Does Arteta contract mean Arsenal won’t sign a new DM?

Arsenal fans have been hoping for a player to solve the age old defensive midfield problem for some years now, but the Gunners were in danger of taking a backward step rather than sorting it out, according to a Metro report.

The Spanish midfielder and club captain Mikel Arteta may not be every Arsenal fans’ idea of the right player for the job, but when you consider the options in the Arsenal squad at the minute, the last thing we wanted was to lose him. So the news that Arteta has brushed off any rumours about him moving on and agreed an extension to his current contract must be seen as a positive piece of Arsenal transfer news.

Arsenal fans will just be hoping that this does not mean that Arsene Wenger thinks he has enough cover and quality in the centre of midfield. Arteta does do a great job of keeping possession and dictating the pace of the game, but he is much more effective when Arsenal are playing the so-called lower clubs.

When it comes to playing the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Man City or Barcelona, Arsenal do need more power to cope and the 32-year old Spaniard just has not got the legs. But will Wenger sign anyone to help him in January?

      1. City – Kompany
        Chelsea – Terry
        United – Rooney
        Barcelona – Xavi
        Madrid – Casillas
        Munich – Lahm
        . . .
        Arsenal – Arteta

        Hmm..

  1. Sorry to use your article as a soapbox but can’t resist.
So glad Gerrard fell arse over head to lose Liverpool the league after all those years
as SUAREZ has disclosed he badmouthed the Arsenal to stop him coming to us.

    1. I really am curious to know what goals the club set up for Arsene to achieve this season. Did they even set up any?

  2. Dortmund debt in 2005: £95m, Debt-free: By the end of this year. In the meantime: Two league-titles & runner-up in the Champions League

& we think wenger has done wonders others have perfected it

    1. We are living in denial and ignorance. We think Wenger has pulled off an impossible all these by paying off the stadium debt and still getting us CL year after after. When in fact he made the task look much more difficult than it should have been to hide his mediocrity behind it and win accolades.

    2. You are comparing apples with oranges. Did Dortmund build a massive new stadium worth 600m? How many top clubs are there in the Bundesliga? Bayern Munich are the only other decent club and when Dortmund still had their top players, them and Munich were miles above the other teams – hardly any competition. Where as since 2005 up until now, Arsenal had a stadium to build whilst all our best players departed leaving us in a much more difficult situation than Dortmund. Not to mention, there have been 4-5 teams capable of winning the BPL in the last decade – Us, Man United, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and Spurs did end one year in the top 4. In light of the above, you really cannot compare us with Dortmund at all.

  3. Still cant believe Vela wasnt good enough but this Clown Sanogo is still at the Club. Just Shows how much Wenger knows 68% of fans surveyed by Ladbrokes News thought it was time for Arsene Wenger to leave compared to 32% who thought he should stay

    1. There we go Big Gun was complaining about the validity of surveys, that said he will probably still find fault with this one!
68% of the fans wanting him gone, that figure is simply too high to ignore for anyone but Wenger and the board.

Fans need to take this a step further, match boycots and protests should follow…

      1. The question is not whether or not Wenger should go, I am in agreement with all of you that Wenger must go. The question is WHEN Wenger should go, and right now in the middle of the season is not the wisest of times. End the season would be the soonest, but I’d rather they plan it properly and get someone to replace Wenger worth the position. We cannot just replace Wenger for the sake of replacing him. Do you understand what I mean? Really not tryna be funny I just think this whole managerial change needs to be planned and executed properly.

        1. I think they should change the name of this site to justwengerout.com
No matter what the topic is, the comments are relentlessly filled with wenger this and wenger that, can we give it a break for a bit and actually talk about stuff thats a little different for once?

    2. Wenger’s blunders this season : Verm and Vela.
Jenk did not look like a blunder initially as most of us agreed to send him on loan untill the moment we realized that transfer window is gone and we are still handicapped in the defense.

  4. Perry Groves: “I’ve never known a manager to say they haven’t a chance of winning the title in November”
Arsenal would currently be 17th in the Premier League without Alexis

do u still want wenger to stay & continue ???????????????????????

    1. Arsenal would be 17 in tthe league without Sanchez. Wenger bought Sanchez. So instead of giving him credit, you use that fact to criticise him? Doesn’t make sense.

Wenger passed on signing Vela. But he did actually sign another player instead. You are deluded if you think Vela would have done better than Wellbeck.

There are a lot of people on here that I strongly disagree with. But I still respect them because they have their opinion and they stick to their conviction. You on the other hand yo-yo between AKB and AOB depending on how well Arsenal have done in their last three games. That is just dumb.

      1. Was it some sort of wonder secret that Sanchez was for sale? I don’t think so.
Other teams were in for him, guy made a choice also based on his wife’s desire to live in London.
Are you actually telling me that another Arsenal manager would not have bought Sanchez???
Leo’s point is valid, Wenger should have bought another 3-4- players and sent others on loan, he f**cked up yet another transfer window.

The Vela point is mute, if Giroud had been fit the guy would have been warming the bench, great player doing well in Spain, Wenger would have ruined him.

