Could this be Arsenal’s new defensive line-up against Man City on the EPL opening day?

Having brought in Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno, and with Calgar Soyuncu on his way, it looks like Arsenal are going to have a completely revamped defence next season, especially when Sokratis Papastathopoulos arrives after the World Cup as well…

It is now as good as done, although the Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc refused to admit it to journalists he did agree that the deal is nearly finalised. “It tends to go there, that’s right,” he said. “But things are not completely finalised yet.”

“And I will not work with you now and talk about the rumour mill, which includes 27 new BVB players since the end of May.”

Although he has said that, he also revealed that Dortmund have already signed the replacement for Sokratis in Abdou Diallo (22) from Mainz so they are now free to announce the departure of Sokratis. This has been announced by Sky and other sources that the deal will be officially confirmed on July 1st.

This seems to be common knowledge and it is going to be very interesting to see how Emery lines up his defence on the opening day game against Champions Man City.

Could it be…..

Leno
Lichsteiner..Coyuncu…Sokratis..Monreal

with Torreira in front of them?

Exciting times ahead!

  1. its gonna be sweet when we find out our sweet Messiah torreira isn’t the player with think he is….smh…..

    1. GTFO with your negativity. we will happily wait for our players to impress while you hope he fails.
you are surely the remnants of the last dictatorship.

      1. Ackshay, how I was looking forward to your reply to Mikdemma, but it wasn’t forthcoming.
Here’s a statement for you to ponder over though…
Does it matter who signed what player when the season starts?
Any true gooner shouldn’t give a damn about the last dynasty / dictatorship because that’s history.

Again you make such a fool of yourself with this claim that fans want Emery to fail…. I ask you once again (this is the third time) to show me any gooner who has said that.
Looking forward to the FACTS behind the claim.

        1. “Does it matter who signed what player when the season starts?”

Need to ensure that the signings are the right ones AND that the manager will make use of that signing…

No point in signing a player that the manager doesn’t want and will end up being sent out on loan after the club fails to recoup the money invested. Example? Perez.

We need to remember the history so we can learn from it.
We need to remember that the board has been tight fisted for too many years, careful about jumping on bandwagons as the media doesn’t always get things right, remember the bad so we can make the most out of the good.

Just because I disagree about the history it doesn’t mean I am living in it, I remember it but I have hope for the future while living in the present. I am backing Emery fully, I hope he goes on and does better than Wenger in Wengers 1st 10 years… If he does then I will have a lot to sing about for the next decade and that is what I want.

        2. Fool? You must be blind just like there are wenger haters on his sites especially one who you reply to everytime there are wenger lovers here. The situation is reversed now there were fans who wanted arsenal to lose just to bash wenger or just rid of him now the negativity is from wenger lovers. Not everybody is like you who obviously loves wenger but also loves this new era.

      1. Just googled it. So use an emoji or even say it properly. I’m fed up with some of these acronyms, look it up!

    2. First and WORST reply on this thread, take a bow
for contributing absolutely nothing to this thread.

Torreria has been VERY impressive in this match,
reminds me of young Veratti battling in the center
      of the pitch.

      EXACTLY what Arsenal need

    3. did u see him vs russia? looks like he is energetic and passion…something arsenal urgently need after wenger has pladge the team his freeze way to play

    4. Common guy that guy is better than any one we have at Arsenal as of now. Did you see him play with Uruguay against Russia? Just like Ngolo Kante. Please stop the hate

  2. I think it will be Bellerin-sokratis-mustafi-kolasinac. emery high pressing will require fast or physical players so i think Lichsteiner and monreal will be used in rotation depending on the match. if we sit deep then switch the full-back to older more experience if we attack and press high faster and younger fb. Either way neither hulk and flash can afford to drop their work-rate since favouritism is gone.

    1. with ramsey as the box2box player, xhaka as the deep-lying mid and torreira as the dm in front

  3. Hey,

Although Calgar Soyuncu wants to come to Arsenal, don’t see that happening. price that his club team are asking for is too much for Arsenal to part with. Possibly Mustafi in place of Calgar Soyuncu on the opening day.

    Kish

    1. I don’t think he got the game time nor the confidence that goes with it. There was no reason to drop Kolasinac after the way he started. He never came back in as the same player because the boss had faith with Monreal whereas Kolasinac was still new to the team so an odd game isn’t gonna cut it. Wenger fluffed this one if you ask me, Kolasinac looked like he was about to earn a formidable reputation before he got cut down in his stride. One of Wenger’s soft spots was how he messed with the continuity of a back-line. We brought him in for a reason, Monreal was one of those reasons, maybe his age, but maybe not so cut and dry neither. Monreal is certainly or has certainly been one of our better performers over the years, his tenacity is brilliant, but he has some flaws, aerial ability being one of them.

