Harry Redknapp has tipped Wayne Rooney to push for an exit from Manchester United, and believes he could still succeed at Chelsea or Arsenal.
The striker is England’s all-time top goalscorer, but has seemingly gone of the boil in recent years, and has now lost his regular slot in the United first-team.
Rooney has been utilised in a number of different positions at both club and international level over the past year, with contrasting results, and Redknapp now believes that will not settle in his current situation.
He said: “Wayne Rooney won’t take not playing at Manchester United for much longer. That situation is going to come to a head sooner rather than later if he doesn’t get back in the team.
“He would be a great signing for a couple of seasons and could have a major impact on a Premier League club. He could tip the balance for a top-four team if United were to let him go.
“I’d take Wayne at Arsenal or Chelsea and he has to play as a No 9 or 10 — midfield isn’t for him yet.”
Arsenal do not look shy in attacking options currently, with Alexis Sanchez slyly beginning to flourish in his newfound central role, and with Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Lucas Perez all hoping to play there part in the season also.
I’ve always been a fan of Rooney’s ability for England and United, but is no longer the player he was, and I think he is finally paying the price for becoming the first-team star so young, with the pressures that come with it.
Would Rooney be a welcome addition at the Emirates Stadium? Could he bring something different to our attacking options? Or is Harry simply losing the plot?
