FT: WOLVES 3-1 ARSENAL – Alfie’s Game Review and Player Ratings

An abysmal performance last night but not a particularly unexpected result. We knew about Wolves’ excellent record against the top 6 and the team seemed resigned to losing, with a lack of urgency or a spark throughout the game producing a very blank performance. Whilst we started the more threatening, with some neat build up play and getting into dangerous areas, we lacked incisiveness or any real cutting edge or assertive play.

They scored from two set pieces, one cheaply given away after Mkhitaryan lost the ball high up the pitch, the second, whilst reinforcing the idea that Leno is still weak at commanding his box, also included abysmal defensive organisation from a set-piece for the second game running- something we have looked competent at this season previously.

The third goal just before half-time completely knocked the stuffing out of us, with dreadful defending and poor goalkeeping again. Whilst we dominated the ball and territory in the second period, again there was a lack of incision and we struggled to get through a stubborn Wolves defence. To me, this only emphasised my belief that we are desperate for a direct, natural winger who can create against a packed defence.

Top 4 is still on for me, but we need one particular game to go our way and to get at least 7 points from our remaining three games. Gutting.

  1. Yes, we need specialist inverted wingers that have good tricks and excellent first touches. Dangerous wide forwards that are able to cut inside to score and have the guts to dribble past the opponents to reach the bylines

We require brave wide players in the mold of Salah/ Mane, Sterling/ Sane, Messi/ Dembele or Neymar/ Mbappe. Gone are the days when the traditional strikers are the main goalgetters in the front line, such as the inconsistent Aubameyang and Lacazette

We also have to drop any no 10 tactic and adopt the quick 4-3-3/ 4-1-2-1-2 as what the other top European teams do. The so-called playmaker just slows down the attacks and we can allocate his space to have a gutsier attacker on a wing

    1. Inconsistent auba who as more goals that you’re brave inverted wingers like salah, mane ,Sterling, sane ?

      1. Agree 100% I love Aubameyang And Lacazette
Both are on the top scorers leader board
If we had a top CAM they would be even higher

My favourite players are Auba, Laca and Torreira BTW

    2. We need wingers in this team for sure and I’d go as far as saying we need two new wingers in the team. Reiss Nelson is much more of a team player than people think and his actual best position is at No. 10.I hope we sign a winger and then integrate Reiss Nelson in the squad slowly. It’s a shame because he’s not ready but such are the demands of the current team.I wish he was sent to an EPL club instead of Hoffenheim though because we need him to come and adapt sooner rather than later.

      1. I second that Kev. Let’s hope he’s ready for the EPL in the very near future, along with E S Rowe. One major thing I like about ESR is that he will SHOOT! Sick to death of the tip-tap rubbish!

  2. Arsenal most desperately need mobile players.
Ball players all over the pitch.
That’s what every team has in the top 6.
Currently only Maitland Niles and iwobi can take on players but not to such great effect.
Lacazette is also able but I wouldn’t regard him as a true natural dribbler.
With that our concern with both wing positions the attacking midlflield central midfield and left fullback position.where the team clearly deficient in the style of play.
It is urgent and compulsory to attend to those positions

  3. We are back to Arsene Tippy Tappy, hold the ball for 75% of the game and do sod all with it. I am a big George Graham fan still mainly because with his teams and tactics you know that to beat us, teams had to fight for 95 mins and to score against us they had to have real talent. Now we are back to the hundred passes with nowhere to go and a wide open defence. This is now the ninth year in succession without an ARSENAL defence.

  4. Btw did you hear that we’re in for another Man Utd cast off. Lol. We’re only giving those who failed at bigger clubs some game time eh?

      1. I hate to admit it Luke but Smalling and Jones are better than we have right now. And I detest Man Utd!
