Chelsea v Arsenal Review – Alonso breaks Arsenal’s hearts with late winner

Well what can you say about this game, definitely a lot more exciting than the Man City game! It started quite similarly to our pre-season friendly with Chelsea going for all out attack and their pressure paid off in just 9 minutes as just after Arsenal got their first chance when Ozil shot past the post, Pedro was straight down the other end and got his shot perfectly in Cech’s bottom corner.

Everyone was complaining about Iwobi being in the starting line-up but he is playing with confidence and aplomb and trying to run past Chelsea players but it finally goes out for an Arsenal throw. It results in a great chance for Aubameyang who inexplicably shoots it miles over the bar! Yet again the Blues get it straight down the other end, and Morata shows Auba how to finish and suddenly Arsenal were 2-0 behind and looking like getting a drubbing.

The possession is all Chelsea’s but Arsenal look like they have finally woken up (or Chelsea start siting back) and within 10 minutes Mkhitaryan gets a great chance but shoots well over the bar. Pedro had another great chance 5 minutes later but but an excellent save from Cech denied him and it was Arsenal’s turn to fly down the other end. Mkhitaryan got another chance and made no mistake this time and got a standing ovation for an excellent finish. Arsenal were baack in the game! 2-1.

Both teams were really going for it and it carried on end-to-end until suddenly Mkhitaryan gave the ball to Iwobi, who smashed it into the net for 2-2 with just four minutes to half-time. And Arsenal nearly even took the lead when Aubameyang got another chance in the 44th minute but fluffed it again. It’s not the Gabonese hitman’s day up til then.

After watching that first half the crowd will be looking for another treat in the second half and they are not disappointed as both teams keep going on hammer and tongs, but Chelsea are still the team with most of the possession. With 20 minutes to go Emery surprisingly takes off Ozil for Ramsey but Hazard is on and Emery puts on Giroud for Morata. With ten mins to go Kante sends a bullet header just over the bar but a minute later Hazard makes his mark by slipping a ball to Alonso who has no trouble slipping it past Cech and Chelsea are back in front.. The last ten minutes are all Chelsea looking for another one but in the last minute Ramsey gets a great chance but alas it was not to be, and Giroud had a great chance to make it four….

At least we tried…

  1. Arsenal would have won if Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan did not miss the sitters. As I predicted, that no 10 slot is useless and it would have been better if Arsenal allocated the space to have an extra CM instead of a no 10:

    – Aubameyang: Missed two easy chances, very awful for a striker in his calibre. Starting Lacazette ahead of him would force him to work better

    – Ozil: Pressed harder after Emery’s words on the media, but did nothing special as a no 10/ playmaker. Did not create any sharp through balls that were expected from a world class no 10 like him

    – Mkhitaryan: Worked well with Bellerin in attacking, but bad in defending. Pedro’s goal happened because he could not mark Alonso properly and missed one sitter, then redeemed himself

    – Iwobi: Did not offer penetration from the left wing, but he was excellent in protecting the ball, duels and giving the assist. He would have two assists if his teammate could finish it

    – Guendouzi: Showed double-lung stamina and high pressing as usual. Showed great vision by creating those sharp through balls

    – Xhaka: Did nothing special and lack of mobility as usual

    – Bellerin: Excellent when attacking and had good understanding with Mkhitaryan

    – The other defenders and the GK: Did well despite the scoreline

      1. Neither was his attack good enough. Was just his usual self.
It was a much better game than ManCity, and some of the sharplessness will soon disappear I think. However, the role of a playmaker, who can retain the ball, OR move it wherever he wants is still lacking.
If the coach can get to top four within this and next season, it would be an achievement. Anything more is icing on the cake. Because, in Spain, is objective was easy, you cannot win the league, not copa de ray, so win anything else. He has not advanced in real european league even with PSG with all those players and experience.

      2. If I could pick one player before that game to not play yesterday, it was Bellerin. Lichsteiner’s positioning is so far ahead of all the other defenders. An away game like that I would’ve liked Litch playing the role he knows to a tee. Bellerin’s been poor in preseason and it carried into the league, when he’s supposed to get in someones face he stands off and when a man is in an area that causes no immediate threat Bellerin gets sucked out of position.

    1. spot on it’s got take time gotanidea, very happy with how we tried to get back into the game and how vocal our manager was…. when you lose you get your ass up and do something that is refreshing!!

but when hazard came in we has no more stamina to continue pressing and got outdone by skill and a lasps in concentration. two losses but it will take time to rebuild, we deserved at least a draw from that game.

cech shot stpping was great but he needs to get used to playing with his feet at least a faster pace, the defenders did alright as well but guendouzi should not be dropped that kid had two babtism of fire and came out swinging, torreira is a must in the line up and i guess granit and ozil will be losing their spot based on the system we look much better without them and i agree we don’t need a CAM an extra mid will help with the press and when we lose it we will have more bodies back defending

don’t know if it’s because it’s the start of the season but our stamina needs improving sokratis and bellerin looked dead by min 75 a bunch of others also slowed down.

i’m sure all the fans that leech on positivity will come out from their holes based on the two losses but this system will give us a team that we are proud of win or lose, we fight untill the end! and we did for like an hour 🙂

so support and give us something more hopeful than the same hate you drop on our players week in week out. COYG

      1. +1 #Sal, let’s see how we perform in the next games and if Emery is willing to take some hard decisions by benching Ozil and Aubameyang for underperforming.

        1. ozil fair enough GR but i think you might be a bit harsh on auba no? if we had to drop all our underperforming players we might be just left with 5-6 starters? play him with laca and don’t worry about a Ting,

because Pierre Aubamayang is gonna score some goals 🙂

          1. He just needs that first one before it starts playing tricks with his head.

We had rotten luck getting these two opening games, new players new manager new backroom team, we could’ve done with a handy month before facing these type of fixtures. Chelsea got a fair number of home team calls from the ref too, we didn’t get any when we were at home. Hopefully these’ll be the only two losses we suffer before christmas.

    2. Are you Bellerins Mum? Your ludicrous comment about him can only be said by someone who is wilfully blind to the FACT he is useless!

      1. no bellerin comment but hey here you are i said i left it you’ll just get an i told you so, so why are you poking the bear?

bellerin’s mom joke really drum roll…..drum dum dum wah wah !! the Banter is awful mate sorry not interested anymore your just hurt that your minimal football knowledge has been called into question so here you are with zero informative comments and a 2 cent banter attempt. i figured you out buddy 🙂

it’s ok you need the hate to survive jon you get a pass, I hope everything is ok?…i just pray when i get to your age i’ll be happy enough in my life that i won’t need to release my anger and inner hate on the team. best of luck buddy

        1. You can relax Sal . . . I don’t think Jon was having a go at you but responding to gotnoidea’s ridiculous comment:

‘Bellerin: Excellent when attacking and had good understanding with Mkhitaryan’.

This is the sort of idiotic remark he makes regularly, having completely missed the fact that Bellerin is first and foremost supposed to be a defender and was absolutely useless in that aspect of his game – as freakin’ usual!

          1. it was literally after my comment, so relaxed and cool as a cucumber gunner but you got to give respect to get respect, and he has been given the respect due to his age and took full advantage….hating on every page, one line jab to anyone who disagrees with him, jab its ok but give me at least something i don’t know go to google and drop a stat if you are that lazy that’s the worst part of it all you learn nothing!! you get zero positivity!! the guy has just his opinion to back it and it’s hate every article…it’s getting old 😉

so change the CD uncalled if it wasn’t meant for me so i’m sorry jon , but he had it coming Mr defense attorney! i rest my case gunner 🙂

    3. Bellerin is horrendous. And he has no business in this side if we all know for a fact he will be done by Hazard every single time. It was suicide starting him. Lichtsteiner is a better player!

    4. Bar Xhaka, Bellerin was the worst Arsenal player on the pitch tonight.
Which game did you watch ?????

    5. Umeryball begin to roll & today it took the shape of an open back Van.
i think the defenders should be fed with tablets to cause diarrhea each day so that they knew exactly how it is like to live with an open back..! Suggest another way if you think there is one.
i was a gooner still i am was a gooner.

    6. oh quiet, iwobi played part in the first goal it was his shot that caused it and he scored the other goal, he was our only threat today as auba was looking like a headless chicken

    7. Socratis and Mustafi did well?….the CBs were awful. I have yet to see Unai’s much talked about pressing and high energy type of football

      1. From what I remember it was midfield dominance more so than pressing high up. He often had his wingbacks or fullbacks pushed up to meet the midfielders, it looked overloaded but it used to work. They’d hound players off the ball or into making errors but it seemed to mostly happen near the midfield circle. Pressing but not full on pressing throughout the pitch.

    8. Guendouzi though balls are amazing, his vision and passing range its top notch for a 19 year old. He is a real talent.

