Dan's EPL Predictions

Dan’s EPL Predictions Week 5: Man City to go top as Arsenal drop points at Brighton?

Another Premier League weekend is here, with plenty at stake before the international break.

Arsenal face another tricky away assignment at Brighton, while Chelsea travel to Brentford and Manchester City host Sunderland. At the other end of the table, Coventry are still searching for their first point of the season.

Here are my predictions for all ten games.

Brentford 2-2 Chelsea

In the summer it looked like Alonso was turning Chelsea into the Newcastle of the mid-nineties.

A team who want to entertain and win 4-3 every week.

The reality is, though, the goals Hull scored at Stamford Bridge were basic mistakes from the Blues’ defence.

That’s taking nothing away from the Tigers, but as long as that’s the level of defending, it will always undermine their chances of putting a winning sequence together.

Spurs 1-0 Aston Villa

Forget spending all that money to challenge for Europe this season; Spurs would be happy if they could reach the international break with a goal in the Premiership.

There were ironic cheers from the home crowd when they finally managed a shot on target last Saturday.

That’s what’s concerning about this goal drought. It’s not players being unlucky. In the final third, they are struggling to create chances.

I keep thinking of the law of averages: the ball has to hit someone’s backside and go in eventually.

Villa are not much more confident, so the first goal this weekend could be vital.

Brighton 1-1 Arsenal

Most Gooners will fondly remember this game from last season’s title run-in.

It was the evening that, as we were hanging on at the Amex, we learnt that at the same time Man City were dropping points.

In many ways that one night summed up the Champions. We were not great but restricted the Seagulls to a few shots on target.

While Fabian Hurzeler later apologised, you know he wasn’t impressed with Mikel Arteta’s tactics, and you sense he will be extra motivated to get a result on Saturday.

He might feel he is due some luck in this fixture.

At least, though, we are getting some tricky away games out of the way early.

Everton 1-1 Ipswich

I seem to say this every season about the Toffees. They struggle in this type of game where they are expected to win and are more comfortable in the role of the underdog.

David Moyes hasn’t been shy in saying he’s looking on the market for free agents, so that tells you he feels he was let down in the last transfer window.

Newcastle 2-1 Hull

The honeymoon period might be over for Matthias Jaissle after his young squad on Monday produced the kind of performance the Toon Army had been fearing.

By now you would have learnt not to write Hull off, but it’s clear Newcastle have a manager with a huge personality.

He couldn’t hide his anger at Elland Road, so he will demand a reaction.

We will learn a lot about his players’ character this weekend.

Forest 1-1 Coventry

Coventry are the only team in the English football league without a point yet this season.

The longer that goes on, the harder it is for Frank Lampard to maintain confidence in his squad.

It doesn’t help that the other two promoted clubs are already 8 and 6 points ahead.

I’m not saying the manager would be under any pressure if he loses at the City Ground, but having something to build on would avoid a headache during the international break.

Cherries 2-2 Liverpool

This week will be the Cherries’ first-ever attempt at juggling European football with the domestic schedule, yet it’s worth the struggle if it means an adventure in the Europa League.

There is irony that Iraola is the manager waiting for Bournemouth when they return from Spain.

He can relate to Marco Rose struggling to turn draws into wins.

The Spaniard himself drew 18 games in the League last season, easily the most of anyone in the division.

So a draw on the South Coast feels fitting.

Leeds 3-1 Palace

As I write this, it’s not clear if Calvert-Lewin will be named in England’s latest squad on Friday.

Ivan Toney was picked ahead of him to go to the World Cup, so it’s not clear what Thomas Tuchel thinks of the striker.

Palace might be one of the few clubs grateful for the international break.

Steve Parish might have to get involved. The owner has three weeks to talk Mateta and Sarr into playing for the Eagles again.

Even if it’s only till January, it could be the difference between a relegation fight and not.

Man City 3-0 Sunderland

Yes, City were fortunate with their winning goal in the Manchester Derby, but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that, with ten men, they controlled the game.

Most teams who go down to 10 men at Old Trafford would go through the motions; City controlled the game.

It was such a pivotal performance, though; whoever maybe didn’t trust Maresca to bring the title back to the Etihad might now have more belief.

Winning in that manner is only going to do one thing for their confidence.

If Arsenal drop points the day before, the incentive is there for them on Sunday.

Fulham 2-2 Man United

While Pro Ref have apologised for their error of judgement in allowing Haaland’s goal to stand in the Manchester Derby, it would be wrong if Michael Carrick spent this week thinking his team were unlucky (he won’t).

The reality is United played at Old Trafford with a man advantage for over 70 minutes yet seemed to lack imagination in the final third.

That simply can’t happen against 10 men at the Theatre Of The Dreams.

The manner of the defeat means failure to win at the Cottage will make the international break a long three weeks for the manager.

  2. I’m with Dan. The next ten games for us and City is far far harder for Arsenal, including going to Man City. But we all knew this, we all knew Arsenals opening was tough, Man City and Liverpool away. If City beat us, we could be six or seven points behind them. But then over winter and run in, our greater squad depth and fixtures, not leaving London for a couple of months, allows us to chase City down.

