Danny Welbeck will not allow Arsenal reunion go to his head

On Sunday Danny Welbeck will play against former club Arsenal for the first time since leaving the Emirates and while he understands the significance of the game he will not allow it to go to his head and will be treating the occasion like any other game.

The 28-year-old was released by the Gunners at the end of last season following a frustrating time with injuries and is obviously keen to prove his worth once again, he has age on his side and when fit and on form is a deadly striker as he showed on multiple occasions for Arsenal.

But it never really did work out for him at Arsenal, he was never an automatic first choice and it was in everyone’s best interests when he was released.

Speaking about the upcoming game against his former club, Welbeck was circumspect with his comments, not wanting to rile up his former teammates with any sort of predictions or warnings.

Welbeck told watfordfc.com: “I’ve played against former clubs before, like Manchester United when I was at Arsenal, and now I’m going to be coming up against Arsenal for the first time since I left.

“At the end of the day it’s another game – 11 players on a football pitch against another 11 players – so I’m going to give my best and try to win.

“Paul McGuinness, my youth team manager at United, would always say ‘play the game, not the occasion’ and that’s something that’s always stuck with me.

“So I’m not going to allow the occasion to get into my head.

“Someone said the other day that maybe the script is written for me to score my first Watford goal against Arsenal, but the script writers aren’t playing the game so I’m just going to give my best and try to win the game for Watford.”

Personally, I wish Welbeck all the best and hope he does well for Watford, he was an honest hard working player but I just hope that it is not against us that he finds his scoring boots and has an off day.
