Done deal? Do Arsenal fans want Juan Mata to sign for free?

Well we are used to hearing some strange Arsenal transfer rumours from TV pundits, but rarely do you get Adrian Durham so certain that a deal is done. It appears that he received some breaking news while he was appearing live on TalkSport.

He said: “I thought we were doing an appreciation hour for Juan Mata. After I said this, just a couple of minutes ago, just had a message going: ‘He’s going to Arsenal on a free’.

“We can’t do this anymore, if he’s going to Arsenal. We all love him now, but who is going to love him when he goes to Arsenal?

“He’s going to be going to Arsenal on a free! He was with [Unai] Emery on a free wasn’t he, so he’s going to Arsenal on a free because he is out of contract in the summer.”

“This is breaking news, Juan Mata is going to Arsenal.

“This is what I have heard, it is not official. My sources close to the club have said he is going to Arsenal on a free.

“By the way, when it happens, you can all ring up and say ‘We doubted you but, as ever, you were right.’”

He seems so certain, but if it is true then surely Arsenal have been breaking the rules by talking to him before his contract is finished at Man United? But it is certainly a possibility.

Would Arsenal fans want the ex-Chelsea and current Man United star at the Emirates?

  1. Yes..iv always admired him .He is a gen on the wings. Before joining chelsea wenger wanted him but we could not match the bid

    1. Maya will add some attacking focus and aggression upfront. He us a good player and can adapt easily at arsenal.

  2. He is 31 and Mhki is I think 30. Of those two, Mata is clearly the more effective player and importantly , the most REGULARLY effective player. I have no idea whether or not this Durham led rumour has legs, but IF it has, then it is exciting. Mata is also a proper free kick expert which we have not had since RvP. At still 31, Mata is far from finished. CAZORLA was 33 and few, if any Gooners, rightly, thought him too old, had he not been so sadly, taken away from our team, while still in his prime. So, please let it be true!

    1. If we did get Mata then who would we force out?
Mata, Mkhi and Ozil for the AM role… Lot of big wages.

If we tried to force Ozil out then who would pay his wage? I also think Ozil is quality, we just need to get him ticking, he is a big help in our marketing as well.

If we forced Mkhi out then how would Auba feel? His goals are nice to have and I would hate to lose him too soon due to personal matters.

  3. Mata isn’t that great that we should want him, even on a free, if he was that good, he won’t be leaving on a free transfer
If he’s the one stalling that’s another issue, but I don’t think he’s been offered a contract, moreover, age isn’t on his side

    1. The reasons why not are
      1. He isn’t that great
      2. Age
      3. We currently have players who are arguably better than him in his natural position

    2. “if he was that good, he won’t be leaving on a free transfer” So he can’t be a good player because he ran down his contract? Brilliant logic. Do you even realise the countless amount of world-class players that have be transferred on a free? Please do your research before spouting ill informed nonsense.

      1. I won’t reply with the tone you used to reply, but get this, very good players only leave on a free cos they have refused to sign an offered contract not cos a contract hasn’t been offered. No team will let a very good player leave on a free without offering a contract, Max Meyer, Leon goretzka, kolasinac, those are the good players I know that left on a free and twas cos they refused to sign contracts, the same thing with rabiot, if he leaves on free, it’s cos he doesn’t want to sign. Robben and ribery despite their ages and injury record, were still offered contracts by a whole Bayern Munich last season

If a team at man Utd’s level is considering whether to offer a player in his last year a contract extension, I don’t think it’s that player arsenal should go for, especially when we have a better player in that position

  4. Tired of these kind of deals. Its been eight seasons too late for this deal.If he’ll won’t be overpaid then it’s fine but otherwise it wouldn’t make sense. He’s also a No. 10 so this means he should be a backup for Ozil.I would’ve preferred we do not sign him since we have Mkhi for Ozil’s backup.

    1. Mkhi has been the one player who has NOT progressed under Emery. Can’t remember the last time he had a good game – maybe last season?

      1. Yeah I see your point. He was far better under Wenger. The season’s not over so let’s hope he can improve. Is Mata going to leave Utd to become another back up?I don’t see us dropping or selling Ozil any time soon?

        1. I can’t really see us selling Mkhi anytime soon either, he is on a good wage with us and if we forced him out then how would Auba feel?

          Workplace politics =.=’

      2. Agree. Mkhi is Ozil light and about as unreliable as to whether he disappears in games or not. Skill is no use unless you produce it and REGULARLY. Mkhi doesn’t, hence I prefer Mata. Simples!!

