Can an Emirates Cup win be the catalyst for fast Arsenal start in the Premier League?

Arsenal have had a gruelling pre-season this summer to get into top gear for the start of the new Premiership season. We have had two games against top Australian opposition to break us in softly, then we have had two very difficult matches in the blistering heat of China against Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Now we face two Champions League contenders in Benfica and Sevilla this weekend, ahead of our rematch with Chelsea in the Community Shield next weekend.

We should be fit and ready for the start of the season, which is something we’ve lacked in previous years, and Theo Walcott reckons a win in the Emirates Cup can get us in the right frame of mind for the season opener. “It’s time to get in the right frame of mind, play against strong teams on a nice pitch, and just do the right things, the things that get you into the team,” Theo said on Arsenal.com. “You want to win as well, to get into the winning habit. We tend to have quite a good record at that.

“We’ve lost the opening game of the season over the past few years I think, so we need to make sure that pattern changes this year. We’re playing against strong teams in all the games we’re playing in pre-season, so there’s no excuse for a slow start.

“This team’s had ups and downs but we need to start well first. Starting well is the main priority and then we’ve got to push on from there.

“The manager has said that right from the first day here: make sure there’s a fast start. That’s why it’s important for us to play these bigger teams in pre-season, to be mentally ready and switched on. We need to get into good habits, that’s the main thing. It’s all about a positive start, and results will make that happen.”

The fact is that we can’t play our first XI in both matches so the 6 points is far from guaranteed, but we have a big enough squad to get good results on both days. Maybe we could play our Premier League XI in one match and our Europa League side in the other!

But Theo is right, we do need to get back into the winning habit after the loss to Chelsea, so let’s cheer on the team on both days, whoever is playing…

  1. No it’s another friendly, like the Chelsea game you cannot say oh it’s a friendly when we lose but it’s a catalyst if we do well

We will need a really good start to the prem or wenger will hear protests far worse than last season. At the moment I cannot see a huge difference in his planning and process

    1. And as longboard as our 4 man midfield looks like this:
      Monreal xhaka Ramsey Bellerin
      Instead of:
      Lemar carvalho seri Bellerin
We will struggle in the emirates cup let alone prem league football

    2. Same vice versa, which actually happens more often/louder than when it’s your scenario. We win and ..oh it’s nothing, means absolutely nothing. We lose and it’s a sign of Arsenal being s**t, with a crisis round the corner.

It either means nothing or it means something, pick one and stick to it people. For me I couldn’t be arsed so long as it’s not a hiding. I’d like to win but I wouldn’t want to risk injury for it, and if we get the win it will mean nothing for our season.

    3. arsenal has won convincingly last FA cup even with all bench defenders ,and what i have learnt from that is how much working hard on training ,especially for stamina and endurance so as to press on the opponents not to give them time and a space ,dominate on the ball and win the match with a big team if arsenal continue to display that with the addition of more skillful midfielders ,left winger right winger wow arsenal will be monster

  2. Theo likes talking too much, he will never be world class and England is quickly forgeting him.he may be a nobody in football world by the time he retires, focus on improving and shut up

    1. He has a point, about the talking. When I read that I was thinking well we’ll see whether he actually listens to himself. Last season it was all, I have arrived!! I’m gonna keep doing the right things. I can’t remember exactly what he said but I remember it sounded like he achieved something. And that was all because for a run of games he got tight and made tackles. So we’ll see.

If they bring that FA cup mentality to the start of the season, we’d do fine.

  3. Alls I hope from this “event/spectacle” is for lacazette to become used to a capacity at emirates and to put the ball into the onion basket and be egged on massively by the arsenal fans. I hope for him that it becomes infectious so as he prides himself on being more n more used to banging in goals for his club and that emirates cup is the start of a career throughout which he endears himself to the world and arsenal fans.

  4. Arsenal is a wealthy club force Sanchez to play for under 23s and let him leave for free next season, his stats were better at arsenal because Wenger built the team around him now he feels bigger than the club, the team he wants to move to never wanted him before he came here,we need to bully him for his ego,he is 29 arsenal will be there till end of time, just get lemar and goretzka
    cogy!

  5. Tell me how we fared that season we won Emirates Cup. It’ s like winning a pillow fight then imaging you are ready for a heavyweight boxing champioship

  6. LOL just lol

I’m a bit embarrassed about the “Emirates Cup”. Not the event but the fact that the winner wins an actual Cup

People talk about the FA Cup being a Mikey Mouse cup (which I completely disagree with-The FA Cup is a big competition in my opinion). But this should just be called something like The Emirates Invitational or Emirates Summer Invitational or something like that.

The only thing that would be more embarrassing would be to have a Open Top Bus Parade.

I do hope that if we “win” it. It’s not the only silverware we win.

Monaco rejected our £50 million bid for Lemar apparently. Not very encouraging at the moment 🙁

  7. Can an Emirates Cup win be the catalyst for fast Arsenal start in the Premier League?

Not to be pessimistic, but when Las was it?

  8. Hello!!!!? WHERE ARE ALL THESE HUGE OFFERS FOR Sanchez?? WHERE?
Maybe if Arsenal received some tempting larger offers it would take care of itself. As it stands now, no offers made to report on. Honestly, you’re telling me if “big name players” from other clubs were holding off to run down their contract, clubs wouldn’t be pumping-up large bids, now? I promise, if Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, etc., even the Mbappe kid, if these players were running down their last year contract, clubs would be in a bidding war! Where are all the very interested clubs with large bids to make the choice easy and get them such a great player? I don’t buy the “he could go for a free BS” argument anymore. If this player is so special, and everyone wants him, then where are all the interested bidders?

Either several big name clubs want him and are willing to pay just like for any other “top player”, or the player is a bit iffy to other clubs due to his behaviors, etc. and clubs are hesitant to spend and/or bring him in. Again, if the player is really top draw and valued by other clubs, the last year contract BS would be moot to an extent.

  9. Why cant we buy Mahrez and Lemar, or seri and Mahrez, mahrez can beat players with ease which is what we need

  10. Won’t be too fussed about results, obviously winning would be nice. Most importantly, I would like Arsenal to be well organised off the ball- something we were awful at against Chelsea and pretty poor at in general. These weaknesses cannot continue to persist.

  11. arsenal has won convincingly last FA cup even with all bench defenders ,and what i have learnt from that is how much working hard on training ,especially for stamina and endurance so as to press on the opponents not to give them time and a space ,dominate on the ball and win the match with a big team ,that is what arsenal has to continue to display.
