Does Arsenal have the squad depth to play every three days?

The Premier League is about to return and the timetable that has been released could see each team play around three games per week before the season ends.

This fixture list has been prepared with this sort of congestion because the Premier League wants the campaign to finish on time for a minor season break to come before next season which should start around September.

The Bundesliga has resumed with a similarly close scheduling of games and we have seen teams changing much of their lineups for consecutive games.

In this kind of situation, a team that has deep squad depth should have an advantage and that has prompted me to wonder if Arsenal has the squad depth to manage so many games in such a short period of time.

The Gunners will look to end this campaign by qualifying for European competition next season. However, so many other teams also have the same ambition.

Mikel Arteta has recently promoted two players from the club’s academy to the first team and that seems to show that we lack the depth that he needs for the rest of the season.

A quick look at Arsenal’s first-team squad shows that the Gunners have three goalkeepers, six centre backs, four full-backs, seven midfielders, and seven forwards.

Calum Chambers is the only player who would be unavailable at the restart if no player gets a fresh injury.

A squad of 23 fit players is good enough for a long season that is well spaced, however, for a condensed season like the one we face when football returns, it seems that we would have to rely on the fitness of our key players to keep us going, injury setbacks might affect us badly.

  1. “Does Arsenal have the squad depth to play every three days?” Well, we will manage to start and finish with eleven players , barring a sending off.

  2. Jon Fox I admire your great love for humanity, but I am sorry, the sad truth is the government does not care much for humanity and the they have the final say.

So we all just have to adapt and sail through the storm and accept whatever they have set it to be then play your part for your own life.

I love humanity and wouldn’t want good humans to die unnaturally but I will enjoy a part of life I love if the opportunity arises by watching my club games. I am sure you will do the same too.

  3. We have the squad depth per head count to play through but are the players good enough.

To me this is our best 11 players available.

    Aubameyang,

    Lacazette,

    Martinelli, Ceballos, Torreira, Saka,

    Tierney, Mari, Luiz, Bellerin,

    Leno.

    4-4-1-1.

    TEAM B…

    Nketiah,

    Nelson, Ozil, Pepe,

    Xhaka, Guendouzi,

    Kolasinac, Mustafi, Sokratis, Cedric,

    Martinez.

    4-2-3-1

Subs – Willock, Holding, A Niles.

  4. We’ll be fine!!

Just watched Sky Retro… our 0-0 against the Mancs back in 2003…
Not heard Old Trafford as loud as that in ages! Our away support was superb, as always!
Van Nistelrooy, that cheating sod! Their fans even had the audacity to chant ‘same old Arsenal, always cheating’ 😳
Then the moment of the penalty…. the noise when the ball crashed against the bar, didn’t ya just love it?! Almost as much as Keown’s reaction 👌 He was 37 back then… and an instant legend in my eyes after that!! Absolutely loved it!! Those were the days, hey?!!

    1. What about the disgraceful decision to give the penalty Sue. Just shows you that things don’t change. Been cheating us for years. The following year Mike Riley gave Van Nistelroy 11 penalty’s in 11 games. My first question would be “why was Riley refereeing 11 Manchester United games in the first place in a season of 38 games” when there was 20 referees on the Premier League list.

      1. Too right, Kenny… that was 17 years ago, how right you are – they don’t change!!
        11 penalties?! Wow 😳
It’s the same now isn’t it? You think how many there are now? In the 20s…and look how many are done by the select few!!

  5. Exactly Top gunner.

We are injury prone for years, will be logically more at risk but do have players to make it for 10 games.

Won’t be first time we play twice a week for a month or so…. Risk is same for every team tho.

Question should be, do we have team to finish higher than 7th place?

Yes, but if we keep playing wrong players in middle and central defense, we won’t but finish between 8th & 12th place.

We became a team with no title and any ambition, no target. Everyone fights either for titles, Europe football, fight to remain in EPL or relegation.

We have managed to move from relegation spot we were closer to than anything few games ago and most season….

  6. Watching Dortmund… Sancho makes it 2-0 and takes his shirt off to reveal a message ‘Justice for George Floyd’ 👏👏👏

    1. Thx Sue. I had forgot Dortmund game.

Racism should be punished as a criminal offense, jail time. Monkeys won’t attend stadiums nor so many free racism acts.

      1. Looking at this grown man call his momie as his last word has put the world in a serious reality check. All honors to Sancho for this dedication.

    2. Sue, Yes , brilliant to see him do that. Hope the little people who make the rules do not punish him for being a bigger man they they are!

  7. Why should we be different from any other team apart from the fact we have an extra game to fit in plus the proposed game cup games- although I’m not sure when they are pencilled in

  8. Mavropanos went off injured at half time yesterday…. been so unlucky.. quite possibly another sick note..

  9. 20,000 fans could be allowed to attend the FA Cup final on August 1……only if the covid infection rate is below 0.5 by the time it takes place..