        1. But then he chose Arsenal because of the appeal of the club and its image, which the same Wenger has contributed immensely to. He should have gone to West Ham, Tottenham, QPR or Crystal Palace then. Wenger goofed big time by selling Vermaleen and loaning out Jenkinson. If he has retained both and still brought in Debuchy and Chambers. We would have been solid defensively. Chambers would have been playing the holding midfield / 3rd Central Defender Role (Its still beats me how and why wenger didn’t even try Vermaleen in that role – his cautious attitude is one of Arsenals biggest albatros) If Arsenal had started playing Joel Campbell on the flanks since the beginning of the season, when it was obvious Carzola was misfiring, Campbell will be getting used to the league by now and will have been chipping in with the odd goals time and again- but NO Arsene will stick with Carzola and even play him in the wings thereby putting pressure on gibbs because he lack the discipline to stay there and will rather keep roaming to the certain. Its only Wenger that have up to 4 free roaming players on the pitch at the same time. Its only Wenger that will play Ramsey and Wilshere on the pitch at the same time without realising its recipe for chaos.

      2. but Vela would have done better than Sanogo. And Welback signing was also the result of Giroud’s injury.

    2. @leo
Guess Perry wasn’t paying attention to Mourinho when he said it more than once last season. People laughed it off and put it down to him trying to mind f**K Pelligrini and AW. But Jose was being truthful in as far as he knew his side were not ready to win it.

  5. Sad to say this but this is why the club cannot move forward because of such deals.

We now have so many underperforming + 30’s players (Carzola, Arteta, Flamini, Mert, TR7). As much as having experienced players in the squad is good but sadly these players are mostly starters bar TR7 at Arsenal and there all past there best. Trust me next will hear Mert, TR7, and Flamini have also been given extensions therefore blocking out new recruits who could improve our team tremendously.

We need a beast of a DM and a proper CB, and a potential new captain as Wenger’s current captains are not inspiring at all.

    Wenger is clueless!!!

    1. I believe we can use a meatier, less leggy & sturdier CB than Per. Is the world that short of center-backs?

  6. Leo. he refused Vela, Song and Fabregas. Song could also play Cb Wenger used him there a couple times. Can you guys imagine what this team would have been like. No man! No No No. Enough is enough! ! Period. It’s time up now. #Wengerout

    1. Yeah let’s sign three players that forces their way out. You call Wenger weak but when he sticks to his conviction, which in this case was to not re-sign players that didn’t stick by him, you still criticise him.

      Mind boggling stuff there.

      1. How is it mind boggling?
He brings back Flamini who left but not Song, Fabregas and Vela didn’t force his way out, another player Wenger never played.

It would also have sent a clear message to players that the grass is not always greener (although at the minute under Wenger it definitely is!).

        1. Wenger did play Vela. May be you forget but at the time he was abysmal.

He doesn’t want to bring back former players and that is fair enough. I certainly won’t hold it against him if a player forces through a sale and Wenger ddoesn’t accept him back.

The only one of the three you mentioned that is relevant anyway is Fabregas. The other two were rubbish at Arsenal.

  7. In January I want Samir & Schneiderlin to be signed as DM role and Arteta and Ramsey for backup and rotation and for CB Ron Vlaar / Hummels / Laporte, anyone will work out of these three CB options. And I think we are not asking for too much. We have enough offensive options already so we are good at that front. As FA cup is also going to start for us so we need depth and quality both.
So by new Year team will be like
    ———————Schez———————–
    Debu——-New CB——–Boss——–Gibbs
    ——Schneiderlin———-Ramsey———–
    Theo—————–Ozil—————–Alexis
    ————-Danny———-Poldi—————

    Bench: Ospina,Chambers,Nacho,Mert / Santi,Arteta / Samir,OX,Oliver

COYG…. Hoping for the best against ManU…. I want to see my team wining against those glory hunters scums.

    1. Not a hope in hell of getting Schinderlin in Jan.
Our budget is rumoured to be 20 million, I don;t think that would be enough to get him.
By the way Southampton are 2nd, 8 points above us and a 12 point better GD.

    2. do you even know anything about football? making a line-up with 12 men on the pitch and samir is that nasri you talk about? cause he is the only one named samir i can think of. so nasri to arsenal? that is just stupid!

  8. i think arteta is being given the extension not because he’ll play the DM role. Arteta on his day is the finest passer in our team. Did you see some of his long balls against swansea. they were class! we ‘ll buy a DM irrespective of wenger out or not. And i personally feel arteta is an asset to any world class team sans the dm role he’s been dutifully playing under the deluded wenger! all of you defend ozil when he’s being played out of position and he cries like a fking 8 year old. Give arteta some respect, cos he’s also being played out of position and he takes it in his stride and never cries. And i personally think he ‘s better and less wateful than wilshere for the AM role .

    1. Arteta is a squad player nothing more. No team with serious title aspirations would have Arteta as a starter. Even in his prime, he was never good enough to start for a title caliber team. And he is well past his prime now.

  9. How many players do we have that can play right wing? How many do we have at left wing? How many Dm’s do we have? How many CB’s do we have? And than how many Cm’s do we have? What is my point? Balance!!! When a manager fails to balance his team properly he is in deep sh#t.

  10. Extending Arteta is a sign that the team has no aspirations. There may be a role for him next year as a squad player but why make the decision now, especially given the injuries he’s had this year? He is over the hill and breaking down and never has been suited to be a CDM.

  11. We have ZERO urgency to give extension to Arteta and Giroud, and have more important things to do like boosting our squad, taking care of the rotation…

    Wenger style
