Emery gives biggest hint yet that Arsenal will spend big in the summer

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has given the biggest hint yet that he will be spending big money on a marquee player in the summer transfer window. There has been a lot of debate over whether Arsenal will have a significant transfer budget in the summer with a figure of £40 Million being touted in the event we fail to qualify for next seasons Champions League.

However, that has not stopped the media from claiming that we will be spending much more than that on individual players, as an example just last week the Sun claimed it would cost £60 Million to sign Barcelona’s Malcom.

It now seems that some of the rumours over players with huge price tags are not necessarily hyperbole and that Emery will consider buying such players.

“I think we can improve first, by spending money to achieve players,” Emery said.

“In the past the club have done great work in watching players, finding and signing young players and developing our players in the academy.

“I have big respect for our work, for our players in the academy. I want to develop the players here – giving them progress to achieve something at a big club like we are.

“We can also achieve [buy] some players who are in other teams, who can come here and give us this performance – like Van Dijk with Liverpool.”

Emery added: “We can share both situations. Developing players with us and [finding] some players who we can spend money on to help us.

“I think we are in the right way with the club, with the owner, with Raul Sanllehi [head of football] to find that. To fight against the teams with more money than us, maybe Manchester City, maybe Real Madrid.

“Arsenal is great. Our objective is to be with the best teams in the world.”

That to me confirms that we will be spending big, Emery makes it clear we have to buy big to be competitive with the elite, both in the Premier League and in Europe.

It does make the rumours doing the rounds a lot more interesting, especially with the high priced speculation.

  1. Get Michael Seri from Fulham that’s just been relegated. He remains a class player that would do well to replace Ramsey.

    Let them keep Calum Chambers

    1. I guess you do not pay attention to loan moves? Shame, Chambers has done very well on loan to the point where he was one of the first names on the sheet… If I am not mistaken he is one of the highest interceptions per 90 mins for a DM.

  2. I like how he spoke about the past but said “I have big respect for our work. Then going on to say “Arsenal is great. He really sounds like he’s looking forward to the challenge. Yes they’ll all likely say something along the lines of – We want to be one of the very best – or some other words being the right words to say. Emery’s work ethic and attention to detail though, it suggests he means it, or at least he means to try his damndest. Emery doesn’t come across to me as one of those guys who’ll dole out the platitudes because they sound like the right thing to say.

  3. I’ll believe it when I see the new expensive player in our kit. Nothing against UE, but Kronke holds the purse strings, and unlikely to open them too wide.

Kronke doesn’t care about trophies and glory. He cares about making maximum money with minimum investment. We’re not “self-sustaining” because we have to be, only because the owner is allergic to the costs of competing for PL and CL title.

  4. A big no to Malcom – not a suitable winger for the Premier League, especially not at a high price. We need someone who will have at least a tiny positive effect defensively except for his attacking skill.

Of course, if you’re as good as Hazard, it becomes a different story, but that quality we will not be spending on.

We need some more Uruguayans. Those guys are fighters.

  5. If people are moaning about Silent Stan…

Was it Silent Stan who pulled Ramsey contract offer or Raul?
Was it Silent Stan who gave Ramsey the contract offer along with Ozil his wage, or was that Gazidis?

If we can not spend big then how the hell do we have Auba and Laca?

Silent Stan is an absent owner, not one who is micromanaging us to squeeze every penny he can out the club, he has dumped it in the hands of his staff and jetted back to USA to get on with his life.

Easy to mock someone disliked by large groups, I guess it doesn’t matter if it is truth or not, people will get behind anything bad about Silent Stan, ignoring if it is truth or not in favour of bashing a man they do not know.

I find it sickening as I see it as giving the people who really messed up, giving those people a clean slate. Ignore the real issues in favour of the ‘fashion moan’.

I’m waiting for someone to show me that we didn’t buy Auba 6 months after Laca… I mean… Silent Stan would never allow big spending right?

  6. Fix the defence and tell the defenders
to kick the ball awy asapl when itis bobbing around.in the box.
Had they not appealled for os the game
    wouldnt have been lost

  7. It im not mistaked theoney we spent on auba and laca was not the owners money, it was the money we already had.
What people are trying to say is we wish we had an owner who has ambition, someone who would put 100 mil of his own money to buy a world class player or two
