Dan’s World Cup Diary – Southgate has created his own problems….

As we keep being reminded this is a young England squad, so surely Gareth Southgate should have known better. A man who himself has played international football he apparently thought that a few games of darts and bowling with the press would change how they reported on his men.

Trying to make the media get to know or even become friends with millionaire superstars was his secret weapon, a philosophy which would differentiate him from a Fabio Capello. So now our manager is let down that his potential starting line up would be printed in newspapers, he trusted everyone that the sake of his sides success was the main agenda. Those who dared take advantage of Steve Holland not knowing in 2018 that cameras are everywhere supposedly won’t be invited to the next pool contest.

For a man praised for how articulate he speaks this is naive from a guy who knows personally how unforgiving the world Is to failure. Yes most sports writers are football supporters who love in their lifetime to see their nation win a World Cup. This though is also their jobs, their bosses have paid them to go to Russia (transport and accommodation provided) to get as much content as they can.

Tabloids are competing with each other. Whoever can email their editors with the most juicy story puts more food on their family’s tables as they wlll sell more papers or get more clicks online.
With the impact of social media its an industry where jobs are harder to seek. In other words using this summer as a free holiday, trying to be Harry Kane’s best mate would most likely be a sackable offence.

Yet listening to press conferences in the last few days that seems to be the expectation. Forget about work or deadlines, don’t type anything that might mentally affect us. What if we draw with Panama? Should the media not dare criticise for fear of upsetting 23 adults?

Of course we shouldn’t drop points this weekend. The reality is whoever starts vs the Central Americans should earn 3 points fairly comfortably. The world knowing our XI a few days in advance is an non story based on the limited opposition, it’s the managers and players reaction to it which has made it an issue. It’s made them show their hand. That all this being open and letting people come in to their inner circle was just a ploy to try to escape any criticism. How transparent, how weak minded. How arrogant and naive!

That’s the bigger story.

      1. Except that Germany did not play any better without Ozil, the pundits called him German assist king. He is one of their best players

  1. Maybe he simply wants to gain more support from English media and fans

I guess Spain, England and Belgium would go far in World Cup, due to their strategy and style of play

    1. This is a very heavy weighted Germany team, better than the winner of 2014 WC they can beat anyone 7-1 with easy

      1. The principle of modern football; Reduce the number of slow left footed players, so for Ozil i think his absence makes this team more stronger and speed

        1. Agree. It’s the right decision. Ozil wasnt terrible last game but he’s not a player that makes a team play quicker. And part of the reason Germany were not good against Mexico was how slow their passing was. Kroos also at fault for that. We’ll see how the Germans do today.

      1. haha, we’ll see. I think his free ride is over. Emery will bench players that don’t perform unlike Wenger. PSG he was bossed around by the players, and I don’t think he will let that happen again. Primadonna era at Arsenal is ending. Bellerin better be alert too.

  2. Forsberg not looking good. Keeps on losing the ball every time. Worst player in his team so far.

  3. Germany VERY fortunate to be down only 1 at
the break. Obvious penalty on the breakaway and
Neuer with a WC save at the halftime whistle.

Theyll find a way in the 2nd half but color me
    unimpressed so far.

  4. How to lose a game by Sweden

    WTF

Up a man and you play 2 lose, well done. Enjoy
the rest of summer you bottlers.

    1. I was just about to say the same thing. That was embarrassing. They deserve to be eliminated from that outcome alone. I can’t even imagine how the fans feel after the final whistle.

    1. IMO this World Cup just goes to show, that modern football is not about national teams no more, CL is the pinnacle now. I would love to see a tournament where the top 2-4 teams from each of the best leagues around the world competed in a World Cup format.

      1. Or perhaps each country picks players who play in their leagues to form one team, so Messi and Ronaldo for the Spanish, Salah and Kane for England etc etc

  5. Association Football is the world game. Changing the World Cup to a club championship would limit its appeal. There is already a club championship between the top clubs of the component continental federations.