Obviously there will be wailing and gnashing teeth on JA – being 7 points behind City, but everyone’s got to complete their fixtures, and longer season goes on, sides will greater squad depth can gain advantage from it. How do we know this. It’s only what Man City have been doing to everyone else the last ten years.

I think this is too much opium but Arteta might
    1. Break the record for most points
    2. First one to win us the UCL
    3. Go a season unbeaten.

  39. Happy for Gunnerstew. Well done Dan for rectifying it soon.
VAR is even needed at JA.
Hints there might be ‘human’ flaws in computations

  40. DEREK,
Many thanks indeed. I’m 3rd. Will you give me your viewpoints if I communicate to you my Saturday predictions before posting them?

    1. Amba,

Actually You’re in a three-way tie in second place currently. My apologies’ for getting you’re initial place wrong. But I’ve bettered even you’re questioning of you’re position. 😂👍

      1. DEREK,
You may not know the intricacies of this game as you’re not an active participant. But positions are liable to change each week due to the imbalanced weighting attached to results and scores. Last week I got only 3 correct results. But a certain Ohis got 6 correct results. But it was me who surpassed him. Flaws with the system?

        1. no mate
it’s harder to get a correct scoreline then result
if you went into a bookies today and put 10 pounds on Man City to beat Sunderland you would make 50 p , if you got the scoreline say 3-0 correct you would make say 50 pound
why do you think that is ?

        2. Amba,

I don’t know what the scoring system is regards points. But I would assume that you may have got 3 correct scores and Ohis got 6. But maybe you got you’re 3 we’re correct score lines to.

Wouldn’t that make a difference. As I say, I don’t know what the scoring system is. So my apologies’ if I’m wrong.

          1. I got 3 correct results with the two being exact scores. So I collected 7 pts. Hope DEREK you teach others hereafter. I tried to immerse you in this game by inviting you comment on my predictions but maybe you didn’t see my post. 2 pts is enough for exact score which I believe is a product of guess estimate not mental

    2. Amba,

I’m confused, how will you communicate you’re predictions to me before posting them?. 🤷‍♂️

      1. DEREK,
With your consent I hope I can get your email from JA or mine. I don’t know if there’s another way. I even can do it candidly on this page

        1. DEREK,
You may know for 3 longer weeks there won’t be EPL games till Oct first week. I want to be in the leading pack in this period so this week’s predictions are most vital

        2. Amba,

You can always put it in an unrelated post on another subject.

Just another question, why do you want to hide it anyway. You don’t need to be candid about it.

I’ll happily give you my viewpoints when I actually see you’re predictions on this page anyway if You’d like. 👍

            1. Amba,

Don’t be fooled, Michelle is just biding her time. She’s not the current Champion for no reason. 😂👍

  41. In his presentation to Arsenal board, Arteta did heavily emphasize dominance and taking the club to a different dimension of global competitiveness in his set of final phases.

    Brentford 2 – 1 Chelsea
    Spuds 2 – 1 Villa
    Brighton 1 – 2 Arsenal
    Everton 2 – 1 Ipswich
    Newcastle 2 – 1 Hull
    Forest 2- 1 Coventry
    Boumeounth 1 – 2 Liverpool
    Leeds 2 – 1 Palace
    Man City 2 – 1 Sunderland
    Fulham 2 – 1 Man U

        1. DEREK,
Don’t get surprised by my five 2-0s. There’s a poster who predicted 2-1 for all 10 games. Yes sometimes we’ve to see this fun game this way

  42. In today’s presser Arteta faced 30 questions. Against Chelsea it was 44. He was optimistic the absentees excepting Saliba would be included in the squad. When shall he sign the extension? This team may collapse without him like the current Utd so the no. 1 priority is to ensure his stay. Do it asap the Kroenkes!

  43. Brentford 1:2 Chelsea.Squrs 1:2 Villa.Brighton 1:2 Arsenal.Everton 2:0 Ipswich.Newcastle 1:1 Hull.Forrest 2:0 Coventry.Bournemouth 1:1 Liverpool.Leeds 2:1 Palace.Mancity 2:1 Sunderland.Fulham 1:2 Man utd.

  44. Is it I don’t know how to say it? To predict on this JA a loss of Arsenal v Brighton? Head v Heart what some are accustomed to calling it

    1. Spurs 0 – 0 Aston Villa
      Brighton 0 – 2 Arsenal
      Everton 2 – 2 Ipswich
      Newcastle 2 – 2 Hull City
      N. Forest 3 – 0 Coventry

  45. missed d Chelsea game

    Spurs 1-1 Aston Villa
    Brighton 1-2 Arsenal
    Everton 2-0 Ipswich
    Newcastle 2-1 Hull
    Forest 2-1 Coventry
    Cherries 2-2 Liverpool
    Leeds 2-1 Palace
    Man City 3-0 Sunderland
    Fulham 1-1 Man United

  46. Unbeaten has once happened in the EPL doesn’t preclude happening it again. We’re seeing it’s happening frequently in other leagues. Don’t give it a closed file treatment lol.
Yeah same group of players but persistent injuries drowned it last season so with LUCK there’s a chance for the unbeaten to happen this season. We’ve to see the squad was bolstered further. We could have lost games if the current injuries to Mosquera Hincapie White Saliba and Timber happened last term

    1. it happening in other nations has nothing to do with England
our attack for example is not good enough to do what only one team in the Prem has done

you say unlucky ….they lost wasn’t it 5 Prem games ?

what an insult to the Invincibles to essentially say you can have a high chance just because

    2. Amba,

It could happen you say, yes it can. But the invincible’s actually did it.

