After Arsenal’s defeat to Man City on Sunday, Unai Emery was heavily criticized for trying to play Pep-style pressing game and playing out from the back to try and retain more possession against the Champions of England. In fact Sam Allardyce even called him ‘stupid’ to try it.
But surely no-one can expect the Gunners new team to be playing his style to perfection in his first ever Premier League game, especially against City, and according to the Sky Sports pundit Liam Rosenior, Emery should be judged much later in the season when he has had time to get his ideas across. He said: “Emery’s probably spoken to the directors and said this is the way I play.
“This is what I can give you, not just over one year but over three, or four, or five.
“That Arsenal team have been struggling for a few years and it takes time to build something, and if you deviate from that straight away you already give away your power and style of play.
“Emery has come in at Arsenal, and they’re trying to get in the top four, he’s trying to play the same way.
“He’s won titles with Sevilla, he’s won three Europa Leagues in a row, and I find it a bit disrespectful to have a go at him trying to build something in the same way Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have in the past.
“Sam Allardyce was having a go at a manager who’s just had his first game, playing against the best team in the league, trying to put a stamp on his philosophy into this club.
“Let’s see how Arsenal do in six months in six months’ time, because I saw a lot of good in their play.
“Yes they lost, yes Cech made mistakes playing out, but I saw them being able to press the ball because they were trying to rest in possession.”
I know that so many fans, especially on justarsenal, are always looking for instant success and get irate when they don’t get it, but life is simply not like that. Rome wasn’t built in a day and practise makes perfect. Let us all try to show a bit of decorum and patience and let Emery do his job without any judgements for the next six months please?
Sam P
I still feel positive about this season and Emery’s gameplay. I’m standing behind him, let’s hope he learns from his mistake and select our best players from now on
??
Sure. I get that Emery needs a couple of season + funding to implement his preferred style ans philosophy. Nothing wrong with that. However, i will like to see some adaption of tactics to match the opposition, but all I saw was the same mentality Wenger used to implement and got laid off for all these years.
A mentality of insisting to play the same way and style regardless of opposition. Sure when you have the best squad in the league with 2 full seasons of experience under your style you can afford to give a rat’s ass about the opposition. But not when u have a squad in transition against the best team in the league.
Unfort Big Sam was right with this one. Why are trying to emulate the best team in the league at their own game? (Passing out from the back) when we cant even do it properly. A good manager would have shut up shop, kept it tight at the back and tried to hit on the counter. Instead, we went gungho and ended up all over the shop at the back
Theres a good 30 games at least to integrate a passing against less able opposition. You dont do that on your 1st game against the best team in the land. It costs us 3 points doing it, and emery will do well to remember its points that count at the end, not the philosophy. I hope he learns from this and doesnt end up with the same stubborness Wenger had when he refused to adapt to the opposition
Let’s give him time AND money.
Yes, its going to take a while before arsenal starts playing exactly like emery wants especially due to the players we have, our squad is too unbalanced. We have good players in the same positions like lacazette and aubameyang also ozil and mkhitaryan, but lack quality wingers, so its going to take a couple of transfer windows to fix it. Guardiola’s first year wasn’t so good because they had so many players that were too old or didn’t fit his style of play like mangala, hart, zabaleta, clichy, sagna etc, he had to sell and buy his type of players and it took time for the players to understand fully how he wants them to play but look at them now. He was able to achieve this in two years because of their resources so its going to take us more time as we can’t spend like them.
Yeah, I don’t see anything wrong in his game plan following what I saw on a particular site analysing his tactics, he should just make sure he gets not only the tactics right, but also the selection this time around, which I feel he will do, considering the fact that the players that didn’t do well didn’t finish the match in the first place
I totally agree that he should be given time to me the game was good let us have patient
Allardyce seemed to want to be Arsenal manager
I believe in Emery and it was just one game
As long as Emery has the guts to use his own system
Rome wasn’t built in a day
but you don’t expect us
to wait 3 hundred years surely.
But yes a full PL round (19 games)
and 6 Europa league games 25 games in all
will give us a better idea on progress by the end of the year.
