Could Lucas Torreira be on his way out of Arsenal?

Reports out of Italy claim Lucas Torreira wants to leave Arsenal.

Lucas Torreira was one of the most exciting signings in the Premier League last season after joining Arsenal from Sampdoria.

His cameo against Manchester City at the beginning of last season made the Arsenal fans think they had found the midfielder they have all been waiting for.

Torreira made 50 appearances across competitions for the Gunners in his first season and most fans expected to see more of him in this campaign, but that hasn’t been the case.

This season Torreira has fallen down the pecking order and has started just three games. Unai Emery has preferred Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka in defensive midfield and Dani Ceballos in front of them for most of the club’s matches this season.

Now, a report on Tuttomercatoweb, since republished by the Mirror, is claiming that this situation has forced Torreira to look elsewhere. Apparently the Uruguayan believes that he will not develop his game if he doesn’t play more often and has decided to look for a move away.

The same report further claims that Torreira will sit down with the club soon to discuss his frustration at not playing more often and he could ask for a transfer away if they cannot offer him assurances.

It has to be stated that we are not talking about authoritative sites here, well, certainly not Tuttomercatoweb but they do include a video of Sky Sports Italia discussing Torreira and I assume it is this subject they are indeed talking about.

But regardless, it does raise the question, could the 28-year-old be on the verge of asking to leave?

I am not so sure, mainly because of the Granit Xhakaa situation. I suspect that this will see Torreira selected more often as a starter. If that is what happens, why would he ask for a transfer?

But at the same time, if he does not get the game time he desires, as an example Joe Willock being prefered, then it would not surprise me if he did ask to leave.

  1. Emery has ruined him. He’s a DM and Emery thinks he’s an AM……or against Bournemouth, a winger FFS.

  2. I wouldn’t like to see the boy go at all but i do think because of his size, he often gets overpowered in the middle. I do think we need a powerhouse who bosses rather than a little worker. Hes a good little footballer but he is always playing flat out and never within himself. Some players who come in the prem like Kante can get away with it but he is super quick and strong for his size, others find it tough going. Torreira is an honest type of footballer but to be truthful, i dont see him getting in any of the current top fours midfields. If he wants to go, for whatever reason, i think we would get a good fee and he a good team but if he stayed, i would be happy because he is a 100%er and he could still do a job as backup or cup games.

    1. How big is ngolo kante? He is simply working under a coach who doesn’t understand how to use players properly. He gamble with selection all the time. Torriera is good enough and he played some fantastic football as a DM when he was playing regularly. But Emery has destroyed his confidence by benching him for his favourites

      1. Kante is ball winner dm, similiar to makelele, meanwhile torriera more like destroyer dm aka gattuso.
It seem stamina is his big problem, he always had big drop performance in 2nd half time. That why hes a lot sub out by emery in 2nd half.

  3. He`s 23 years old not 28 years old……………or have I been asleep for 5 years and awoken to find out Emery is still manager …………….helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

  4. Emery needs to go. Under him almost all of our players have regressed. Team whole team is moving backwards. My heart aches and bleeds for my beloved Arsenal, how did we get here, that we cannot enjoy a single arsenal match for 90mins?

  5. If Emery remains as Arsenal’s manager and refuses to play the Uruguayan in his proper DM
position than IMHO it would be best for the young mans futboling future to move on to greener
pastures. I rate him a player, but if he is in fact having issues adjusting to life in North
London than maybe it is an opportune time to put out feelers for his services. I would venture
to guess that a handful of Siere A clubs would be interested.

I would gladly take two of Upamecano\Demiral and Sangare(Toulouse midfield monster) if it
meant both Xhaka, Torreria and EMERY were moved on in January.

  6. Well for me and I reckon 95% of supporters out there it should be Torreira/Guendozi as the main axis with one of AMN, ozil willock Ceballos. However, an option that might come to the fore soon is playing chambers or Luiz in the main axis. The option hasn’t really been explored due to the injuries to bellerin and holding.
But Emery is clinging to his job, I honestly cannot see anything but a drubbing against Leicester, if that happens, we could be 9pts off the top 4 and sitting 8th in the table with only 4 wins from 12,
it will be perfect timing to get a new manager in with the international break coming up. Allegri and Freddie would be my dream pairing. A winner with defensive nous and an arsenal man seemingly liked by the players and adored by the fans.

    My team to face leicester

    Leno
    Bellerin holding chambers tierny
    Torreira Luiz Guendozi
    Ozil
    Lacazette Aubameyang

    Martinez,kolasinac,Sokratis,nileswillock,pepe,martinelli,

That team can easily switch to Emerys 352,532 and his preferred diamond if need be. The bench also has a good balance.

  7. If he isn’t playing as a DM he should go. Like the guy as a DM, but him as an AM or CM is ridiculous, except to Emery that is.

Plays Torreria up high to press, but we never press! FFS, only Emery that mop

  8. Pray, why does everyone think we will be thrashed by Leicester? A 3-1 loss to Liverpool was hardly a thrashing, as many predicted before that match. There is a clear gap in quality between Leicester and Liverpool and I don’t believe we will be overun by the former.

It’s not as if we are totally bereft of any threat. In fact, they will disrespect us at their peril. Even with all the problems we have with our coach and his ways of setting up his team.

  9. I have to say this. Guendouzi still has alot to learn. He should be a sub at most. No serious team wins the league with Guendouzi being a starter in midfield. We should have gone for Thomas Partey in the summer. But for now, we need Emery to start Chambers in midfield. Stick to a first team. 433 midfield 3 of Chambers/AMN, Ozil and Torrera. Front 3 of Martinelli, Pepe and Aubameyang. Lacazette as an impact sub.

  10. if they are not playing Xhaka anymore then Torreira shoud stay, and let’s be real, he is way much better than Xhaka and should’ve been playing more often.

  11. Came on to this article to defend Torreira only to find that everybody gave the same opinion. Must say I agree with every post on this subject. What that tells me is the first person who should be out the door is Unai Emery.

  12. miused by our joke manager in all sorts of position besides his natural position. I don’t blame him and hopefully Emery is let go and Freddie does the common sense thing and plays him how is supposed to be played.

  13. To me Lucas is a key player and our best, and arguably only DM. Players want to leave, players won’t renew their contract etc. The damage this man does won’t be easily undone.

  14. With Emery at the helm, and it being visible to the world that he is destroying our club and team, it would be very surprising if we attracted any world class footballers to the club while he is there.

Furthermore, it’s all very good to show that we have lost only … games and are in reach of top 4, but conversely, how many points do we need to drop to be in the bottom half of the table?

Impending disaster if board does not make quick decisions.

  15. Torreira wants to return to Italy, because he and his family have not settled well into life in London (weather, language etc). As the saying goes “happy wife, happy life”.
Not playing enough doesn’t help the situation.