      1. Breakonthrough, aren’t you answering your own query?
Quote… Monreal is certainly or has certainly been one of our better players…. so why did Wenger get it wrong?
Kolasinac should have been given the opportunity to be our CMD and that’s where Wenger got it wrong in my opinion.
When team’s are put forward on this site, I barely see Kolasinac mentioned, but I don’t think Emery will be getting rid of him just yet.

  4. No winger signed, so they would rely on their playmakers and wingbacks with 3-5-2:

    ………………………Cech
    ………Soyuncu . Sokratis . Mustafi
    …………………….Torreira
    Lichtsteiner . Ramsey . Xhaka . Monreal
    ……Lacazette ………….. Aubameyang

    Or 4-1-2-1-2:

    ……………………..Cech
    Lichtsteiner . Sokratis . Soyuncu . Monreal
    …………………….Torreira
    ……….Mkhitaryan ………… Xhaka
    …………………….Ramsey
    ………Lacazette …………… Aubameyang

      1. Yes, Mkhitaryan could be a false nine as well

Arsenal have enough players in almost all positions, except a good winger

I read the gossip that Lucas Perez would be given another chance. But if it doesn’t happen, I hope they would chase Bale, Bailey or Malcom

        1. I agree that Lucas Perez is a viable option as a wide forward/winger. Emery knows him welll from Spain, so his assessment of Perez will be interesting.

    1. i love that lineup bro.. but this man is part of the lazy player i don’t in that line up. MR CECH should stay away and give room for that younger man who is ready to walk for the club with his mind not with lazy mind

  5. Leno
    Lincsteiner Soyuncu Sokrates Kolasnac
    Torreira. Xhaka
    PEA. Ramsey. Mikhtarian
    Lacazette

Hope we get Gelson Martins to substitute Ramsey. I pray for some bustard dirty rich Chinese club to buy the lazy Ozil.

    1. Mkhitaryan and Nelson sucked as a left winger, but they are decent as right winger

Aubameyang played pretty well in the left wing

      1. I agree with your swap of Mhikataryan on the right and Aubameyang on the left.
Arsenal have plenty of games to play in season 2018/19, so it will be good to have options for formations and players in positions to suit different opposition and cover potential injuries.

  6. What a thrill it will be – should it happen – to have not one of WENGERS DISMAL NON DEFENDERS PLAYING. His only half decent defender at the club has been Monreal so I will be content if he stays for another year or so. But having the complete regular Wenger defence gone from our first choice defence(better still, from the club itself) will be a thrill. I mean both keepers, Bellerin, Mustafi, Kos(is finished anyway and wil never be more than a bit player, if that, when he is eventually fit) ,Merts thankfully retired from playing). Once the new players are installed plus Chambers – who , at last, looks like finally being a player and Mavropanos, who looks a special talent but will need time to develop and a coach who will ACTUALLY COACH DEFENCE, since he believes in HAVING a defence, which will be a novelty at long last, we will finally have real men , not boys protecting our goal. And before anyone says, let the past alone, I am still very bitter at how the previous incumbent FLATLY REFUSED TO EVEN TRY to bring in proper, tough and above all COACHED defenders. At my age I have not another wearisome full decade to waste watching posers in our “defence.” Hallelujah!

    1. Hallelujah indeed. I’m also bitter at all the unnecessary suffering that old selfish man has brought us over the last decade. I would take a loss at Europa final just to have him gone. Thank God is over.

      1. His having gone is the reason I am so excited . I had stopped coming to matches, after nearly sixty years, since OCTOBER 2016 having been a season ticket holder for 35 years, and will be now coming again this August and can’t wait.

        1. That is great news. Loyal fans like you who pay hard earned money deserve better. All arsenal fans deserve better than to being embarrassed every season by the big teams.

      2. International Arsenal, so you didn’t enjoy the suffering of three fa cup wins?
The eight years of top four finishes?
The eight years of CL qualifications?
That selfish old man took me, as a loyal Arsenal supporter, to seven Wembley visits, where fans in their hundreds of thousands watched history being made.
I have never ever wanted my club to lose a game, let alone a European final.
How anyone could consider themselves a supporter whilst wanting their club to lose a game is beyond me.
Just to clarify my position, I want our new manager to be the most successful in our history and win every title, cup. qualification place going.
Hallelujah the new manager has risen and praise indeed for our departed ex manager.

  7. Let’s wait and see what the line up will be. But to change the entire defence will be something to talk about later.

  8. I guess he would have been retained if he had won the Europa, blessing in disguise. this is the new arsenal # bring the epl on.

