Could Europa League be a blessing in disguise for Arsenal?

Arsenal fans are always banging on about how Arsene Wenger can never get his teams to win a trophy, but this conveniently forgets that the Gunners are in the FA Cup Final for the third time in four years, with two wins so far, and also two Community Shields as well.

But, they will say, the only competitions worth winning are the Premier League and the Champions League, in which we never seem to get past the round of 16 anyway. So maybe if we can go into the Europa League next season then we could have a real chance of winning it. Wenger has promised to try and win it (if he is still here of course). “I take every competition seriously and the only thing I did over the years was to use the League Cup to give chances to young players,” Le Prof stated.

“The Europa League, they decided that to give the chance for it to be taken seriously again because most of the big clubs didn’t play with strong teams so to make it more attractive we opened the door to quality.

“You still have to go through the qualifiers so that was a good incentive to get the best teams again and to be motivated.

“But if you look at the teams who won it recently it has always been teams who were kicked out of the group stage, but this year it could be Manchester United who started the competition.”

So surely if Arsenal are in it next season then maybe we should concentrate on the Thursday night competition to give us a real chance of a trophy, and also to gain re-entry into the Champions League?

  1. I think Arsenal would be better off with no European football for a year and just concentrate on the PL.

  2. Better just focus on Premier League, and play second string or giving academy players to prove themselves to get to the first team.

    1. we better focus on a new manager, AW is always welcome to my house i have a lot of respect for him as a intelligent human but not as a new age manager

  3. Of course one has to take it seriously, it is an European competition and if we win it, we have a chance to play for another trophy, that is, the Super Cup and it does more GOOD than harm to the team as a whole..

It gives psychological lift to the players, that they can at least win a trophy of that magnitude, secondly, they won’t probably be hindered by the Round of 16 elimination that has become a mini curse, thirdly, we can fill our trophy cabinet a little and lastly, a trophy is a trophy….

  4. whats the point if we are going to play the likes of spuds Manchester-U, M City who get kicked out of the CL we cannot beat them week and week out what makes us think we can beat them in EL
if i remember right the last time we were in EL final Galatasaray beat us with 9 man and we had an awesome team back then

  5. Wenger and his teams could not win us the europa. There
Are strong teams from Germany, France and Spain amongst other leagues that could still make us look decidedly average.

Wengers teams are soft: easily bullied , poor defensively and
Unbalanced throughout. The 2nd string competition would be no kinder than the UCL.

  6. After all these years we need a player like Viera

Commanding and gain respect from everyone

a player that encourage his team and provide motivation on the pitch

and yet able to scream and slap the non-performing ones

Players like Ramsey and Walcott would have hammered by Viera back in those days with those kind of performances

  7. Sam P. (Good call on Cesc btw), Ultimately if you are a winner you probably want to win everything you can win. Having said that I think Europa league might well be a curse and more of a hindrance than an opportunity.

Playing every Thursday night, sometimes in faraway places against teams no one has really heard of is a big burden on a PL campaign IMO and a big risk for injuries to a squad susceptible to injuries.

I don’t see Wenger using the Europa league to give some valuable game time and experience to his youngsters. If Wenger was still interested in giving his youngsters game time at the highest level we would have seen more of Maitland-Niles or other young players after the wheels came off for our senior players and our PL challenge. Yet we have not even seen Iwobi any longer. It is hard to believe Iwobi could not benefit from continued development.

If Man U win the Europa league, good for them. One has to respect a winner and Mourinho is one but to me the Europa League is still a Micky Mouse league. There are only two trophies in my world worth bragging about and that is the PL and CL, anything else is a consolation price, nice if you win it but hardly heart breaking if you don’t.

So I would prefer total focus on the PL and less risk of injuries in Kazakhstan.

  8. Im sorry is Wenger and the fans accepting europa league football wow. No ambition weak mentality we are an average team fact. Just wow

  9. I can’t see a problem with playing in the Europa Cup if we happen to finish 5th. Of course we would have to take it seriously, win it and you get into the Champions League. So you have to play on Thursdays, what’s the problem with that, they are all fit professionals who should be able to play twice a week. Wouldn’t it be ironic if we finished 4th but couldn’t go into Champions League because MU won the Europa….Mourinho would love that.
