in training and he may be okay as a wing-back, although I’m not sure of his defensive capabilities. But Emery is definitely running out of options..

Who would you put in there?

  1. better we just stick with Lichtsteiner, he did well last time and looked like a natural left back.

    1. Agree. And his stronger foot seems to be his left one

For me, this is a no brainer choice. Unless Emery wants more pace and attacking prowess, by using Welbeck there

    1. Innit, the best Arsenal can do given the injury situation; Chelsea away is not a game for experimentation.

    1. Yes Sue I agree, he looked okay there and seemed to steady the ship a bit last week, lets hope Bellerin can stop looking like a headless chicken for once and put in a performance that will convince me that he is the best right back we have.

  2. We actually lost only TWO LB/s and a midfielder in AMN who was pressed into temporary service. I dislike deliberately inaccurate headlines done to exaggerate problems. Until Monreal or Kolas(as second choice) are match fit – and Kolas will out for many weeks- we have little alternative than to keep playing the rank poor BELLERIN AT RB AND MOVE LICHT, WHO LOOKS A TOP PLAYER EVEN AT 34, TO LB. Unless your legs have gone, which Lichts have clearly not, age is not a factor , except in the mid or long term. All that matters is ability and desire, which Licht has in spades and which Bellerin doesn’t have at all.

  3. Actually we have lost TWO LB’s and a central midfielder pressed into emergency care at LB, in AMN. I dislike irritatingly and wrongly hyped headlines used to deliberately exaggerate any problem . It is NOT honest! Until Monreal is match fit again we have no alternative than to use the rank poor Bellerin at RB and move the top class and combative Licht, who is still , at 34, a top player and a good buy, at LB

    1. To be honest, can’t wait for Monreal to be fit. With Lichtstiener on the right we’ll have two experience full backs who will make our back four more solid. Bellerin to Barca, whatever they offer.

  4. Well so many supporters were baying, before the season started, ‘buy a left back, Sead Kosalinac is injured’. Has Arsenal changed. No!!! Not an iota. I dont blame Unai Emery. I do blame Kroenke, Gazidis and Mislintat. What planet are they on when every supporter could see the problem coming. Arsenal are run by a board and an owner who basically are not fit to run the club. Kroenk’s history since he bought the club is to presage the slow decline. Arsenal has become a a business item on a football Monopoly board and in real life too. All Arsenal supporters should work together to get ‘Greedy Stan Kroenke’ out before we become the ultimate in mediocrity. Gazidis and Kroenke are a disgrace to the name of Arsenal and to what football represents.

    1. So you want 3 players for each role, not kids but 1st team starters…
That’d be 33 players if done for every pos on the pitch.

I do want to point out that it is highly unlikely that Silent Stan went through Arsenals accounts and went “You have £70 million to spend”.
It is more likely that Silent Stan stayed Silent and sat back to let Gazidis do the job he is paid very well for, Gazidis was the highest paid CEO for a moment and he has done nothing to earn such a wage.

As for the so many fans was calling for a LB signing, where was these fans? I kept reading articles about how we do not need a new LB unless Monreal was sold, only if Monreal was sold would we need a new LB. Most Arsenal fans I know and most things I have read, most indicate the knowledge that we have 2 senior LBs and we can’t have a 3rd senior LB.

This was where the kids let themselves down, if one of them had pushed themselves enough… They could be stepping up right now like Nelson is pushing or Eddie, kids are given a chance if they are good enough and our youth have let us down in this sole regard as well as themselves.

      1. Actually Midkemma what you are saying is not backed up at all. You are not examining the real situation that cropped up. They knew Kolacinac was injured and should have done something about it.

  5. lichtsteiner is a no brainer. walker was playing well against Niles and was bullying the kid physically but once lich came on he went silent as lich is a tough sob with a mean attitude who cannot be manhandled by fancy flashy little shit like walkers and most of the fullback in epl today.