  9. everyone as dropped a lot wish i see as best comment so far, to me thanks unto GOD that the lazy coach as gone ,the next thing i need in that club is that all the lazy players should stay away and give rooms for better one….. just can wait to see man coach and his best crew to enter to the new season ……

  10. Emery is going to have to spend some time and effort to make these players forget the nonsense Arsene has made them believe.

    1. One key thing I hope Emery installs is man to man marking at corners and wide free kicks. I have had more than enough of marking space. Wenger never learned that space never heads a goal against us.

  11. Remember both Lech and Monreal are at the world cup so they won’t be able to play against Man City…

None of the aformentioned formations(in the comments section) had Ozil though….

      1. Lichsteiner

And monreal won’t be back by then,Spain plays either Russia or Uruguay and they should be able to go into the quater finals from there

  12. Why so much hate for Torreira. Guy hasn’t even signed yet and fans have started abusing him.

    1. Because it still is an assumption among some ‘fans’ that this is still Arsene’s Arsenal and therefore every signing is a flop because Arsene can’t manage a team.

They are basically stuck in a loop trying to preempt failure. Forgive them as they do not know Emery.

      1. SOUNDS THE EXACT REASON TO ME. As an attending supporter for nearly 60 years who stopped coming in Oct 2016, purely because I could not stand Wenger another minute, I am now going to start attending again in August. I think there are thousands like me who are now excited again about the new season but who would have continued to stay away were he not sacked when he was. In my view the club has been cleansed.

        1. Robin, there’s a reply from Jon that maybe you should take time to read.
Jon stopped going (as is his right) because of Wenger.
He therefore assumed it seems that it was Arsenes Arsenal, an accusation that you bandy about with regularity as a sign of hilarity. So are you including him in your description of losers who thought it was Arsenes Arsenal?

He also said that the club has been cleansed, but the same board and owner are still in the same position of power.
So, we are led to believe that this scourge of all things wrong at the club was so powerful he actually told Kronky how to run the club he bought? That this man was more powerful than the whole board, who consist of some of the most successful men in the country?

I also wonder about your views regarding the stuck in a loop and trying to preempt failure quote.
Why, if you are a REAL SUPPORTER of our club, would you possibly want it to fail?
There are some on here who have actually wanted that very thing to happen such as International Arsenal.
How do you appraise their attitude?

Forgive them as they do not know Emery?
I didn’t realise that you were the brain behind all things about Emery.
Here’s a fact that you probably won’t understand in your assumptions of other fans, it is NOT a manager one should support is it?
It should be Arsenal Football Club and that’s where YOU are stuck in a timewarp, still trying to score points against an ex manager instead of focusing on the future of the club.
I’m hoping Emery will be the most successful manager in our history. I want him so badly to succeed it’s unbelievable.
That’s because Arsenal is my club (the fact that I have supported them through thick and thin for over 60 years is irrelevant, the fact that I’ve stayed loyal is,).
So next time you dismiss a section of supporters who have different opinions to you, please remember that their opinions are just as valid as yours.

          1. Everyone here has a valid opinion that is for sure. But facts have proven that some opinions are more true than others.

Arsenal declined terribly under Wenger in the last 5-6 years ( I am only counting the years where we had money not the debt paying years as he has an excuse for those years although not as valid as some people think)

We used to fight to win and end up in the top four, then we started fighting for the top four and making it to the top four, then we started fighting for the top four and not making it to the top four anymore. If that is not the definition of decline I don’t know what ie.

A few FA valiantly won FA cups were just a new coat of paint on a crumbling house.

He left Arsenal with one of the worst defenses we have ever had. No defense minded decent midfielder, no wingers, and a 36 year old GK. This is not the team of a man who did his job well in the last few years of his reign.

If he was so good where are the real offers? Where is Real? PSG? Where are the teams that he thinks he is entitled yes entitled to manage. No one came calling. At best he might get the France job if they suck in this WC.

He has been living of his past success for way too freaking long. We were a great team under him, we played beautiful football, hell we were invincible. But that was over a decade ago.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but not to their own facts.

  13. Even if we sign Kroos, Ronaldo or Messi, we will still have some people who’ll doubt their qualities, it’s human nature.

  14. Can we stop talking about Wenger and have some real talks of how arsenal can get back to the top again. Have you guys even looked at our opening fixtures yet??!

    1. Almost all City’s first team squad are at the world cup and won’t return for the match so I don’t think winning the match should be too difficult, and we also play at home….

Playing Chelsea shouldn’t be hard either,we’re more settled than them