Xhaka is none of the above except he can pass only with his left leg, mostly sideways anyway. He should play with the under 23’s. Poor player……even Arteta or Song, Diaby looks better than him. He cant justify his price, should go to Turkey or Germany.

      1. I can’t wait til we get to see Torriera and Guendouzi together, Torriera supposedly used to play the no10 role or CAM so is said to be decent at using the ball too.

  2. I want Bellerin sold on January 1st.
He couldn’t defend as long as he’s got a hole up his arse.

    1. It was not his fault

      He created a great assist

Sell Ozil and Xhaka instead, they created nothing so far

      1. Are you watching Arsenal just in other half of the pitch?
Bellerin did not defend at all! He was nowhere in our half – crazy!

          1. I hope so. I was honestly hoping that Bellerin will change his mind after missing World Cup and after Wengers sacking but no.

    2. Til Jan 1st, when he MUST be sold, he must NEVER wear our shirt ever again. I reckon we have cloned another Santos, the disastrous “defender” who was our worst ever defender under WeNGER. Bellerin is now as useless as Santos. He and Xhakla must both be sold in Jan and both never play for us again.

      1. Now we know why Barca didn’t buy him!!! What have they been doing all summer? Wasn’t it obvious we had a crappy defence? If anything it’s worse than last season – a total lack of pace and understanding in central defence and midfield. This could get a lot worse before it gets better and January is nearly 5 months away. Not good!!

      1. Thanks mate, you completely understand football. We need to get rid of these three players; they are not ready to play for Arsenal. Or, they simply do not have the ability to do so.

      2. You wenger boys forgot that when ramsey is in the team we are in big minus as well, not that just he is almost no use at all but he is often in a way of our attackers…. last game he has contact with the ball 3 (three) fraking times in 20 min!
First he did well, securing a ball and passing it backwards (of course),
secondly from the right side he had a great opportunity to asist with Laza and Auba in the center but he (greatest wenger striker) did shoot (weak and in the keeper)
third, he had a shot over the goal, centraly…
that was your untouchable ramsey in the yesterdays game.

        1. Maks what us Wenger boys don’t want you to forget is the FACT that we finished sixth last season with Ramsey part of it.
Forgotten the cup final goals! Of course you have as that doesn’t fit your argument.
Me? I’d sell him tomorrow, not because of a blinkered opinion, but because he is holding our club to ransome.
No player is bigger than the club.
By the way, how did abu and lacs do in the shooting department yesterday?

  3. I have to say I fn hate playing from the back. Its absolutely retarded. When you have midfield of Kante and Jorginho, you dont playfrom back.

    Starting Xhaka, MISTAKE.
    Starting Özil, MISTAKE.
    Not starting Lacazette, MISTAKE.
    Not starting Torreira, MISTAKE.
    Subbing Iwobi off, MISTAKE.

Starting Mustafi and Sokratis, who both are slow, is a calamitious mistake as well against Chelsea.

This whole match is on Emery, no way around it.

2 matches on, not once we have looked like winning. I dont think Emery can save us.

    1. Imagine if the space for the no 10 is allocated for an extra CM instead

Maybe Arsenal could control the midfield instead of keep losing possession

    2. iwobi was done running he had a good game but no way was he gonna keep up with hazard at first then dave….the sub was a must we need to be fitter to play this way, some players lacked the stamina iwobi was definetly one of them. he did a great job i think so happy for him.

      1. Except Iwobi played LW while Hazard plays LW. So it shouldve been Mkhi subbed as he cant defend at all and heI was against Hazard.

        Iwobi did really well.

    3. Agreed damn that ozil xhaka belerin Socrates Ramsey and damn that deluded Emery for snubbing off iwobi (where are his haters?), Tiki taka around the penalty , Wenger style back passes
Walk Emery walk, your a deluded one masquerading as our coach just another yes man.

    4. With all the analytics Emery uses he refuses to use them himself …we were disjointed and we conceded 2 early goal We we made it up to half time 2:2 back on with the disjointed affair for the second half loosing it.
Yes there were some good moments but are these moments a true improvement ?
The reason behind the pressing game its to get more chances to score so we need fast striker Auba but I reckon to do so perfectly you need a minimum of 4 midfielders or 5 2 of which are wingers which leaves us with with 442 instead 451 we haven’t got the wingers and since ozil cant be bothered with the defense so he goes behind the striker .
I am afraid its a mess its going to take a while before we clear the lockers but I am an Arsenal supporter and I am hoping we win our next game

  4. Bellerin and Xhaka need to stay away from our starting line-up. It just amazes every single time how terrible they are. They cant defend, cant dribble, cant intercept, cant cross, and cant even make a pin-point pass. What on earth are they there for?!

Lichsteiner and Torreira need to start next game. Emery please wake up.

    1. I agree, we should get rid of players who can not forget Wenger, or at least bench them for long time.

  5. Lacazette just killed us with that brainless back pass to Torreria, then allowing Hazard to just skip pass him. These are player mistakes not the coach. Shame after all those chances we skied.

    1. Some of these can’t tell the difference, they don’t bother even looking. Like when a manager makes certain decisions, he’ll have a reason for making them. Xhaka with Guendzi, both can pass it forward, both have height, and we were facing a team that’s good on set pieces. Before the game he’d have reasons. Torriera went far into the world cup, he got here in the week leading up to the season. Emery will have reasons other than these ones, he sees them in training. A hypothetical system will always beat a real one if hindsight is involved. Another reason could be, imagine all the new players started, now imagine we lost, but got thrashed. How would the feeling be then, how would Torriera and the new guys feel, likely all guilty and shot of any confidence. Its never a good idea to make too many changes to the team at once, and we had the worst type of fix’s we could get. Emery has reasons, he has more than I can see, and certainly more than some people in here bother to try and think about. They never look for possible reasons, you’re talking to a tree. To them its black and white, this player is this and that player is that, and now the manager is thus. …Yet, the player was a fav of everyone who gave the last mistake away. These never look beyond their own nose mate.

  6. Bellerin was dog sh1t!!
Last time we lost first two games was 1992 and we finished tenth.
We came back well from 2-0 down but then let them dominate for all the second half. If only we had some decent strikers…….

    1. Aubameyang was a world class striker and both Lacazette/ Aubameyang cost more than 100 M

I bet Lacazette would start in the next game, to pump Aubameyang up

        1. Laca didnt lose is the match!! We had already conceded TWICE and kept playing the idiotic play from the back when it clearly didnt work, AT ALL.

  7. Thanks Laca for that stupid back up when he would have easily gone forward. Some of our players don’t think and if Unai continues insisting playing from the back with 3 minutes to go he won’t last long here. Simple basics costing us.

  8. Total rubbish again, defence is almost comical.. 5 goals conceded, 2 games in and 2 defeats! Xhaka, Ozil painfully bad! Nothing has changed this Arsenal team are too wengerfied! Totally disheartened!

      1. Of course Sue.. this arsenal team are weak! Enjoy the game, I know I won’t that team is destroying me. ?

        1. I don’t really feel like going to watch that pile of ?… I had high hopes this season & they’ve all been crushed!!

          1. Same here. Hopes fading away. Even Wenger could have delivered 2 defeats versus City and Chelsea. I suppose positives are we didn’t concede 6 goals each game?

              1. This Arsenal team would not have got back to 2-2 under Arsene Wenger.
It looks like Aubameyang and Mhikataryan have caught the Welbeck disease; can’t hit the barn let alone the door.

                1. True Ozziegunner ? I’ve said for so long we aren’t ruthless enough, those forward players need to work on finishing or go elsewhere.. can’t expect to get 4 or 5 clear chances before finally converting this isn’t 5 a side!

            1. I think we’re now officially a small team or that the big boys no longer see us as threat. Imagine, city had KDB on the bench and Chelsea wouldn’t risk starting hazard against us. The goals could easily have been more if those teams do not or seem to hold back. I fear facing Liverpool honestly

          2. I don’t blame you! Right now I wouldn’t watch Arsenal if they were playing in my garden! 70 mil transfer budget to fix that cr*p. with Kroenke in full control it’ll be 50 next summer! The whole team should donate their wages to charity after that! enjoy the game Sue you have more patience than me ?

              1. Us gooners are mentally tough Sue, we’re customed to lame performances and embarrassing defeats.. if anything it’s a day out for your little man so hopefully they put on a show ? I want the season over already ?

                  1. Haha 2 games in and it’s a crisis already ? if we get beat next week then Emery has to go ? nah but seriously the pressure is on now but luckily our fixtures look good until November so maybe we can pack away the defibrillator ?

                    1. Haha I know I’m kidding myself, this is gonna be another very long painful season ? Bellerin, Mustafi and his clone Sokratis is a train wreck waiting to happen ?

