Arsenal will be aiming to return to winning ways against Villarreal following their narrow defeat to Tottenham, and this is the side that Mikel Arteta has selected.

The Gunners had enjoyed a positive pre-season before the setback against Spurs, having recorded victories over AC Milan and Newcastle United. The fans will be eager to see a response against Villarreal, particularly with the competitive campaign fast approaching. The upcoming match presents an opportunity for Arsenal to reinforce their intent and continue sharpening their form ahead of the Premier League opener.
Historical Significance Adds Weight to Clash
There is additional context to this match, as Arsenal and Villarreal share a notable history in European competition. The two sides last met in the 2021 UEFA Europa League semi-final, a tie in which Villarreal emerged victorious over two legs. Arteta’s side has come a long way since that defeat and is now widely considered one of the top two teams in English football.
With significant improvements in squad depth, Arsenal enter this encounter with a clear sense of purpose. The desire to demonstrate their progress, especially against a side with whom they have unfinished business, is likely to drive performance levels. Arteta’s selection reflects the importance of maintaining rhythm and building confidence as the new campaign draws near.
Villarreal’s Struggles Present an Opportunity
While Arsenal have recorded two wins from three pre-season fixtures, Villarreal’s preparations have been less convincing. The Spanish side is yet to register a victory in their five friendly matches, having lost twice and drawn the rest. Despite their lack of form, they may approach this clash with added motivation, particularly given the calibre of their opposition.
Facing a high-profile side like Arsenal could bring out a more competitive edge in Villarreal, who will be eager to end their pre-season on a positive note. As such, Arsenal cannot afford to take the fixture lightly. The match is expected to be more challenging than Villarreal’s recent results may suggest, as the Spanish side is likely to raise their intensity and test Arteta’s men.
Ultimately, this encounter will serve as another valuable test for Arsenal as they prepare for what promises to be a demanding season ahead.

good to see Gabriel and Timber on the bench. no Calafiori and Havertz though.
Are Newcastle talking to Arsenal for Havertz as Isak’s replacement
You’ve really got an idea bro 😂
Where is saliba?
Saint,
Saliba is in the starting line-up.👍
Alright, my eyes!
And Pepe scores 😂
GB,
You’ve just got to laugh haven’t you. They say beware of the ex, very true. 😂
He had/has amazing qualities, just wasn’t managed right
No, he has NOT. Where did he make any good run? He is player for mid team exactly like the he is now.
Only time Arsenal have defended abysmally and failed to keep a clean sheet this year. Arsenal still the best defence around. nothing to worry about.
Moon Girl,
Do I detect some sarcasm in your post.😂
I don’t do sarcasm, I just do top drawer analysis. I’ve been telling you 2 7 1. I’ve been pointing this out for flipping weeks.
TWO-SEVEN-ONE.
Don’t blame the keeper and the TWO defenders – The defending leaves so many holes so unmarked and not picked up runners because of SEVEN midfielders only Norgaard has a clue how to defend. he can certainly anchor play better than Zoob!
And some insisting Arteta has not tweaked anything? Same old from the days we were capable of defending for a clean sheet? If only he HADN’T tweaked it to 2 7 1 formation.
Arsenal are this seasons crisis club, conceding for fun. They badly need clean sheets in the coming games or can forget top 6 this season.
Poor Gyokeres, making some good runs but nobody willing to play positive passes with a hint of risk.
Seems like our tactics have not been adjusted yet
Arteta hasn’t changed any tactics
There is no telecast in my country but I can still predict that we are very slow in build up and mostly side ways passing the ball
And they get a second! 0-2
Man, we are getting destroyed. I already have a bad feeling this will carry on into the season.

Norgaard 1-2
Must be set piece
I don’t know,
Yes a corner
That’s worrying..
How are we playing??
Side way passing??
Quite a bit at the back but Saka and Matinelli getting a lot of the ball out wide but forwards being swamped in the box. Their passing through midfield is far quicker and preciser than ours.
This midfield is a joke. Getting cut through like butter and utterly terrified to even think about making a foward pass
Boo’s on the halftime whistle – in a pre season friendly!
gooners getting TOO GREEDY
It’s been so long since we’ve had an out and out striker, they’ve forgotten how to pass to him😂. And their not used to the runs he’s making.
More practice needed on the training pitch me thinks. 🤷♂️
Arsenal’s players dominated Villareal’s, but nobody guarded the half-spaces in the back
Nwaneri was so eager to show his skills off, but he didn’t drop down as deep as Odegaard did to do playmaking
Martinelli’s decision making was poor and Saka was very good but got stolen a couple of times
Our midfield would likely become more stable once Rice and Odegaard play, due to their experience
There’s already 2 midfielders deeper, zero need for Nwaneri to drop deep too.
I know you’ll never admit it but the overly safe instructions given to the players is clearly hindering their natural abilities
I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t think that Pepe was as bad a player as he was painted.
Although nothing special, he played quite well at stages in his Arsenal career. I think he was a victim to his price tag to a degree, and the price tag wasn’t his fault after all. 🤷♂️
Derek
I agree with you but, unfortunately, the price tag is and will always be a factor for “performance measurement”. If he had cost, say, £25m I guess people would have thought about it that much.
It certainly wasn’t his fault as you say but the record books will show that he was financial disaster for Arsenal, not just the fee but the fact that the club paid his full wages when he was out on loan apparently. I saw an estimate that the total cost to Arsenal was over £100m and we’re talking about a fair number of years ago when he arrived.
Think game will change once Zubimendi and Odegaard come in. Gyokeres runs will be much noticed by either. An interesting second half to watch.
It’s now 3-1 to them. OOPS!🙄
We miss Thomas Partey seriously. Well he is a Villarreal player now.
Lols.
Missed, possibly, but I’m glad he’s not on Arsenal’s books now.
Five subs and give away another goal!
There are going to be some furious fans that Dowman is getting minutes twice in 2 weeks 🤣
It depends on what he does with them really.
Arsenal have done there money Gyokeres will not score 5 premier league goals let alone the 25-30 the deluded Arsenal fans think he will another season with no trophy Arteta has to go been backed to the hilt and failed to deliver
Same old same old except the only shining lights Dowman and Nwaneri.
Also lost the penalty shoot out!
W5nk preseason ,
Let’s hope this isn’t a copy of the upcoming season .
Hope the 200 mill goes a long way to getting us a trophy at last .
I went with family – inc four youngsters tonight as did many others who were bringing their kids . Some true diehard gooners but also lots of Arsenal tourists
Games like this are hard to gauge as the strongest 11 was not on show at any time. It reminded me of a second string playing at home to the likes of Barnet in the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup
I thought the defending was borderline criminal especially for the first goal which should have either been cleared or Raya should have got to it/claimed the ball. Really messy
From memory, the only player not to be subbed was Merino. The point being that there was no real cohesion. Initially it was entertaining but the reality is that a game with so many alterations is odd to watch.
Dowman was a live wire and did really well. It was all a bit flat tbh
Must do better
