Can Welbeck really break into best Arsenal front three?

Now that Arsene Wenger can once again select the France international striker Alexandre Lacazette for his Arsenal teams, after the former Lyon forward was left on the sidelines for a while due to a knee problem, Arsenal fans should get to see what the boss thinks is his best attacking line-up.

And at the moment, perhaps unsurprisingly, the three players that seem to be the first choice for Arsenal in attack are the club’s three most expensive transfers of all time. With Mesut Ozil and Aubameyang on either side of Lacazette, the Gunners have more than £150 million of attacking talent on the pitch, but our England international Danny Welbeck has plans to break into this triumvirate.

After his match winning display against Southampton on Sunday, where most pundits also gave Wellbz their Man of the Match award to boot, this does not sound as unlikely as it would have a week or two ago, but is it really realistic? As reported by Sky Sports, Danny has declared his belief that he can operate with the French and Gabonese forwards and he seems to think that competition for places will actually help him to shine for Arsenal.

He said, “As you’ve seen, I can play with Pierre and with Laca.

“It is nice. It gives you that added motivation. The competition is there so you are going to improve and better yourself.

“I’ve had that throughout my whole career. Being at an academy where players come from all over the world and it is the same here, you are always going to have that competition. It is healthy.

“I know I can link up with plenty of the players in this team.”

Welbeck also has the added motivation of needing to prove himself worthy of a place on the plane to the Russia World Cup with the three lions this summer, so can he break into the best Arsenal front three?

  1. No! This isn’t a serious article. ‘Bambi on ice’ will only start if there are injuries or suspensions.

    1. How could you keep mocking our hero as “Bambi on ice”? Without him, Arsenal could not get their last FA Cup and the Community Shield

Welbeck is often underestimated, but he is a big game player. Proven by his contributions when playing against big teams (such as Manchester United and Chelsea), whereas silky and expensive players like Ozil disappeared

  2. Yes he can if he works on his first touch in and around the 18 yards box plus his finishing. Injuries has not helped him in Arsenal but training with Laca and Auba can improve him.

    1. I notice many Gunners and ex-Gunners have atrocious first touches, such as Ozil, Welbeck, Giroud, Walcott, Jenkinson, etc. Wilshere has also been doing it lately

There must be something wrong with Arsenal’s training system, because it is totally opposite Guardiola’s team. Guardiola’s Manchester City are brilliant in passing and ball control departments, therefore Arsenal’s next manager should be a leader that has similar philosophy

If Welbeck’s first touches do not improve soon, he could still be a good winger or wingback, due to his athleticism

      1. I’d say giroud’s first touch was actually exceptional hence all the fancy flicks that he’d pull off. it was everything else that was bad bar his aerial prowess which was also exceptional

  3. No. He isn’t good enough. His finishing is poor to average
He hasn’t improved much in the 4 years he’s been here. He is far behind Aubameyang and Lacazette

    I like Welbeck though.
    Very hard working and fast.
He does score. 26 goals in 76 matches isn’t terrible. He helped us win 3 FA Cups

    1. Yes they’ll all be queuing up for the now brilliant Welbeck. Don’t know how Messi, Suarez, Ronaldo etc will ever get a game if he joins one of these teams:)

  4. i seem to recall Lord bendtner scoring hattricks at arsenal doesn’t mean he wasn’t bang average for us. I like danny’s athleticism and defs think he’s a decent squad player in the mould of elneny but danny welbeck should be nowhere near our starting line up. I was in tears from laughter watching him play against stoke and he missed an absolute sitter against southhampton which on another day wouldve cost us the win but to his credit his positioning for the header was exceptional but his first touch and finishing is gervinho-esque

  5. OT: Do Arsenal fans believe we will win the Europa League i.e. beat leipzig/atletico madrid? I dont think we can beat athletico in a two-legged tie (hope I’m wrong). I think a 2-legged tie against Leipzig would be an interesting match up though. Ideally our best bet would be drawing lazio/redbull or marseille/leipzig in the next round and hope we turn up in the final vs atletico or an evenn bigger fairytale is someone else knocking them out before the final (just like dortmund). of course i think if we do beat athletico in the semis than we would go on a run that should see us through our usual end of season renaissance. Thoughts fellow gooners?

    1. You are right, we have seen this movie several times, through the three times FA Cup glory under our Supreme Leader Wenger

But a major European trophy after a two-decade drought could make Arsenal as popular as Manchester United and Liverpool, among the young football fans and the players/ managers

    2. Hi Malch95,

Obviously, I hope we get to the final. If we do, it is likely Atletico will be our opponents. However, Atletico are an exceptional team (second behind Barca and drew recently away to Madrid 1-1) and very well drilled. I believe Atletico are similar to Arsenal in terms of attack, but defensively Arsenal will be torn apart by Atletico (if we make it to the final). Having said that, Arsenal can pull off miracles (e.g. man city and chelsea in last years FA cup).

I think we’ll make it to the final, but will be drubbed by Atletico. Mustafi is a very average defender and makes too many mistakes. Also, Koscielny looks to be at the end of his career.

  6. If Welbeck breaks into our starting 11 we are in trouble.

I believe, positioning, defending, timing runs etc you can teach to various extends but finishing/scoring top strikers are born with. Welbeck was not.

  7. After 2 super finishes, YES he can break not only Arsenal’s attack, even Barcelona and send Suárez to the bench. Welbeck’s price is now same as Ronaldo’s.

Really people? One shot that was deflected to the net (without deflection that was keeper’s ball), another good goal due to his placement, but that doesn’t erase all the errors he keeps doing week in week out. He is good, but this praise is going over the top. Soon he’ll start playing the same way he plays and most people will rightfully say he doesn’t belong here, he should be sold to the championship teams

I hope he does better though, his good form is a positive outcome for all of us

  8. I just hope he does!!
Im pretty sure he will made it to the starting line up and become regular scorer….but not at Arsenal.

  9. Yeah Jan-He’s got WestHam or Everton wrote all over him.Thats his level If he wants to play every week

  10. Players like Welbeck are one the key factors as to why we’re now battling with the likes of Burnley for 6th. It’s disgraceful that almost his entire career has been spent at Man Utd, and Arsenal. For me, he looked at home when he was on loan at Sunderland. His level is mid-table at best!

  11. Danny W. ALL DETERMINATION , LIKEABILITY, GUTS AND SADLY, VERY MEDIOCRE TALENT. At least at our required level.

  12. First time on the site but I read the comments and think you guys are missing the point. If we start Auba/laca/welbz with Ozil as ten and Miki/Xhaka midfield welbeck could not help but improve saying that we still need better quality