        1. Honestly I don’t get why guys are disappointed. With our transfer activities, it’s obvious we were not planning to compete with the big boys. That’s why I kept complaining but some called guys like me pessimists who wouldn’t get behind the team

    1. So Wengerfied! We had a 0-0 in this fixture and lost 3-0 to Man City last season (In Feb when we had already given up 4th) but it’s Wengers fault or as I saw on the City game “had Wenger been in charge we’d of lost by 5+” Its all nonsense we spend no money. Eventually next year Emery will settle in and we’ll fight for 4th and the odd trophy. The delusional fans that think we should be challenging for titles will then call for Emery’s head. We are simply Valencia mrk 2 a team whose fans expect more than they can ever deliver with their spending. Only saving grace is at least Wenger will likely find employment easy next year. Funny thing is Emery starts all the “Wenger favourites” it’s almost like despite their flaws they are the best we have.

      1. They would soon jump at you. It’s fanciful to insult Wenger over here. I can assure you that if Wenger were to manage Everton this season they would finish above Arsenal.

        1. So Everton would finish in the top 4? Because that is the only scenario where Wenger’s Everton finishing above Arsenal is of any relevance to us. If Arsenal finished 17th and Wenger’s Everton 16th it would still proove the man was past it and had to go..or would you now want him back now because he finished above us? Incase you haven’t noticed, 80% of the squad Emery is working with he was left by Wenger so Wenger taking over a new squad at Everton to beat his old squad at Arsenal only further prooves the man was past it. Quite shocking you would stoop this low to defend Wenger to be honest.

        2. TW14-TH14, it’s not fanciful at all.
It’s pitiful, ridiculous and completely futile.
How on earth this helps the current situation is beyond me.
We have lost two games under Emery and already .
someone wants to start a Emery Out Campaign!
If someone wants to believe that our ex manager has been the cause of previous problems then so be it.
But to read every mistake made since he left is still his responsibility is laughable.
Emery has seen fit to give some of these “weedy, gutless, clueless Wenger golden boys” new contracts and plays them and the rest of of his “spineless, overpaid unfit to wear the shirt dross” instead of the players signed by the man himself!
Weird to say the least, could it be a Wengerite influence from the grave?
Now I and thousands like me assume that it is Emery’s decision and nothing to do with Wenger and whether we agree with it or not, continue to support the man.
Seems that some on here cannot grasp this simple fact and continue to live in the past, but that is of course their perogative.
So the majority on here, me included, have to wait patiently until the penny drops and, meanwhile, hope that Emery’s third ever premier league game will see him collect all three points with or without Wenger’s, oops sorry, Emery’s new signings.

          1. I should have added that despite this weedy etc dross set of players, the lowest we finished in 22years was 6th.
Now, with the influx of five new players, instead of looking for a higher finish, it’s Emery’s inherited team that somehow has slipped into a relegation fight?
Yeah, work that one out and give us all the answer!

            1. Ken1945 fair comment if you consider Wenger had only Sir Alex as top manager to go against? How did that work out for him? Titles vs sir Alex? Trophies?

How has he done against influx of new managers?

When given some context it puts things in perspective doesn’t it?

Cherry picking is not being realistic, we’ve gone over this before, and both been called out for that.

Lastly, 20 years in CL is fantastic and probably never seen again, but remind everyone how many Champions League trophies he has to show? Hell, how many semi-finals? There’s a reason Wenger was the round of 16 king.

              1. Durand, I am not defending Wenger but trying to point out that the present manager has inherited a team that finished sixth in the league. FACT.
Miles behind City and rubbish away from home. FACT.
Five new players signed that (one assumes) should improve the squad. FACT.
These players not being chosen ahead of the so called weedy dross that finished sixth. FACT.
Leaving players on the bench who have shown their value in previous games. FACT.
Choosing to play a man who is in dispute with the club and refuses to sign a new contract. FACT.

Now then Durand, some questions my old debating friend.
Do you dispute any of the above, if so why?
How has any of the above involved Wenger in regards to decision making?
Are all of the above Emery’s decisions?
Should we not give our new manager time to improve on our last manager’s history?
I am really behind Emery and will support him to the hilt. It seems others are not prepared to do that.

  9. Suddenly because iwobi scores he is brilliant? Well he isn’t. Only Ghendouzi was good and he was also the only player who looked gutted at the end of the game. We need players with a winners mentality and that is the managers biggest obstacle, because under Wenger it was hunky dory no matter what.

    1. No he’s not brilliant all of a sudden but he scored and tried hard and played well. Guendouzi was brilliant, not just good.

    2. Iwobi had a better game than so many of the primadonna’s at this club. I dont think he’s super talented but I see the effort he puts in. Some players like Ozil and Bellerin are bad AND dont try and it’s way worse to see that.

  10. I only saw the last 25 mins, but we looked awful! I wasn’t expecting much because of the lineup. How was the entire game?

It’s great that Emery again identified possible (I say “possible”, as I missed most of game, so I don’t actually know) weak links within the game, with Xhaka and Ozil subbed, although it begs the question, why did he start them? Especially after last week.

Painful, but realistic start. I thought we might lose our first two games.

  11. We had 2 100% chances playing with 10 men (Xhaka was minus for us as Barkley was minus for them), and then in second half we had 11 players until ramsey went in and did nothing good (two pure shots on goal instead of assists he had to make).
Just kidding (or not) but Emery could win this game just with better personal subs.
Although Bellerin played o.k. in attack we still need to bench him for good.
Matteo was again our best player. Happy to see Monreal come back.
Reality is that we have players for Europa league, and just few extra class.
    Big job infront of Emery.

  12. Emery has done nothing , look at Sarri , preseason was enough for him to change Chelsea because he is a top coach , but Emery is an awful coach and is not the right person to take Arsenal forward. #EmeryOut

      1. Simeone , Leonardo Jardim , Thomas Tuchel (We should have sacked Wenger 2 seasons age and gotten him).

        1. Unfortunately John that did not happen. Unai Emery is a demonstrated winner and the best coach Arsenal could have got of those available at the time. Tuchel had already signed at PSG and Jardim would not leave Monaco. Tuchel has yet to win anything.
Unai Emery needs support and patience after a tough start. Guardiola and Klopp were not instant successes in the EPL with a lot more money made available to them. There are a lot more points left in the season to come.
Trying to undermine Unai Emery after 2 games by some posters on this site, is not what I expect from fellow gooners.

          1. Absolutely correct Ozziegunner and take that a step further.
Are they really blaming a squad that finished sixth last year, with five new players assumingly better than what we had, suddenly relegation material and Emery must go!
On too of that, the lame old excuse that it’s Wenger’s fault is trotted out on a regular basis.
Of course the last two years were dire and the football was rubbish away from home
.But we still finished sixth. So the question must be why are we seemingly struggling with five new signings?
BECAUSE Emery has been just weeks at the club and must be given time…. wasn’t that what everyone said when he was appointed?
Furthermore, I personally believe we are doing him a misservice by continually referring to our ex manager.
It’s his team now and he will get it right, nothing to do with Wenger.
The team he inherited finished sixth, we expect more and he will deliver. When he does, I wonder if Wenger will be mentioned and if so, in what manners?

    1. Don’t rush, because Emery inherited inconsistent players that usually only perform well against weak clubs, such as Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi, Ramsey, etc

Unless we lose five times in ten games, then he has to go

      1. In wenger era except Ramsey All those players have looked good under different managers. I have seen national games from Ozil , Mustafi , …. and they have shown what they are capable of and it’s obvious Emery can’t get the best out of them , also his defensive system is as awful as wenger’s , even if you think our back 4 is trash , emery still should be able to have a defensive system similar to teams like Watford or Southampton , but conceding 5 goals shows he isn’t capable of that.

        1. Ozil was awful and Xhaka did nothing special in the last World Cup

Mustafi was not even selected in World Cup 2018 and he was not a first team player in World Cup 2014:

          skysports.com/football/brazil-vs-germany/teams/319160

Not even listed in the Brazil vs Germany 2014 game and he was part of the relegation zone Valencia before bought by Arsenal

        2. Ozil just didn’t deserve to shoulder the entire blame of Germany being terrible. He still wasn’t very good just like the rest of his team

          1. Ozil was objectively one of the best german player at the WC. It’s a stupid argument made by stupid people.

    2. And here you are comparing Chelsea team to that of Arsenal?Really? Let’s try to be honest with ourselve,we don’t have the quality of their midfielders and attackers (maybe on par with their dreadful defense though) and Sarri brought the focal point of sarriball to Chelsea in Jorginho so you just can’t compare the quality of the two teams!! Sarri inherited a team that won the EPL two years ago,Emery inherited a team on a downslide!!

  13. The back 4 still killing us. Time Bellerin sits in favor of Lichtsteiner.
Gobsmaked Laca played that pass 15 yds back into danger in front of 18 yd box; that killed us.

