Do Arsenal really need or want Chelsea’s Loftus-Cheek?

There are many rumours linking Arsenal with a summer move for the Chelsea and England defender Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but I am at a loss to understand the reasoning behind it. This is what the Sun is reporting today….

Arsenal are looking at a shock move for Chelsea ace Ruben Loftus-Cheek in January.

Loftus-Cheek had a promising summer with England at the World Cup, but has since lost all his first-team momentum.

And the Gunners are looking at ways to land the Three Lions ace, according to ESPN.

It is understood Arsenal boss Unai Emery would like Loftus-Cheek in a permanent swoop as he is a big fan of his talents.

Chelsea are only thought to be willing to let him leaving the club on a six-month loan and evaluate his position next year.

The fact is that the 22 year-old midfielder played in more games for England at the World Cup (4) than he has for Chelsea this season (2), so he would be looking to move away to get some more first-team experience. Last season he went on a very successful loan at Crystal Palace and performed magnificently, which earned him the England call-up, and it may be more beneficial to him to return there than come to Arsenal.

How can we guarantee him any playing time when we already have Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Maitland-Niles, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey competing for places, not to mention Mo Elneny who can hardly get a game himself.

No this rumour makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever!

  1. gotanidea says:

He has good ball control and he is very tall, but no other prominent skills as a midfielder

Because of his stature, he could be a good false nine or a target man

I agree that the rumor makes no sense, because Arsenal already have plenty of midfielders and they need other types of players

    1. Jonny says:

We don’t need a false nine or target man! Story probably made up by his agent to bolster his hand in negotiations with Chelsea. Utterly fake news!

    2. Th14 says:

Nicholas Pepe that’s the guy we should sign

  2. Kenny Rolfe says:

Why do we need him, 22 years of age, can’t get in the Chelsea side, their going to demand an astronomical fee and as far as representing England, that’s no credentials to be proud of, anyone can get in that side. What’s this? Help out Chelsea Week

    1. Sue says:

Did you see Kim Little is out for 10 weeks Kenny? Fractured her leg

      1. Kenny Rolfe says:

Yeah, I did Sue Fractured Tibia. terrible deliberate tackle by the Chelsea player, because they were getting hammered.

        1. ozziegunner says:

What action did the referee or officials take?

          1. Kenny Rolfe says:

Yellow card only OG, commentator couldn’t believe it, he thought definite red.

    2. Admin says:

Ok England got to semi finals of world cup. Anyone can get in the team?

      1. Kenny Rolfe says:

Hold on Admin, who’d they beat, Tunisia, Panama and Columbia. The easier draw in the history of the World Cup. First decent side they played, they got beat.

        1. Miles says:

Is Columbia not a decent side?

  3. Ian Ures Boots says:

It is only a rumour made up by nobodies to generate website hits.
Mind you I would rather have him than Mezut but that’s just my opinion.
Mind you I would rather have Donald Duck than Mezut, he does give a lot of fowls away though does Donald.

    1. Sue says:

Maybe you need to go & see a quack

      1. ozziegunner says:

    2. Kenny Rolfe says:

I, I, Ian, Ian Ure (He’s song) £62,500 from Dundee in the early sixties. A classy Centre Half who in one game ( Swindon ’68 LCFinal) ruined his legacy.

  4. Midkemma says:

This rumor came up as a Ramsey replacement.
If this was to come true then it could very well be as a Ramsey replacement, removing one CM from the list in the article.

I also wonder about the future of players like Elneny, he isn’t getting loads of gametime and he is being overtaken… If we did lose Elneny and Ramsey then bringing in one player could be ideal to ensure we do not go down to too few.

I think this is just an option the Arsenal scouts have, I do believe that our scouts have options for every pos incase we need to target a specific role in the next transfer window… or if something unplanned happened. Sven doesn’t seem like the guy to leave things to chance, he looks like a guy who works hard and enjoys the fruits of his hard work.

  5. jon fox says:

Well to me it makes perfect sense. He is better than most of our midfielders

  6. Phil says:

Let Ramsey go to Chelski and we take Loftus-Cheek.Surely that’s a no brainier. We get a promising talent and they get an overrated player to sit next to Giroud on the bench.

    1. ozziegunner says:

      1. Kenny Rolfe says:

Rather do a swap for Cesc, he’ll be available

        1. Phil says:

Good shout Kenny-Straight swap and we will get the better deal for sure.Cesc in for Xhaka improves us dramatically.

          1. Kenny Rolfe says:

Phil, are you going to Ukraine and have you worked out a route.

  7. iffybright says:

Loftus Cheek Close control, incredible strength and his Footwork is far better than any of our players presently…..
Only Iwobi is close to those qualities at Arsenal……

    Emery please get him…….
Loftus Cheek is not a sideways passer….
    He is direct
With him on the pitch, we going to be more dangerous…..
    Chances upon chances will flow….
Even our strikers will get better when played at the front of skillful pacy and powerful football players……

And not Chickens like Ramsey and Ozil……
    Specialist sideways passers

    1. Admin says:

So where would you put him in our list of midfielder s?

      1. iffybright says:

Far better than all our attacking midfielders………
I want to see Loftus starting alongside Iwobi and Milkitaryn..

Guendouzi and Torreira dictating the play from deep midfield……….

Maitland Niles is also a very good Baller……

I don’t want to see Xhaka Ozil and Ramsey in that Team again as from January……

Ozil doesn’t work his socks off for the team……..
He is just a total liability
        A luxury player……..

Arsenal doesn’t need a luxury player
We need hardworking and passionate players

        1. Goonerboi says:

Xhaka has been playing better than jorginho since our winning run began, so no RLC is not going to get into our starting 11. I don’t see how he’s better than AMN tbh. Same type of player AMN is just more versatile. Good elneny replace but not nearly enough to play in front of torreira l, xhaka and probs Ramsey tbh. Ozil is a different player altogether

        2. jon fox says:

Spot on with the whole of your post!

  8. Break-on-through says:

No!!! I wouldn’t swap Ramsey with him and I’d prefer we spent some decent money and made an upgrade to the side rather than sticking with Torriera and Xhaka by bringing in a squad option who may come good one day.

That’s how we used to do business, I’d want to see someone come in and rival fans start talking about how we sorted the holding position and now they’ve sorted the guy next to him Before saying ..Arsenal will be a better side now that they’re looking at each position carefully. At the very least I’d want us to aim this way. Not every signing will work out. However, bringing in Loftos Cheek smacks of lack of ambition!!!

  9. kenya01 Ars fan says:

wow admin loftus cheek a defender well not in my team.????

  10. Innit says:

anybody who will improve us will be good
We need to upgrade a few midfielders and defenders

I reckon we are fine at GK, LB, DM, Striker

This is the first season of my life that I’ve said we are fine with defensive midfielders
    Think about that.
