Arsenal won their opening game of the weekend against new boys Coventry City and did so very comfortably, while rivals such as Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United endured tougher days.
City earned a late win against Bournemouth, while Liverpool scored a late equaliser against Newcastle United and Manchester United were beaten by Hull City. These are the teams expected to challenge the Gunners for the league title this term, but their difficult starts will delight the defending champions, who have greater stability, and that showed in their first game of the season.
Arsenal Show Early Title Credentials
Arsenal also defeated City in the Community Shield, making it difficult to see a team capable of stopping them this term.
It can be argued that this is only the start of the season, but Arsenal have clearly returned from the summer in terrific shape. They now have a unique chance to win back-to-back league titles after failing to win the championship for two decades.
Before winning the latest title, Arsenal had come close on several occasions but lacked the experience required to get over the line. They now have that experience, and their opening performance has strengthened the belief that they can retain the trophy.
Neville Backs Arsenal for Glory
The Gunners appear to have the stability required to compete throughout the campaign, while several of their main rivals have already shown signs of vulnerability. Their strong start could therefore prove significant as the season develops.
Neville believes Arsenal are in an excellent position to win the title, with the former player stating via the Metro: ‘We’ve got new managers, lots of new players and so much change at the top. Arsenal should win this league by a street.
‘We’ve seen Tottenham get beaten, Man United lose, Liverpool nearly lose, Man City scrambling for a win at home…
‘The unpredictable nature we thought we’d see at the top we have seen on this opening weekend. It’s played out pretty much how I thought it would do.”
The opening weekend has certainly encouraged Arsenal, although the Gunners will need to maintain their level throughout the season to fulfil the expectations surrounding them.

They are all like that – lilly-livered pundits!
It’s totally ridiculous to make such early statements of this kind.
For me, I take it in 6 game segments. I like to see if they can get more points in a 6 game segment than their previous 6 and so on.
Then a picture of how they’re doing starts to form, then making predictions are not as daft as they are after one game. 🤦♂️