Overall bit of improvement, Guendouzi looking solid, but defense definitely achilles heel. Absolutely schoolboy stuff, back 4 need shock therapy or they won’t learn shit.

Lastly, no Wenger shit from anyone please, quite stale at this point regardless of context. He’s gone move on like an adult not whine like teenage heartbreak.

    1. The decision making is also terrible. How can 19 yr old Guendouzi seem so composed and intelligent while everyone else panicks under pressure?

Emery starting Xhaka terrible mistake, Ramsey offered nothing in his cameo.

Every minute Guendouzi plays makes Ramsey irrelevant, that’s no joke. Dude is bossing it right now, and Guendouzi and Torreria should be the partnership going forward and AMN in 4-3-3 when he returns.

Torreria, Guendouzi, and AMN midfield come November, with Emile challenging for a spot. Lichtsteiner starts and Bellerin on the bench for a couple weeks.

      1. I dnt have to say it… but I will: I agree with you 100% plus I would ad that we have to give leno a chance. Chech looks really out with no composure at all. It is ugly to say but I think better goalkeeper would save at least on of their goals.

        1. Maks great piint about Cech. One minute he’s blocking golfballs, and 30 seconds later beachball goes past him. Bipolar goalkeeper; goes from brilliant save to missing an easy stopper.

Leno most certainly cannot be worse. Leno deserves a chance; FFS I feel bad watching Cech playing out from the back. It looks unnatural for Cech, painful and heartstopping for me to watch.

          1. I think Cech is like that because of his age and career. Hes won everything, he has no pressure as he wont be dropped either.

        2. Which one that the woeful defence left him stranded with, he saved us several times and not sure what you mean by no composure, he had a really good game, better than the clown at the other end who cost an awful lot of money but couldn’t hang onto many of the shots, blinkered vision I’m afraid.

  14. Bellerin should never start again. Woeful going forward and awful defending. The only positive about his play is his pace which is useless as he can not cross and is easily beat by his attacker!

Xhaka really offers nothing anymore and we should use this season to work on the Guendozi Torreira midfield pairing.

Ozil was poor today and is looking like he’s given up on football just now saw nothing from him which is a shame as on his day I think he’s one of the best I the world.

Lacazette and Auba should start next game let them form a lethal partnership I don’t understand this fascination with only playing one up top!

Didn’t expect much from the first two games against Chelsea and City. We’re a work in progress so not going to get too upset by them as feel they have come far too soon for us.

  15. I honestly don’t think a #10 is needed anymore the way it looks like the game is going. 3 solid CM’s works better. Our forwards are really letting us down so far in more ways than one. Player issue not coach.

    1. Agree, it was just a waste of space in a tough away game

Arsenal can use a no 10 if they play at home against a weaker opponent

    1. Our 2 goals shoulve been enough.

Great goalie wouldve saved Pedros and Alonsos shots. Cech is only “OK”.

Any defender with pace, wouldve beat donkey Morata in a chase.

Strikers win you matches, defense win you titles.

    2. Auba can only be blamed for not scoring sitters – sorry but conceding wasn’t his fault, be fair.. the team cannot distinguish itself from other teams the reason is this group of players is yet to find it’s form but will do… sooner or later. Slating individual players is pointless, our effort was poor and our Will was pretty much the same – we are lacking “industry”, its the vital ingredient to teamwork.
In simple terms we didn’t work hard enough hence we are in 17th spot.

  16. I just honestly do not understand this “Emery Ball”. Players look lost. Do not tell me he did not have enough time to prepare the team. Look at Sarri they at least look like they played together.
Absolutely pathethic from start to finish.
Not sure what Xhaka is doing during the training and brain dead Lacca perfect

    1. Remember how awful Guardiola and Klopp were in their first season?

Klopp inherited players from Rodgers that do not fit into his tactics and he had to replace them with more talented players (Salah, Mane, etc)

      1. zero points 2 games in isn’t acceptable though. I know they were two hard teams, but that’s not good enough of an excuse for a top 6 club. He has had enough time to at least grab a point against this chelsea side. And the fact the players had no idea what to do when Hazard got put on? Maybe Emery did have a plan for this and it was just executed poorly, but it looked like Hazard was allowed to do whatever he wanted.

      2. I did not watch Klopp honestly, but Guardiola was not that bad kinda watchable.
I just have problem that players are jogging back. They do not know what to do.
And they had whole preseason to look like a team at least. I am okay with a defeat.
However, not like this crap display with no passion….

  17. I can’t imagine how our last coach managed to coach this team. One can easily collapse coaching this group of players.

  18. Attacking wise we should of scored more, defence wise we could of conceded more. The first 30 mins our defence was all over the place and this so called playing out the back puts us in more trouble, our defenders and GK don’t look comfortable playing that way. I’m disappointed to get back in the game to then go on and lose it, theres a lot of work still to be done with this team and quite a few players aren’t going to make the cut.

  19. What I get from this match is that we won’t finish in the top 4 but we will improve from last season.

We have no where near the quality in my opinion to finish in the top 4. Unless we spend in January which is unlikely

Central midfield and defense remains a big problem as well as we need a top winger

    Torreira isn’t enough

I think Kroenke is limiting Emery’s spending allowance to purchase Arsenal

    1. And yet we spent £18m on Sokratis.

Fum fact, Diego Godin had a release clause of 18 millions which United activated. I know he didnt move but we didnt even try and went right away (gods know why) for Sokratis.

      1. Godin would have been better. as you said at least we could try to sign him or someone else.
Sokratis hasn’t been good since day one.
        £18 mil on Sokratis
        £35 mil on Mustafi
        Big waste sadly

  20. Seeing guendouzi looking gutted after the game shows the kind of character he is. Pure class!!! Winners hate loosing. We need more of such attitude. How can I loose a derby game and still b all smiles with the opponents????this arsenal players are softies. Oh my invincibles

  21. city at home and chelsea on the road, I assumed we would get maybe 1 pt at best, now we string some wins

  22. I think at the end it was more of a quality matter when the fresh Hazard and Kovacic came on in the second half. They along with Pedro were too quick for our defenders, hence Alonso’s goal, which apparently came after a wrong back pass from Lacazette.
    Some remarks about the game:
    1. Torreira is still not 100% integrated into the team, but will definitely improve.
    2. Emery must employ a plan B to move the ball forward from the keeper, cause we seem to suffer from teams who press high on the pitch.
    3. Özil’s substitution was a good sign from Emery that there are no favourites in this team, although Ramsey didn’t offer anything special after coming on.
    4. Positives: Gouendouzi (this lad is a gem), our back line is improving and the team is starting to play some exciting football.
Hopefully, we will start collecting points from the next match on. COYG!

    1. I think it was more of the fact that we lost a game that we did not deserve to win.
I think it was more of a case of players playing who did not deserve to play.
I think it was more of a case that Dick Emery has no tactical skill at all.
I thin it was more of a case that Dick Emery was chosen because he was the cheapest option and Stan Kroenke does not care about results – just profits.
I think it is morte of a case of people like you looking for positives when there are none – torreira not integrating? does he miss his mum? Plan B? I see we are aiming the same Wenger criticism at Dick Emery and you see Ozil’s substitution as a positive thing – the substitution of a player as a sign of improvement?
The one thing I know is that Dick Emery is NOT Arsenal quality just like Bruce Rioch wasn’t.
      He IS Bruce Rioch…

      1. Yes, it is a huge improvement in comparison to last year’s Wenger team and to the attitude of the players. Had Xhaka not received a yellow card, he wouldn’t be subbed off that quickly, cause he is the only DMF one who can provide the attackers with some good passes/crosses. (although he can’t defend that well). Torreira has not found his form yet, that’s why he hasn’t started a match yet; when he is fully fit he should start along Gouendouzi.
With plan B I meant a change of tactics according to the opposition, what you also said.
Personally, I’m not giving up already, like some fans like you do, cause for Emery it is going to take some time to implement his tactics and for the players to get used to them, what is for sure, is that we are going to need some reinforcements in January.

  23. The squad is full of self joy players and without winning mentality. Pity for Emery to manage what Wenger left for him. Ozil, Mustafi, Xhaka – players Emery need to kick out from Arsenal. Give the space to others who deserve to play for the badge.

  24. I know it’s his 2nd competitive game but if Emery hasn’t realized how calamitous Bellerin & Xhaka are, then he’s not serious at all. Mhki is also very lazy at defending & Ozil may as well retire from club football. I know Wenger left us in a mess but Emery is also not doing any favors to himself with his starting lineups.

  25. That’s what happens when you start off handicapping yourself. You play Ozil, Xhaka, Iwobi, Bellrin in one starting lineup you are asking for disaster. Although I admit Iwobi stepped up today. still, far too many passengers on that pitch and as predictable as always, Arsenal cannot hold onto even a point. We all feared Arsenal were going to concede, and as is customary it happened. It shows the club are stil bottlers, there is still a losing mentality at the club and so many of the players just aren’t good enough. Yes, these were two tough fixtures, but Zero points, bottom of the table is quite simply not acceptable at a big club. It’s your job to produce results.