  5. Well he’s an upgrade on Miki for sure, and in my opinion, I’d pick him over Ozil as well. Before I get hate for saying that, what has Ozil done in big games this season (Liverpool, Chelsea, City)? Mata is more likely to produce the goods on the big occasions.

    1. Is rather have none of them but this is where we are today.I was against the Mkhi signing because I felt it will deny us the chance of signing a RW for at least one season.I was also against the Ozil contract but we are told he’s a brand but as to actual performance on the pitch I reserve my comments. As for Mata it’s eight seasons too late.I’d rather his wages will be put to much better use.

    2. Ozil worked his socks off in the Liv game as much as anyone. His switching between positions with Auba, and Mkhit, that is what caused Liv the problems, they couldn’t mark us the way we marked them. Unfortunately most of the better chances fell to Mkhit, but it was Ozil, Lacazette, Aubameyang, and Mkhit working their socks off defensively one minute before up pressing the front moments later. They played well except for Mkhit in the final third, but it was a very tight game with only a goal a piece. They had a good game which it seemed most people were aware of, so am surprised you would niggle at him for a game in which he helped give us solidity, effort and rhythm, seeing as most people do it for the opposite type game.

  6. Another Man utd reject, we already have players of Mata caliber, the like of Ozil and Mikhi, I don’t think we need him. And again his wages is another problem, which I don’t think Arsenal can shell out, he is already on 140k per week, and will be demanding more.
I prefer spending the wages on a new young players not another player in his 30s

  7. “We all love him now, but who is going to love him when he goes to Arsenal?”

What an odd thing to say, from one of the most anti-Arsenal pundits you’ll ever come across.

  8. Mata is one of those players, on the ball he is great to watch, but off the ball he’s not a trier, and at his age even he was decent at retrieving the ball or helping out the fullback it is unlikely he could do that week in week out. This seems it’s more about the price for the quality, also his wage at utd is 150 I think I read. I would rather the team acted like we did when going for Guendouzi, Adli, Torriera, even though I like the Litch and Sokratis signings I think it would be wrong to sign anymore aging forward players.

  9. off topic– R. Nelson was warned on England call up.
Right now I think he is the one warning them.
scored another goal from the bench.

  10. ESR has done well when called upon and he can backup Ozil, he can challenge Mkhi. Why pay Matas wage?

Is Emery going to want a number 10 in the future?
Which of our kids who plays number 10 can’t also cover other AM areas? ESR can score goals as well as create, although this can be ideal for a number 10, it can also be used as an inside forward who makes runs in behind to be a goal threat.
Nelson is another example of someone who is looking very exciting as a left inside forward over a pos like number 10… Or even the traditional winger who sticks the line to whip in crosses.
Iwobi has stepped up and can play as a number 10 but also very good on the left under Emery.

I wonder if we will move away from a number 10 when we lose our current number 10 players, go more for a 3 man CM which looks a bit like 1 DM and 2 B2B who press high up to win the ball back. Fullbacks will be told to push forward and act like wingers/high pressing fullbacks, almost inline with the B2B players who are pressing. 2CBs and a DM is cover for breaks past that pressing line and it leaves 3 outfield players to act as strikers. This can be a couple of inside forwards and an all rounder CF who can bring in others just as well as finishing a chance himself… Almost like a number 10 at times. aka Laca.

    GK

    DM
    RB/B2B/B2B/LB
    RF/CF/LF

    1. Hmm, didn’t like the CBs inbetween the GK and DM in that post 😛

      GK
      CB/CB
      DM
      RB/B2B/B2B/LB
      RF/CF/LF

The CBs would split a bit to also be able to cover the wider areas while Torreira can be trusted to protect the center more than non DMs could previously for us.

  11. I must say im disappointed in some of the response im seeing…
The only think Mata of Utd is better than Mkhi in is nothing.. n maybe just freekicks with Ozil.
… Mata of Utd is as average as they get, he isnt the same guy from Valencia that was a baller at Chelsea anymore, he has changed from that for more than 5years now.
….we dnt need to add more deadweight to the club, i ll rather we got Banega for CM instead if we must get another old head in midfield.
….only two players from Utd can be an improvement on what we have presently without making anything worse.. Bailly and Martial.
……aside those two we shouldnt be considering any other UTD player.

Having said that for January n the Summer we should focus on our needs rather than luxury…
We need wingers, CB, backup DM

  12. i think we covered this topic on this forum like less than a week ago, so the general answer was no….and for me it’s also a no, so mata you can try your luck in Italy, US or China for a final pay day!
