David Luiz has agreed a two-year extension with Arsenal, says Benfica boss

Well, there are very few Arsenal fans would have seen this coming after David Luiz had made it clear that he had been in contact with Benfica about finishing his career in Portugal, but it has now been revealed by the Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira says Luiz will in fact sign a two-year deal with the Gunners.

‘I spoke to him yesterday, we have a father-son relationship,’ Vieira told Benfica TV (reported by the Metro). ‘He was in the car with his agent and will renew with Arsenal for two years. ‘David Luiz loves Benfica, but he is 33 years old and has to earn money.

‘His salary in England is unthinkable for Benfica to pay. In England he earns €7million or €8million a year.

‘If David Luiz comes and says “I want to come back”, if he is 35 years old and in perfect condition, of course we would welcome him.

‘But now, if he came, it would only be for €1million, and as a father I would say no. “David, you’re not coming, don’t be crazy, make more money!”

‘It may be that it becomes a case like Rui Costa, who called me one day and said it was time to return, for me to make a contract, offer a salary, which he signed. If David Luiz does the same, he can return.’

I actually think this will be a shock to some Arsenal fans, considering how many defenders we have at the club, plus the arrival of William Saliba and possibly Pablo Mari as well. One thing is sure, we are unlikely to be spoilt for choice next season!

What do you think of that?

  1. Arsenal fans may not see this coming but i know David Luiz ll sign new contract with arsenal maybe two or one year deal with the Gunners.

  2. SOUNDS LIKE GAZIDIS IS STILL IN CHARGE. CERTAINLY GOT HIS DISASTROUS STAMP ON THIS, ASSUMING ITS TRUE. HOPE NOT!

    1. It’s not all doomand gloom as you say. The mistake was already done when we signed him for just one year for 8 million. Now this is more like a corrective move to get something out of him in the next 6 months or so when we gonna sell him. It’s best in my opinion for the short while.it’s pure business

  3. OMG! with his wages we could get any decent defender from the lower league! Disappointed with those in charge of running AFC.Next what? A two year extension for Ozil with an increment in wages?Beginning of the end of our status as an elite EPL club. Get ready for the “Top 17 trophy”. Big shout out to Mikel for vouching for Luiz. Your days as numbered as AFC coach brother!

    1. At the moment this is all conjecture and we have no idea of how much the club can do in the transfer window. I would hope that a one year extension is the maximum and certainly not on the salary that he has been enjoying for the last 12 months.

    2. Reports have it that he took a pay cut to stay, that’s not a bad thing. On his abilities he’s better than all our CBs atm so why not sell the other clowns and let him stay and mentor the likes of saliba and the young lads?

  4. Kos was on 100 grand a week and we sold him for 6 million.
We bought Luiz to for 8million and he’s on 120 grand a week.
The 6 million agent fees story is 🐂💩.