And this current Arsenal side may have the potential to do something similar, but having the potential to do it is one thing, but to actually do it is another. 👍

      1. we lost 5 games last season lol
that’s not even close to having the potential to go unbeaten
it’s like when we got to xmas and and peeps started the how do you know we can’t win the quadruple
        it’s called the eyes test

        1. Dan,

While I hear what you’re saying, it doesn’t mean that its not potential. Whether they get near or not doesn’t change the fact they have the potential.

Doing it is another thing of course. And a big ask if we’re honest.

          1. Depends if you mean potential as factually
As in factually yes Hull can go unbeaten but reality is they won’t

Our attack is not good enough to reach those levels
I think it’s a slap in the face to the Invincibles to every year just name teams randomly who can do it after what …4 games ?

  47. We all love the Invincibles but more Invincibles are in the making esp if both domestic and European titles are won this season. There is that possibility

    1. there is a possibility as in it can factually happen just like possibly Brentford , Leeds , Hull or Man City can do it
but there is nothing to say there is a high chance outside of you wanting it to happen

      1. Amex put an end to our debate emphatically just in the 5th week. There are however other top targets which the Invincible couldn’t achieve

        1. It was obvious we wouldn’t get close
          So disrespectful to the Invincibles
Think you need to understand how difficult it is

    1. Morning Amba,

Here’s my take on you’re first 5 predictions, as you requested. As you know I don’t play in this, but I’ll give you my opinion for what it’s worth.

You’ve gone for 2-0 wins in all the games, that is highly unlikely in my opinion. Point could be lost there, but I hope for you’re sake there not.

By the way, this is just my opinion. Don’t come and sue me if I’m wrong😂. Remember, you asked me for my opinion. I didn’t say I’d be right. 🤣👍

      1. DEREK,
As agreed in the morning I posted my tentative predictions under another topic seeking your remarks but unfortunately you didn’t see it.
In this game you’ve to gamble sometimes. Boom or bust as it’s an enjoyable fun game. Let’s see it what happens. Last week I was 0 from the first 5 games but in the 2nd half I recovered to go upwards to 3rd

        1. Amba,

Sadly my thought’s on you’re 2-0 predictions were correct. I hope for you’re sake that one of you’re 2-0 predictions come true rather than two for obvious reasons. 😉

          1. DEREK,
Even so the 2-0s gave me 3 good pts. Fine! VAR controversially cancelled Everton’s 2nd goal and denied me in the process 2 more points.

              1. DEREK,
I predicted Villa, Everton and Newcastle to win and got them CORRECT. So 1 point each ×3=3 total points.
What do you make of my today’s predictions?

                1. Amba,

My apologies, I misunderstood. As for you’re predictions today, I only hope you’re right on one of you’re 2-0 predictions for obvious reasons. 👍

                    1. Amba,

You predicted a 2-0 win for City. I didn’t want that one to be right, for obvious reasons.👍

  48. Late entry! I missed the Brentford v Chelsea prediction but guessing a lot of you got that one wrong?
    Spurs 0-0 Aston Villa
    Brighton 2-2 Arsenal
    Everton 1-1 Ipswich
    Newcastle 1-2 Hull
    Forest 1-0 Coventry
    Cherries 2-2 Liverpool
    Leeds 2-0 Palace
    Man City 1-1 Sunderland
    Fulham 1-1 Man United

    1. Michelle,
Most of us failed intentionally waiting for you. You have effectively missed nothing.
If I had known Pedro was not playing maybe?
      Good luck!

  49. This week we didn’t see a 2-0 game thanks to VAR; there will be today.
    Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool.
    Leeds 3-1 Palace.
    Man City 2-0 Sunderland.
    Fulham 0-2 Man Utd.

  50. This week traditionally called top teams are conceding 3 or more goals. Chelsea 3, Spurs 3, Arsenal 3 and City now shipping in 3 goals. Bad act to copy

      1. Hopefully in the next fixture v Leeds as we did it last term, DEREK. Renaissance of Gyokeres it might be

      1. Yes traditionally considered one of the big six. Form is temporary. A few years back they were UCL finalists when we struggled to qualify. Their state of fhe art stadium

  51. HT: Atletico 0-0 Real Madrid. Romero’s brutal foul on Bellingham was 1000 times clear RED but the ref only gave yellow. ……. Argentina vs England