    1. If you compare Chelsea’s and Arsenal’s squads, it is obvious that they are a level above us. Bringing in both Kovacic and Hazard when our defenders were starting to get tired was the decisive moment of the game. I think Bellerin did well going forward and we should have exploited more his pace. On the other hand, some Chelsea players had really good games, such as Alonso, Jorginho, Pedro, Willian. That’s why I’m not complaining that much about the first 2 games. We all knew they would be extremely difficult and let’s face it, we don’t belong among the top-4 teams in the league anymore.

      1. This XI didn’t even have Hazard in it until later in the game and we were still 2-0 down at a point. You are a new manager, you’ve known for months you had these two hard fixtures to start your career, but first 20 minutes you are 2-0 down. He doesnt get lineup right, squad looks unprepared. Why? Most our players didnt go to world cup, there aren’t players like Willian, Hazard who are pushing for a move. Yes, Chelsea have better players than us, but Sarri is just as new to the EPL as Emery. But why does Sarri look like he was more prepared for this game? If this were United and they lost their first 2 EPL matches it would be a big deal and a problem. So it’s the same with Arsenal unless we are dropping the standards of what we expect from the team. Zero points two games in is not okay.

        1. My expectations were limited after the mediocre transfer window. Many of us addressed the lack of intention of winning some serious silverware from the owners and the board, so the fact that we lost against better sides than us came not as a surprise to me. What matters now the most, is to bounce back against West Ham and to grow a winning mentality under Emery’s guidance.

          1. Has Sarri won anything in his coaching career; yet people slate Emery after 2 games? Who would want to coach Arsenal for some of these fans?

  26. I never wanted Emery at Arsenal right from the start.
So I’m not bothered about the result really – its just the first of the nails in his coffin.
We needed a top class manager – not someone who happened to be unemployed and cheap to hire.
I think, looking at the performances against City and Chelsea that we will be fighting a relegation battle with Emery in charge.
The man is incompetent – why pass from the back against two of the best clubs in the league and in Europe?
Does this man employ tactics ? or is it just hoping for the best?
I’m sorry, but I cannot find anything good to say about Arsenal.
    We are in terminal decline…

      1. Why not enjoy the games? The Board, pardon frakking Kronke did not invest any money in the team so we have what we have, and some of our players will improve very much (Guendouzi, Torreira, Niles, Nelson, maybe even Iwobi have future in football) so keep you head high – we will be Arsenal (we want) again!

          1. Leon, if you not want Unai Emery, who did you want who was available and prepared to take on coaching Arsenal after Arsene Wenger, with the administrative setup (ie the Trinity rather than all power in one person) instituted by Gazidis?

      2. I never rated Emery.
So I won’t be too upset if he fails
Arsenal needs rebuilding – he is not up to the job.
        I am sure of that…

    1. Emery is not the problem….
      This is not Emery team…..
He was restricted to limited budget plan, so he has no choice than to manage the ones he got……
Guendouzi is special, he is a gem……
He is so composed on the ball and has incredible football brain…..
To me is a better football player than Torreira…..

Let the Board give Emery 200million and see if Emery won’t deliver…..
On a good day Emery can’t have Ozil Ramsey in his team…

  27. I have to accept d fact dat our manager is working on the team. Our crosses into d opposition 18 was top notch such is able to Win u d match but poor finishes oh AUBA! I have confidence we are improving. it can only get better. thumbs up emery

    1. Agree with you on crosses – it seems now they spot somebody and send the ball direct unlike before was just crosses for the sake of it

  28. while ozil plays in our team we will win absolutely nothing . he is so depressive , his negativity is a cancer in our team. when will emery get the balls to drop him for once and for all . as it is we will not be making any money on his resale , so let him rot in the reserves. who, in their right mind, would actually put a bid in for ozil the happpy?. we should cut our losses in january with him and his swiss buddy xhaka. what a pair of plonkers.

  29. My take is arsenal has four Star players why does Emery refuse to play them together Auba Ozil Laca Miki

  30. Aubameyang was poor, but fans are keeping mute,if it were to be iwobi or welbeck missing chances and being useless, fans would have bring the heavens on them and called them headless.

laca’s back pass killed us today but he’s immune to criticism from fans..

Bellerin was targeted all day and the boy tried all he could for his age..

my conclusion is that we should go all out for a world class winger of about €50m, if we will have any chance of taking 3 points against a big side this year.

As usual we were punished by our opponent’s high pressing fast wingers in Hazard, William and Pedro, while we had none.

iwobi was our best on the flank today, though not a performance of a world class winger because that isn’t his position..

A zaha, coman and bailey is needed asap badly in January

    1. Because Laca and Auba had ONE bad match. Iwobi and Welbeck especially, have had SEASONS of bad performances.

      Do you see a difference?

    2. We all know Aubameyaang was bad today. But this is probably the first bad games he’s had since he’s arrived. The guy scored 10 goals in just half a season, so he’s hardly a player to worry about. The consistent underperformers in this team are a much bigger issue.

      1. Miracle won’t be enough to save us this season. Such a disjointed squad with several good players suited to different formations and tactics mixed with average players pulling the team down.
Plus having a coach having to adapt to the epl like pep, poch and klopp. city playing from the back was as comical as ours. remember how lloris used to have great match and still shipped 4,5,6 goals because their defending was so shit and don’t forget klopp awful 1st season 60 pts

    3. Very nice said, I wonder why not every fan can see the same way.
I’m afraid Auba is getting a bit too relaxed and sloppy in front of goal, besides everyone says that Laca is the better finisher, so let’s start with Laca as CF and Auba as LW in the next game, to see if they can combine together.

  31. The first goal was purely Miky’s fault because Willian pulled Bellerin out of position theniky is expected to fill and follow Alonso but failed..then goal..Auba misssssssssssssssssssssssssed chances….Laca make a mistake….then goal….Miky missed chances…Iwobi who is not a 90 min. player missed chances….xhaka did nothing…ozil did nothing……Goundouzi still the best…Emry’s tactics worked for the last 15 min. of the first half…and i hope he will continue to work with THE BEST 11 by benching Xhaka, iwobi and ozil…..

  32. Lacazette was responsible for the build up to Chelsea’s winning goal. I still don’t get why Emery would opt to use bellerin ahead of lightsteiner. Beats me. Lastly, Petr cech was horrible for Chelsea’s first two goals…asides that, he was okay in goal. Chelsea found out that arsenal we’re using the right wing to punish them so they decided to choke that area so arsenal won’t see clear passes there. Aubameyang was wasteful today. The chances he missed, I think lacazette could have scored those. Ozil was anonymous mostly…but he did assist in defence, surprisingly. Mustafi was great today. Can’t say the same about socratis. Mustafi always bailed him out. Asides the Chelsea goals, arsenal defended well as a team. I still don’t buy their idea of playing from the back. They look stupid doin that. Guendouzi was our best performing player today. Xhaka is beginning to let me down. Besides I don’t see why xhaka and guendouzi will play side by side in a 4-2-3-1 formation. It’s meant to be terreira and guendouzi. Unless we’re playing 4-3-3. Other teams should learn from arsenal how to score Chelsea.

  33. I’m certainly gutted, but there are positives here and yes, I’m just as baffled as everyone about the starting XI, but Guendouzi, Torreira, Nacho, Iwobi and Mustafi were all superb today. Emery must drop Xhaka, Ramsey, Ozil (against pressing teams only), and Bellerin. I’m not going to address 0 points after 2 games bc we couldn’t have been screwed worse than getting Man City and then Chelsea away in the first two games when we’re just now instilling a new system after 22 YEARS (though it’s admittedly unexpected that Emery can’t understand that Xhaka and Bellerin are so incredibly football retarded. They have immense talent but as I’ve said for years, they both lack a football brain and perhaps basic intelligence, seriously.) I applaud our effort and shame any who shame that team performance. Horrible starting XI again, but let’s properly assess progress (or lack thereof) from here to the international break. Up Gunnas! Bravo to the away fans today. It’s not the end of the world, if you didn’t expect a slow start w this bullchit schedule, you’re overly optimistic.

One last positive: Emery is not afraid to sub off underperforms early (Xhaka, Ozil, Ramsey).

Gutted today but optimistic for tomorrow,
    Drayton

  34. There is just no justification for playing Bellerin when Lichtsteiner is fit and Xhaka when Torreira is fit. If Emery makes these huge mistakes again I will reconsider my currently high opinion of him. He surely MUST NOW SEE, how useless both those useless WENGER PLAYERS ARE. YOU CANNOT PROPERLY COACH rank bad players.

