Could Suarez be Arsenal’s secret weapon against Man City?

Arsenal have not had a very good record against Man City recently and most Gooners will be looking at this evening’s game with trepidation, but Unai Emery is trying to keep our players confident ahead of the trip to the Etihad. The one thing that Emery has been seriously lacking for his tactical formation is a winger, especially since Danny Welbeck suffered his season-ending injury, and there is now a very good chance we could see Denis Suarez take that position today.

Emery told us in his press conference that Suarez has already trained with the team, and went into detail about his plans for the Spaniard when asked if he could play. “We need every player to be OK and with the mentality to play on Sunday. We have maybe some injuries but we have other players who can play and help the team with their qualities, with the performances, with their condition. On Sunday, I am positive about the possibility of playing different players.

“I am thinking of all the players, and I will make my decision tomorrow, but if he starts I have confidence in him.

“He can play right, play left, inside like a 10 player, and I am going to use him in all the positions in the attacking third.

“He has character, big character, and he has the quality to play here. My relationship with him is… I usually did my relationship with the player first like a professional relationship, and second like a person. It is different when he is working. Now for me, the relationship with him is professional and sometimes can be personal.”

Inevitably, the boss was asked if Suarez’s arrival will make it even harder for Ozil to get into the team, and he replied: “It’s no change for him. [Suarez] is coming here because we have a lot of problems on the wing, we haven’t got players to play right or left – that is the reason.”

So now he is here, could we see a completely different formation to surprise Man City, with Suarez creating even more chances for our strikers. The question is; Who will he replace? Surely not Aubameyang?

  1. It could be a surprise for Man.City today as I felt all the big teams in Europe drop point this weekend… Suarez could be key… With his timely pass and Auba runs hopefully he is in top forms today… And let not forget the impact of Iwobi recently his decisive pass and hold up play for runs in… Suarez in the Game will reduce his workload and give us different dimensions… Dat would be headache for Man.City. My prefer Eleven would be

    Leno

    Mustaphi……… Kosh…… Monreal…….kolasinach

    Denis.S……Torriera….Guendozi……Iwobi

    Auba….. Laca

    1. Mustafi as an RB? To guard the flanks against City’s expensive wingers, mine would be:

      ……………………Leno
      Niles . Koscielny . Mustafi . Kolasinac
      …………………..Xhaka
      ……Torreira …………… Guendouzi
      ………………….Suarez
      ..Aubameyang ………….Lacazette

Hopefully Xhaka has improved his set-piece abilities

        1. Then it would be:

          ……………………Leno
          Jenkinson . Koscielny . Mustafi . Kolasinac
          ……………..………..Torreira
          …………Ramsey …………… Guendouzi
          ………………….…….Suarez
          …….Aubameyang ………….Lacazette

  2. Although harsh on him, I’d be happy to see Aubayemang on the bench with Lacazette in front of a three – Ramsey, Suarez and Iwobi or Kolasinac (if Koscielny is fit I’d rather see Monreal at left back for this one and think Kolasinac could do well as a hard working left wing). Torreira and Xhaka in front of a back four of Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny and Monreal.

  3. It’s a big ask from a new player playing agains probebly the best team on paper in Europe ATM, if he plays and creates width his done his job, best scenario a draw but I’m not holding my breath But I would like to be ridiculously wrong and party tonight

  4. And you know this how @gotaidea,from watching him few times for Barcelona under Enrique, please let him play first before we start criticizing him.

    1. I rated Suarez highly, but Emery’s plan on using him as a winger is not good because Suarez is not fast

Nonetheless, Emery surely knows better than me

  5. Who else has noticed the facial similarity between Suarez and Ramsey? Add a beard on Denis and they could be twins!

  6. Aubameyang has reached 25 goals quicker than Wrighty and Henry, new AFC record for PL. Imagine if we had got him all those years ago, I’d imagine that Henry’s club total wouldn’t have been so safe. The guy is electric, but we need others helping out more because it seems to be always on Auba and Laca’s shoulders.

    I’d imagine we will see…

Front three of Iwobi, Laca, Auba – Iwobi, Laca, Suarez – Iwobi, Auba, Suarez – Suarez, Laca, Mkhit – Suarez, Auba, Mkhit – Auba, Laca, Suarez …..etc etc etc. I also believe he will play sometimes further back.

    1. Aubameyang’s record. What makes it so impressive is the stats I was reading on Skysports. Arsenal have less shots on goal per game than in any previous season going back 12 or more seasons ago. It is not by a small margin, even Wengers worst season for shots on goal per game beats this season, just shots, not on target like. In the league we are in tenth position on shots per game, we were fifth position in the season before Emery arrived. There were other statistics too but this is the main one I remember. They then talked about Arsenal’s two clinical main strikers making up for the huge difference in the drop off. You need to see it yourself, if you have any doubts on Auba and Laca being clinical, you need to look it up.