I am really looking forward to the line up for the Chelsea match and if some of our past manager favorites will get into the starting 11.
It will tell us if Emery is serious in changing the Arsenal mentally, where some players are guaranteed spots even when performance in previous games were below the standard required.
We dont just have a style problem at Arsenal but a quality problem as well. To many players are not up for the job and not good enough for a club who pretends to be aiming the 4th place. Emery could make use of someone who give him the means to succeed but that ship has sailed now us Usmanov is moving to Everton. Boy just imagine that.
You imply Seville won
multiple La Liga tiles under Emery.
They actually placed no better than 5th.
Emery’s Seville did win 3 Europa leagues.
However only in the 3rd year did
that qualify Seville for the CL and in that following season
they failed to get past the CL group stage.
So Seville was essentially a Europa league side under Emery
with league placings of 9th 5th 5th +7th.
Prior to Seville Emery recorded 6th 3rd 3rd 3rd at Valencia.
So to be fair a good fit for 2018 Arsenal or maybe not?
Sevilla and Valencia are not big clubs per se. 3rd, 5th, finish with 3 Europa titles aren’t bad considering the little funding he would have gotten. I think he will be good for us, but if he has to catch up with man city, he has to be funded.
Yes 1st or second are too
far away just yet.
But Spurs Utd and Chelsea
seem to have internal issues
so 3rd through 6th is very open this season.
6 months is short. Give him a few years. We have an aging squad in key positions. It will take time. Expect us to lose to Chelsea and you won’t be disappointed. I think later this season the biggest change will be not dropping as many points to “small” teams but the big teams all have good managers who have had years with their squads. 4th is doable only if the likes of Man U and Spurs struggle.
How much I love realists like you. If only there were far more of us!
Maybe Unai will not need too long to make big improvements TAC as long as he moves swiftly to bench the under performers and gives the new guys a chance instead – which he did against City.
They had their chance so now let’s hope they stay benched for the Chelsea game.
More like 6 years!! That’s if he gets that long!!
Arsenal manager just needs time to interact with the team so that players can adapt to his style
Thanks Lupe and Sammie, Unai Emery is a quality manager with trophies from clubs that want trophies and winning mentality not dwelling more on how much the book is balanced. Success in one area leads to other successes. The quality of players Pep inherited from Pellegrini is more than the present crop of Arsenal players yet he won nothing after adding one or two players that season. Pep never stopped updating his squad and we can see the results on display, what about Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool. I truly believe that Emery has what it takes to put Arsenal fc on the winning path again, the big question is Stan Kronke and group ready and willing? If they keep looking for only players their prices are very low, about to retire or run down their contract. As Arsenal fans we should know how and where to channel our greviances.
?
Time is a luxury most managers are not given. The former boss was given aet but had consistently failed to lift the gunners . The problem was he was too arrogant and had to go.
In this day and age in the fw,how he can last 22 years is beyond me. I doubt Emery can survive 3 years if Arsenal are unable to challenge.
CP scored quick goals against Fulham. That’s the way fast and direct instead of pass and pass and pass to eternity.I am against overpass because that gives defences time to mass.
Emery will have a measure of the task against Chelsea. There is no reason why Arsenal cant win if the refs are 100% impartial.Oh assuming Arsenal doesn’t play against 12/13/14 guys.
Unlike Arsene Wenger if Unai Emery is not supported by the Arsenal board he will walk. He will not fritter away his career at Arsenal, as he will get plenty of offers elsewhere to coach.
Some on here clearly think that Emery can just wave his magic wand and all Wengers dross and mildew will magically disappear, “just like that.” Arch realists like me and others on here, including Phil, know the size of the task he has to overcpme. Not just City, Liverpool, etc but also Wengers rubbish left behind and a disastrous owner who cares nothing of glory, only of personal wealth. If Kroenke sold up tomorrow- in fantasy land – many of our problems would be far quicker sorted out.
And what you’d all have wanted him to play? To park the bus? We would have been destroyed if he he’d played that way. So many sofa managers in here. It is embarrassing how he got so much stick after just one game. Shame on you so called Arsenal supporters
dun mind them
can we get bernard and meyer for free