    1. ? Xhaka playing for Arsenal should be against the law! Bellerin too awful just awful. I’m in agreement if these two linuep next week my opinion is gonna quickly change on emery

  35. Most of you here are complaining about Xhaka performance forgetting that we couldn’t control the game when Xhaka was subbed in the second half. We lost because of Emery’s substitution, though Torreira was doing enough defensive duties yet we couldn’t put enough passes to hurt Chelsea in the second half

    1. Xhaka cannot control midfield, thats a fact, not an opinion. We conceded twice in 10 mins on his watch.

We lost second half because we looked like playing for the draw.

    2. I thought am the only one that noticed that…..
Xhaka diagonal passes really caused confusion to Chelsea defense…..
Even Monreal couldn’t penetrate like he did in the first passes…
All this was because of Xhaka removal….
I don’t like Xhaka but his removal was really felt…..

  36. Emery will fix his mistakes middle of the match but they aren’t mistakes he should’ve made in the first place. After first game Xhaka should’ve been DROPPED. Ozil, that’s his last chance surely. if he’s a starter next weekend then Emery is just incapable of making the right decisions and we have another Neymar/Emery situation incoming. Mesut is just not good enough and I know he had a rough world cup, but who cares, you get paid to give your all for your club and again he plays like he does not care. No urgency. Even though Miki had a patchy game he shows more commitment than a man who has been here for 5 years!

  37. The fact that Mustafi was again found wanting seems to have escaped the notice of contributors.Along with xhaka he should not start against West Ham.We cannot play a high line against the likes of Man City and Chelsea with the poor quality defenders we have.Time to give the young Greek a chance?

  38. West Ham will not be an easier game. Arsenal will need to work harder. They can still win the league.

    1. He has the players to at least put out a better lineup than he did. He needs to make tougher decisions. Maybe he is too nice, I don’t know, but some of the starters had no business playing a minute today

    2. Sorry it is Emery team, he’s paid to manage, he picked from what’s at the club which he said he could do in the interview. He is picking the wrong players.

    3. Wenger was restricted to the same limited budget plan why does Emery get the excuse (Emery will come good and challenge for 4th/5th depending on how well Liverpool cement themselves in the top 4 where they by rights should of been over us once chelsea/city turned up.) It’s not a coincidence that Emery plays the Wenger favs it’s the best we have and we didn’t spend any money in the summer either. Wenger always had to buy what he could not what he wanted (big fan of Hazard, Kante (when he became good), Mata, Sterling, Silva etc. before they transferred to rivals, board wouldn’t sanction their fee/wages.)

        1. Angus, even if you restrict analysis of performance to Arsene Wenger’s last 2 seasons of 22 in total, Unai Emery is being slated after 2 games against the last 2 EPL champions.
There are some people on here, who need to have perspective and are totally unfair in their assessment.

  40. We should drop Ozil…
We are playing with just 10 men when Ozil is in team..
He is doing nothing for team.. Emery should be brave to drop Ozil..

      1. You wenger boys forgot that when ramsey is in the team we are in big minus as well, not that just he is no use at all but he is often in a way of our attackers…. last game he has contact with the ball 3 (three) fraking times!
First he did well, taking ball and passing it backwards (of course),
secondly from the right side he had a great oportunitiy to asist with Laza and Auba in the center but he (greatest wenger striker) did shoot (weak and in the keeper)
third, he had a shot over the goal, centraly….
that was fraking ramsey in the yesterdays game.

  41. i wrongly predicted 2Pts from our first few games – the worries really begin if we can only return 1Point out of 9 by drawing with them-lot over Stratford sides.

  42. It’s early days folks..

    It will take time..

Remember? Like the vast amount of time Wenger was afforded.

We can’t buy success, so we have to build it by shaping a team to be effective overtime.

Doesn’t happen overnight. I trust emery will get rid of those who don’t consistently perform over time and when he can get their replacements.

The man won three uefa cups on modest means by forging a team. Thing was he built it mainly from Spanish players who are technically better.

When Ozil, welbeck and Xhaka are gone we will be heading in the right direction IMO.

    1. I agree BUT Emery needs start AXING players.

      GK Leno
      RB Licht
      CB Musta/Sokratis
      CB Mavro/Holding
      LB Monreal
      DM Torreira
      CM Guendouzi
      CM Iwobi
      RF Mkhitaryan

  43. We will never challenge for the title while Kroenke owns / controls the club. However, he will ensure his investment remains viable – so the aim will be Top 4 and the odd cup win now and then.

Having said that, would still want our head coach (whover it is) to instill some pride, passion and discipline in our play.

Where I must give credit to Emery – is taking Xhaka and Ozil off. I honestly hope Bellerin can also learn something from this.

Cech – being forced to play with the ball at his feet, he appeared to be a little better today and also seemed to be more sensible in punting it long on the odd occassion – this is a decision he will need to make himself and stamp his authoirty.

Geundouzi – when we were 2 nil down, I was wondering if any of our players / losers would stand up and be counted. Suddenly, I see this 19 year – he’s everywhere, demanding the ball from the centre backs and keeper, trying to win the ball near the centre circle and also getting involved nearer the opposition box. I honestly believe he stepped up today and his desire played a part in our levelling the score. Yes, he’s not perfect, but at least he has a good degree of ability and has the desire. As of now, would pick him over Xhaka (and I am one of those who hadn’t completely lost faith in Xhaka yet).

Bellerin – always loved him but he really needs to step up now under the new regime.

Ozil – felt this way for ages, never want to see him playing for Arsenal again. No question about ability (though I don’t think he’s half as good as many think he is), the issue is desire. He is a luxury player, who would have added an extra dimension to the Invincibles (a team of winners) but to a struggling team, I’m not sure I want him around.

Iwobi – not losing faith in him yet. Very good at keeping the ball and getting us from the defensive third to the attacking third – decision making / final ball needs a lot of improvement.

Next game, hopefully we will be picking up three points. Hope Emery has the guts to with the below starting line up:

Cech, Lichtsteiner, Mustafi, Sokratis, Monreal, Guendouzi, Torreira, Ramsey, Aubameyang (LW), Mkhitaryan, Lacazette.

If Emery is so keen on the press, I’d give Welbeck a chance on the left, he might be the equivalent of Bambi on Ice, but at least it is 100% guaranteed he will put in more effort than Ozil – that constant harrying / work-rate is something that can set the early tone.

    1. Spot on mate, apart from Ramsey, who should not be given any playing time, till he sorts out his contact issues, cause I really don’t like his attitude lately…

  44. I think as an Arsenal fan its the high time we identify our team and make lazy players like Ozeil and Bellerin sit on the bench.Xhaka has nothing to offer at Arsenal and he needs to reduce weight to try and compose himself. We tried today though we lost the match.Chelsea started the same way when Conte came and they ended up wining the EPL.We still have some games ahead that we can redeem ourselves with. All I not lost members.

  45. Our fullbacks are being used by opponents as their cutting edge. They are being turned up and down as if they don’t Exist.Guendozi is a real warrior for us this season. We need to identify a real partner for him then we can play the game going foward.Auba seems like an Ozeil in big matches. He gets lost .Lets all trust in what we have guys.

    1. Exactly auba has been awful against city 3 times Chelsea in Dublin and today and was rubbish against utd at old Trafford and spurs at Wembley he hasn’t turned it on against the big boys!

  46. Lots of you are miserable C. Quality wise chelsea and city are superiour to us. Only an idiot would expect miracles from these two games. I think we should stop using the likes of bellerin, xhaka, ozil as i dont see any improvements so no point in contunuing. I am happy with the way we play but this team needs not only to adjust to the new style but also quality. We lack quality realy bad. 5 players at least and two of them must be world class. World class winger and defender for a start.

    1. We deserved to win this match. If you watched am sure you concur with me.We played well but lost the plot towards end of the match. Its just a matter of redeemed ourselves and starting to win matches.

  47. How much better was it seeing the team wear Red Socks? Why have we allowed kit manufacturers to dictate what we’re once considered true Arsenal values? Its the same as the change strip-Arsenal wear Yellow and Blue.
    Just saying

      1. You’re right Phil, the Arsenal throws away traditions such as the shirt similarly to how it has dispensed with the “hard men” of its successful past.

  48. I think everyone is expecting alot from Arsenal. I never saw arsenal beating anyone in the top 6 this season. We did great to come back from 2-0 down but too many players just don’t take arsenal seriously. Ozil, Xhaka, bellerin. These guys just didn’t care about Arsenal. I really would like Emery to show some balls and bench Ozil. Hargreaves said it the best. “Put Welbeck on who will give his heart and soul, push Myhkitarian centre and give Ozil a reality check.” Xhaka, Ozil and bellerin were comical. Aubemayang was surprisingly poor. Guendouzi was excellent.

