Does this mean that Campbell is to start for Arsenal v Man City?

He has only had two brief senior appearances for Arsenal as a sub since Arsene Wenger was sufficiently impressed by his performances for Costa Rica at the World Cup finals, and you just know that Joel Campbell is straining to be let off the leash properly. Well the signs suggest that this weekend could be his time.

Arsenal are set to unveil a new front line with the pace of Alexis Sanchez on the left and Danny Welbeck on the right. So why not go the whole hog and use the pace and trickery of young Campbell on the left. That way the Man City defence will not be able to focus on one flank and not worry about pace down the left. Three really fast forwards is a nightmare for any defence.

However, I am not just guessing here, because there is a reason for me to think that Wenger has the Costa Rican in his plans. Campbell was not even on the bench for Arsenal under 21s last night as they beat Aston Villa 2-0, despite having played the full 90 minutes and impressing in their previous game against West Brom.

With just over a day between that reserve game and the Man City match, no player involved would be recovered in time, so I think Campbell’s absence means that he will be in the squad tomorrow at the very least. And Wenger is talking about being bold, so I think he is going to hit them with pace on three fronts, with Campbell on the left.

It will make for an interesting and exciting game, if I’m right that is. What do you guys think?

  1. Not sure if his ready for city but would be nice on either wing with Sanchez….
    …………Welbeck
    Camb………………Sanchez
    ………..,..Ozil

But wenger doesn’t seem to trust him yet. I think he got a coule of assist for the under 21s vs Westbrom 2 weeks ago, and was relaxed in the under 21s last game.

So who knows???he might get a call up.

    1. the line in the article: “Arsenal are set to unveil a new front line with the pace of Alexis Sanchez on the left and Danny Welbeck on the right” is not right…

      @JStarrr
Your line-up makes more sense to me. Isn’t Cazorla or OX to start ahead of Campbell more likely? I have a feeling Wenger will start Cazorla. But I think most of us would be crying out for more pace with Campbell or OX. He’ll most likely bring one of those later in the game.

    2. I hope he does start Campbell or Podolski on the left, they will relish being thrown into the deep end for sure! Welbeck + Campbell are real hard workers and would cover well for the flanks whilst adding some much needed speed for a counter.

      Szczesney
      Debuchy – Mertesacker – Koscielny – Monreal
      Flamini – Wilshere
      Sanchez – Ozil – Campbell
      Welbeck

    3. That’s like a dream come true…
      ………………………welbeck………………………
      Campbell…………………………………..Samchez
      ………………………..Ozill………………………….
Man, can’t wait 2watch the match!

    4. campbell is not ready for city, he needs to start against a lower team. Maybe the league cup match would be the best time for his full arsenal debut

  2. of course, but he will probably not start.
arsenes line up is quite clear up front.

    Szcesny
    Debuchy Merte Chambers Gibbs
    Flamini Wilshere
    Ozil
    Alexis Cazorla
    Welbeck

    1. He will play sanogo upfront and welbeck outwide compensate ozil RW for sanchez so cazorla can stil play cam and we play sh*t

  3. We need a PACEY front 3 to scare man city .. No passing side to side because of slow counter attack + Campbell is clinical and composed

  4. It will be interesting to see who was the better buy for 16 million: Welbeck or Balotelli?

At this point, I’m not confident in either one.

  5. Dont put too much pressure on welbeck, he has the potential for sure.. but not in Balotelli’s class yet.
As to if Campbell will start against City, well we all know Wenger.HE WONT START EITHER CAMPBELL OR POLDI, he doesnt rate them. Sanogo has a chance, as does Welbeck too. Either way I’d love to see Campbell on the pitch trying to prove himself

    1. Sanogo played in the under 21 match against villa so I doubt he’ll start. Maybe be used as a sub but he definitely won’t start.

  6. This article may be on to something if Campbell didn’t travel to play with Costa Rica. Assuming that he did travel for that, as I believe that I saw he did, that’s why he didn’t play with the 21s. I would love to see him get the start tomorrow, but I don’t believe that he will.

Though we need a balanced 11 that has pace on both flanks as well as down the middle, I can’t foresee Arsene not playing both Santi and Mesut. Therefore, he should go with the 4-2-3-1 with Jack next to Flamini, not the 4-3-3 with Flamini there by himself. And he must not put Mesut on either wing.

So the question becomes, who doesn’t make the squad tomorrow?

    Scez
    Debuchy, BFG, Kos, Nacho
    Flamini, Jack
    Alexis Mesut Santi
    Danny

Bench: Ospina, Chambers, Gibbo, Ox, Campbell, Arteta, Tomas

I’d personally would have like to see Campbell get more minutes earlier this season so that he’d be trusted to start this game so that we can have proper width and pace, and bring Santi off the bench. However, since Arsene hasn’t done that, then I hope he at least gets 25-30 minutes to change the game.

If we go 433, or opt to go East/West/South and commit our outside backs too far forward while trying to boss the ball, rather than going North with pace on the counter – get ready for another tennis score to get hung on us.

Here’s hoping Arsene sets us out properly.

  7. He needs to have sanchez on the left…. campbell on the right and ozil in the middle

2 pivot of Flamini and ramsay, if unhealthy then put in rosiscky in there, he’s not afraid to mix it up with the best of them. The back four gibs/kos/chambers(quicker than bfg)/debuchy.

bring subs on early 60-65 min (cazorla for ozil) Ox for campbell in the 75 mins, injects pace into the game and diaby for rosiscky to seal the game off in the 80+ mins.

  8. Oh Man! getting my heartbeats run faster…Will have to go back to the pub and down one, just to calm my nerves!

  9. I would like to see OX and Alexis on the wings and Welbeck in the middle, maybe Campbell substitution for OX after 60 min.

  10. Arsenal are set to unveil a new front line with the pace of Alexis Sanchez on the left and Danny Welbeck on the right. So why not go the whole hog and use the pace and trickery of young Campbell on the left.

Personally I’d like to see one of them through the middle – bit too left orientated for me. 🙂

  11. Szczesny
    Debuchy…Koscielny…Mertsacker.
    .wilshere
    Ozil…..Cazorla
    Welbeck…Podolski..Campbell…Sanogo

    3-3-4

  12. Guys… Wenger is too stupid to do the right thing. He dosen’t ever put out the right 11, he dosen’t set the right formation & he dosen’t make subs. We’ve lost our coach & we lost him in bits. Arsené (the winning coach) left in 2006, while wenger (the fighting coach) left in 2009. All we’re left with is an accountant!.
But that dosen’t stop us from praying & hoping he does the right thing… Does it??

  13. The truth remains; wenger will still use ozil on the planks so, its just gonna be another massacre becouse city have the strength and quality to explore our weaknesses.
Another problem is defensive work in the middle, we don’t have what it takes to battle toure or lampard or even to stop silva.
Don’t get me wrong, I am wenger is still arrogant that it has to be his way even if it means serial failure

  14. Amazingly a front three of Welbeck, Sanchez and Campbell would be a totally new front three. It could be the fastest front three in the premiership. We all know how Liverpool used speed as a successful weapon and finished second. Our trio of speed merchants could do the same. Watching Wenger play Ozil wide breaks my heart. He should be played as our central midfield hub. He is such a good player and we waste him tactically every game. I think Wenger is not helping Ozil at all. Anyway it’s time to blood Campbell. He looked great against Benfica and why not let him keep City’s full backs busy.
