Calum Chambers being groomed for central spot

The Arsenal defender Calum Chambers arrived from Southampton as a right-back, but Arsene Wenger thinks he is more suited to being used in central defence. This certainly makes more sense considering that we already have Hector Bellerin and Matthieu Debuchy at right-back and the we will have Carl Jenkinson returning to the squad next summer.

Chambers already has Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel in front on him so he is not getting much game time while he’s learning, but he’s happy being taught by his more experienced seniors. He told the Mail: “I feel I have learned so much over the last two years and I am happy.”

“I don’t think it happened too quickly. It just happened very quickly. It was a whirlwind start but I took it game by game and I enjoyed it. At the moment, I have changed position to centre back. I’m not getting so much game time but I am still working in training and trying to fight for my place.

“I’m not down or anything. When you are not in the team, you have to prepare for games as if you are in. You have to do everything the same. In training, Per always gives me advice. Laurent is the same. I feel I can go up to them and ask them anything and learn from them. I watch them in games all the time, learning and it is helping me get better and better.”

In his early days at Arsenal, he was played on the right, and although he looked very assured, I didn’t think he had the speed to be a true wing-back so I reckon Wenger has got this right to have him trained up as our fourth centre-back. Per and Laurent are both getting on so he may not have to wait so long before he becomes a regular starter for the first team….

    1. I wouldn’t loan as an injury could occur any game. Then we are down to 3. A red card on a careless tackle and then down to 2. He is young and learning everyday. Rotation when we are up 3-0 is possible as is an odd game or two start.

  1. For me he should go West Ham for a season and we have Carl back. He can play CB very well and AW should think on this but I get this feeling his face don’t fit with AW

  2. Flamini really likes arsenal, the guy is almost a billionaire and stayed over the summer because he believes in arsenal and wasn’t just collecting wages by sitting on the bench

  3. I still believe that Arsenal have slowed down the progress of Chambers.
If he would have stayed at Southampton, he would have been a regular in the senior England squad by now.

When you look back to how Chambers was a regularly starter for Southampton and in the beginning of his Arsenal career, his progress has declined alot.

    1. Agreed. The way he is just now is a back up, Wenger will buy a quality one as in today’s games can’t wait years to come good you either have it or you don’t same for Oxy,Campbell. Wenger will buy and they will be back up or will want to be sold off to get the game time. To many players really not up to the job, the bench is to big with ordinary quality that’s why Wenger leaves the Subs till last minute, when he goes you will see a different approach and could be better or worse.
I believe he will not retire has given himself a target to win the Champs lge in the next 2 yrs as it’s the only thing missing from his resume. CB