    1. We did take 1 more point and concede two less goals from these fixtures last year so y’know… reality.

      1. Trying to have a dig at the team or manager? Remember, Chelsea chose not to play for Conte but the team are still the previous winners. City have gotten better and are far more confident whilst arsenal regressed by the end of the season. We were never going to win the games. So y’know… reality.

  49. I can really see why Emery wanted Ever Banega this summer, Xhaka just isn’t it at the moment. If you watch la-liga you’d notice that Arsenal under Emery really play like a spanish team, play steady and from the back, this is a system that could really work well with the right technical and agile players or against lesser teams for now. Also it would really help if we took our chances!! Hector needs to learn from the bench for now, guys has played too many games now and still no improvements, he’ll come good though. i really thought we’d go with experience this game. But i like how open minded Emery is, he doesn’t care who you are, if u not playing well, he’s not afraid to sub anybody, that really refreshing, all his subs where on point too. We’ll get there though.

  50. I think Emery is a Manager who really takes time to imprint his DNA on his teams. Remember his PSG team only kicked on after a full season. He needs time and a few more transfer windows. I think he will come good. He will need to be more ruthless in his team selection though. Poor selection has hurt us 2 games in a row now.

    1. True that. He needs to be brave now. Its important we win and win very well against West Ham. Guys like Xhaka should be dropped for now, they should show why they deserve to be in the team. But im really optimistic about this team, i just pray the fans are patient enough, the EPL can be very unforgiving, we get enough pressure from the media to now also have our own fan base against a very new manager. For me, this season he gets a free pass.

  51. Guendozi, what a player this lad might turn out to be. Only 19 years old but making all our so called experienced Midfielders look like wimpers they really are.

He is showing Diaby and Cesc maturity on the ball at the same age..

  52. Naai, ‘noun’, verb, Naai-ing, adjective Naai-er.
Naai is a South African Afrikaans slang term meaning f#*k

    1. Yes Dan, if and when Arsene Wenger takes uo a managerial position elsewhere you can follow his team there. Otherwise why not get behind the manager and the team at the Arsenal?

  53. Sok and mustafi poor together and auba gettig hos boots round the way was worrying.
Postives are once we may have calitulated at 2 nil and liked the fact ozil abd xhaka re subbed.

Didnt like emery shooting off dowb the tunnel at the end dint like managers that do that!

    1. Emery was pissed, no more daddy wenger giving love, hairdryer treatment incoming. Wenger didn’t have the ball to substitute xhaka, let alone Ramsey and ozil yet emery did it in his 1St two games.

Yes emery is experimenting and currently failing but he doesn’t cut player slack, not in form get subbed. Even favourite like Ramsey ozil

  54. Stop blaming cos you want someone to blame, the iwobi that’s one of the most criticised players equalised for us and some poeople here still can’t appreciate what he did, he played very well today, he didn’t lose the ball, did okay defense wise, assisted and scored, what are the things you actually want?, mkhitaryan who’s always blamed scored and assisted. Bellerin didn’t play totally well, but he wasn’t so awful to deserve all this criticism, he was duly involved in all those crosses that came from the right
Cech and our back 4 might have looked nervy while trying to play from the back, but Chelsea didn’t create any chance from winning balls in that area
And we didn’t lose the match cos of Emery’s selections, we didnt lose cos we were trying to play from the back, we lost the match cos aubameyang, mkhitaryan and iwobi missed sitters , we lost cos lacazette passed the ball back to the edge of his box in a counter attack
I’m sure if we had scored those sitters, opinions would have been different

    1. Those three strikers need to develop awareness while in the box. They only needed to control the ball and score simple goals like Alexis used to do.Perfect their game.Only that

      1. Sincerely, if those balls had gone in, it would have been a landslide, and people here would have said different things, the team created chances well and looked better playing from the back compared to last week
But irrespective of whatever the score would have been, MESUT OZIL IS FINISHED

        1. Yea.He looks like he is in the final stages of his career. That man is just a waste of time.We need young and motivated players to take charge.I don’t see him lasting for two more season in Arsenal. He’ll B shipped out ASAP.He cant justify his value to the club.

  55. Park the changing arsenals style of play overnight and back to defensive repetitious shape drills.
be nice to see a cb soeaking and vocalising as well poor old Rio was going mad and how lax we were.
    ps sokratis sh1t.

  56. For all of u slating emery, swap the two managers and we still lose, a team who has a 70mil keeper vs a team whose entire budget is 70mil yeah let’s blame the coach, subbing ozil is major positive for me shows no one is special, if y’all can give wenger 10years to fail and can’t give emery a season u should change club

    Maybe u love losing 8 – 2, 10 – 2, 6 – 0, we are a work in progress if u can’t accept it go support city

    1. coach put out a bad lineup. If Wenger got criticized for it, so should Emery. Nobody saying Emery is finished and won’t succeed, but his lineups must be better. Maybe he’s learning his lessons now, but I’d rather it not come at the cost of 3 points. (And doing better than AW’s horrible record in the 2nd half of his tenure is hardly a victory).

Either way, Arsenal will need more transfer windows to get rid of the garbage and bring in better talent. Emery is the boss and I hope he makes the tough calls to drop players that don’t work for him or the team. Mesut Ozil’s performances have been unacceptable for ages. He needs to be dropped and then put on the market to a Chinese club. Probably the only league that would pay his stupid wages at this point.

      1. Did you not think that Emery has considered this? Torreira is probably still not entirely match fit for continual pressing despite whatever article pops up. You would risk injuring him. Again Lich is also new and probably not match fit yet. Where they are new to the PL. So given those two positions who else goes in there? I’m sure he will change as he demonstrated by taking players off but we can’t criticise a lineup when we don’t know the players fitness levels.

        1. If Xhaka is fit so is Licht. And Licht has countless Serie A titles, is a UCL veteran. Been part of top Juve defenses. he’s always ready to go. And looked ready to go against City

          1. Spot on RSH, Lichtsteiner half fit (which he is well above) is a better professional footballer than some chosen ahead of him.

      2. The lineup might have been wrong but we didn’t lose cos of the lineup (most of the lineups here included aubameyang, mkhitaryan, who missed sitters, it involved lacazette that gave them their third goal) so why is emery being blamed for the lineup?
And for you that’s looking for someone to blame, all the best o, cos you’ll blame and it’ll become your hobby

    1. @Kieron
Please accept my apology for being rude to you. I was so pissed off with the result, drank far too much, hence my bad attitude, sorry mate.

  57. we may have missed a few chances but thats part of the game…..

we did very well though theres improvement

cant expect to win every game against the big 5 as we are rebuilding

  58. I’ve definitely seen line-up mistakes by Emery in both matches. I believe Lichtsteiner and Torreira should have started.
    Bellerin is consistently poor.

BTW I’m not slamming Emery or saying Wenger is better. Emery has proven to me that he is an improvement over Wenger by Getting Torreira and Guendouzi and pushing/directing players more.

But starting Lichtsteiner instead of Bellerin and Torreira over Xhaka May have helped

Also Aubameyang missed a sitter. Not criticising. He is an amazing striker and all miss here and there

  59. I hope Lich starts the next game, Bellerin still has to learn how to def better and Lich is someone he can/should be learning from.

Although, I do think his final ball was a lot better today, he picked out players on a number of occasions rather than poorly cross it to nobody. Shouldn’t we at least recognise that he has improved? If he puts in the effort on the training ground then I do not think it is unrealistic to think Bellerin will improve at being a defender, remember how well he done when he covered then replaced Debuchy…

Iwobi was playing like a player with purpose and confidence, it appear that Emery suits him, oh and has he put some muscle on recently? He looked bigger. He used his size well which was pleasing to see, if he can use this performance as a springboard then he could become one of the 1st names on the teamsheet.

High line with 2 slow CBs and a poor positional RB was going to cost us and it did, the real problem for me though was the lack of chasing the ball from Xhaka along with lack of CM leadership for Guendouzi, no surprise Guendouzi got better when Torreira came on for Xhaka. Lesson here is Torreira and Guendouzi work better as a unit and we can aid this by having AMN in there for a 3 man CM. If we are going to have slow CBs pushing up then AMN pace would be vital for closing down quick breaks like Chavski did.

I’ve said this since day one of Auba arriving, he should play out wide as an inside forward, we have a proven CF in Laca who came to us with years of being a proven goalscorer but he has shown great ability to link up the CM to the attack with his dropping deep… Which in turn aids Auba who has great intelligence to exploit Lacas movement. I want to see Laca start upfront with Auba out wide, see if Iwobi can perform like he did today on the right and that could be a good front 3.

    1. True.
High backline and high intensive pressing go together. That seems to be the way Emery wants to play, and it is a modern way.
But he is caught with players, that can’t perform it – yet?
Yesterday we got caught, because Chelsea, as did Man City, exploit our right defensive side, where Bellerin goes forward (yesterday he did very well), but Mkitharyan most of the time doesn’t go back quickly enough. That was the first goal + several other Chelsea chances.
Chelseas second goal came from a combination of a high slow backline AND the lack of pressure on the ball from our offensive players.
So yesterday Emery had the personnel and good tactics for going forward, but not the players to defend. This problem can only be solved, when/if the offensive players learn to defend which they haven’t done for years, or if the offensive players are sold and new ones brought in.

  60. I have read through most of the comments here, and I have discovered that, most persons, if they were given the chance to manage Arsenal, they would fail woefully.

Some persons are finding it difficult to understand that 70percent of the reasons we have not started playing the Emery’s way is because of the set of players that Wenger left before his overdue departure.
When Emery was at PSG, he would not have a lazy player like Ozil playing at the same time with Mikhy. In addition to that, there is an average Xhaka to accommodate in the team simply because we do not have enough personnel to make certain that players, such as Ozil, Mikhy, Bellerin do not have a place on our team sheet.
Wenger mismanaged Alexis situation and in return, he brought in Mikhy, who is not as good as Alexis. He is a player who does a few things better than Ozil. The two them can not be in thesame team.
Ozil should have been let go, not Alexis, and if Alexis situation was inevitable, it shouldn’t be to give Ozil that type of contract he got.
Under Wenger, laziness and nonchalant attitude became acceptable in the team.

We cannot do everything in one season, and not certainly after two games. This a fact we must know.

The gradual solution starts with gradually phasing Ozil, Xhaka and Bellerin out of the team. With these three players, we won’t play good and result-oriented football.
We need somebody to take the pressure off our defence, that comes with having a winger like Leon Bailey. With a player like that, our opponents will not come at us full throttle like Chelsea did in the second have. Hazard did for them what I am asking Leon Bailey to come and do for us.

    1. I got a few things to question in your pile of trash… I mean post.

You blamed players EMERY PICKED as the reason why Arsenal can’t do this style. Wenger didn’t call up Emery and tell him to pick those players, Wenger didn’t tell Emery what team lineup will be playing… Emery picked that himself.

Xhaka not good enough? Emery picked him to start for the 2nd game in a row and for the 2nd game in a row he has been subbed and our CM looked tougher afterwards. Can’t blame that on Wenger, Wenger isn’t with us and Emery is picking who he wants… Team selection is on Emerys head. Not like he has to play a kid instead of Xhaka, we do have a new signing who is bench warming… the new signing who came as a DM.

The contract issues is down to Gazidis, people blindly said it was Wenger but then they seen Iwobi given a new deal and people was like WTF…. If Wenger was here then he would have been blamed but as he isn’t then people have had to think that maybe the CEO who deals with the business side could be the one who looks after contracts. Not only player contracts but also sponsorship contracts, partnership contracts, industrial contracts… Ramsey now is doing what Ozil and Alexis did… Wenger isn’t here, Gazidis is and look how we are STILL A JOKE when it comes to player contracts.

You moaned at Wenger for picking Mkhitaryan yet Wenger wanted Martial, Wenger pushed for Martial and Wenger was overruled by Gazidis because head of recruitment said Mkhi, we ended up with Mkhi and not Martial who would have been a direct Alexis replacement… but Sven looks to have gotten Mkhi to lay the foundation for Auba…

You then moan about not having a good enough winger. Both our goals came from the ‘wingers’, I say it like that due to them playing as inside forwards but you don’t seem to know anything other than ‘winger’ so I dumbed it down for you.

  61. Simple fact… the player cost us the game today not the coach. we started the game with no energy or drive then conceded 2 in no time… mikhi auba and laca were the culprit today… mikhi poor cover for bellin auba 2 sitters then laca with a back pass near his 18yard box…. the last 15min of the 1st half showed the players have quality but lack belief, is like we go into big game mentally defeated with the believe of we cant get a win. is it just me or were we playing for a draw in the second half???….

    1. Emery is the one who started Xhaka in CM for the 2nd game running and for the 2nd game running Emery is the one who made the sub to bring him off and our CM picked up with a DM replacing him, our new signing Torreira.

Guess that is the players fault? For Emery picking the wrong starting lineup?

Nothing wrong with making mistakes, he is learning the EPL and a whole bunch of new players, just cause he made a mistake doesn’t mean we should jump on his back… but at the same time it is being delusional to ignore reality to fit your narrative.

  62. People really need to calm down on here. Sell Ozil, sell Xhaka, sell Ramsey, sell Bellerin… Replace them with WHO? You believe for a minute we could sell them all and replace them all? Chelsea were then previous champions and City are the reigning champions. Chelsea CHOSE not to play under Conte – they have all the swagger and confidence they need and rightly deserve. AFC do not have any of that and realistically this season is a battle for top 6 because your rivals are City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham who are all further along than AFC with confidence, stability and a fan base which is RESPECTFUL. Honestly I have never seen such fans that demand immediate gratification and the speed at which they criticise the team and manager.

Glad we scored and could have won it. We were never going to win the first two games but we played better attacking football and pressed a little better. You think the stamina for consistent pressing comes in one season? Hell no. Any athlete will tell you where being able to run, not jog – run consistently takes months of training.

Shut up and wait for the end of the season, Emery is clearly trying different things and he’s only had the entire squad available for just over 3 weeks. He must try different set ups to get the balance right, he needs time and all the criticism from fans as well as the negative sky sports team who have always been anti Arsenal do not help.

You call yourselves fans on here? I am sorely disappointed in the comments on here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I’m not surprised why they laugh at us when we carry on like this. No class and no commitment.

    1. You are so right.
Many of the comments here are absolutely rubbish.

We have probably gotten the most credited manager, we could hope to get, and he deserves respect and time to build his own team after he has assessed how much he can get out of this squad, which has been allowed to underperform for several years.

It is clear he wants a different style of play, especially when the opponents have the ball.
But he can’t make the likes of Özil, Mkhitaryan and Ramsey perform disciplined defensive work in a few short weeks, when they have been allowed to run (or rather walk) around waiting for someone else to win the ball. Maybe it will never happen and maybe we should get rid of them.

But if we do it now, who do we then replace them with?

  63. This isn’t Emery’s team. Wenger built it. And Emery did well getting Torreira and Guendouzi BUT
    He has made mistakes
    1. Getting Sokratis
    2. Line-up against City
    3. Line-up against Chelsea

    Bellerin MUST be benched now!!!
Ozil too. I don’t care how much he earns

Iwobi deserves another start. Let’s see how he performs
    Start Lichtsteiner
    Start both Torreira and Guendouzi
    Start Mkhitaryan over Ozil

  64. Aubameyang is the most over rated striker I have seen in my life. No hold up play, no nothing…all he does is wait for tap ins for him to be served and even half of those, he misses!

  65. It’s funny we always look for someone to blame whenever we lose. There are a lot of positives in our game and if we were clinical enough, we would have gone home with the 3 pts. Auba could have had 2 and mikhi too but that happens sometimes but we all know there are capable of burying does chances. If the score line was 3-5 no one will bash bellerin but xhaka i understand. Please let’s be supportive, I see better days ahead.

  66. Ozil could have had an assist if Auba can stay onside. Ozil has been defending and pressing, no need to criticize this guy.

Xhaka did none of the above. He his a ball watcher, and cant win it back either. He should have left with Wenger.

  67. Slowly but surely, the manager and fans will come to realize that this lineup full of committed and serious guys is what we should be using in a 3-5-2 formation.

    Leno
    Mustafi……Mavropanos…..Sokratis
    Lichtsteiner….Torreira…..Mkitaryan….Monreal/Welbeck
    Iwobi
    Lacazette…..Aubameyang

    – As i said before Mkitaryan is NOT a winger!!! Borinho is the one who started playing him there
    – Iwobi is needed in the lineup not because he scored yesterday but because he is the only midfielder that can drive forward and hold the ball better in our shitty midfield.
    – Ramsey, Xhaka and Bellerin are championship level players, if the manager continues playing any/all of them, then we are NOT going to win any game against the top 8 teams.
    – The only shortcoming for Guendouzi is that he is tooo slow the pace of the premier league.

  68. Wow! The comments here… I’m dumbfounded. Guys relax this is not PlayStation! Can we not see this team is in “TRANSITION” !?
All the negative comments and fire Emery already what’s that about? I understand it’s disappointing to loose two games in a roll…hell most of you would have predicted an L in both just looking at the fixtures. The team is trying to find it’s identity. They are working hard at it. The almighty Guardiola didn’t even walk into city with all their millions and make them champions overnight.
I’m not saying don’t criticize the team but you can look at things from a broader perspective and not just based on the results.
I’ve seen an Arsenal trying to implement new philosophy. I’ve seen an Arsenal go away to Chelsea and not capitulate after going down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes.
Let’s be patient and support our club COYG

  69. I like the only Gwuendiose we had on the pitch ! others were circulating the pitch as they want to buy it !
