2019-2020 Arsenal of Sanllehi, Monchi and Emery by JimBeam
After listening to the Arsecast podcast with Ornstein, I now have a pretty decent idea of where we are headed. From the Trident that was supposed to support Emery, Sven and Ivan are gone and Sanllehi has consolidated power. He seems to be a one man show running Arsenal at the moment, especially considering our absentee landlords are the Kroenkes. He is giving full support to Emery and both of them seem to have Monchi as their ideal target for Technical Director. Considering that all three men are ruthless operators when it comes to under performing players; Here is what I expect from the Summer transfer window.
Players Leaving:
Cech 100K, Monreal 65K, Lichtsteiner 90K, Ramsey 110k, Welbeck 70k: Total savings 435K per week
Players that will be sold:
Ospina 3-5M – wages saved 40K, Jenkinson 2-3M – 45k, Mustafi 15-20M – 90k, Koscielny free – 75k, Elneny 10-15M – 55K, Ozil 15-30M – 350K. Transfer fees 45M – 75M, Wage savings: 705K
If we take the lower end of the transfer fees, we will have about 50M extra to spend and a 1.140M per week almost 60M a year in wage savings.
According to Ornstein we should have about a 100m to spend if we make it to CL, considering that I don’t think we will make it to the CL, I think we will have closer to 50M to spend, add to that the 50M from sales and we should actually have a realistic budget of 100M Pounds.
Obviously that still is not a lot of money in today’s transfer market but if we are smart we can get a few good players.
The one Central Defender that I would go after is Toby Alderweild, obviously it would be a great coup to get a top Spurs player and with a release clause of only 25M he is the best available defender for the price. He is 29 so he has a good 3-4 years at the top level in front of him and at the price I think he is a steal.
Another 25M player is Alex Grimaldo, an ex-Barcelona player playing at Benfica. We seem to be one of the two clubs, along with Atletico Madrid, with the most chance of signing him. A cheaper option would be Kieran Tierney from Celtic at 21. He has a lot to learn, but is extremely talented for around 15M he would be my second choice. I don’t think Leicester would sell Ben Chilwell for less than 30M ,so I don’t really consider him as a viable option and more than likely he will be a City player.
In midfield our best option would be to sign Rabiot on a free transfer. He is an ex-Emery player and everyone in the Arsenal hierarchy seems to have a very high opinion of him. And with our limited transfer budget, we do need to make at least one free transfer to be able to plug all our holes.
This leaves us with around 50M and a winger left to buy. There are obviously many choices out there from Pepe, Bailey, Malcom, Brandt, Draxler, etc… Can any of these or another top name be a realistic candidate? Yes, I think so, specially if we spread the transfer fee over a few years like we did with Torreira, I think we would be able to afford any one of them.
I also think that we could get these four players for about 700K per week on wages leaving another 440K in our wages to help pay future fees.
So what does Arsenal 2019-2020 look like
GK: Leno, Martinez
RB: Bellerin, Chambers, AMN (last two also play in midfield)
LB: Grimaldo, Kolasinac
CB: Alderweild, Sokratis, Holding,Mavropanos
CM: Rabiot, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Torreira,Willock
Wingers: Iwobi, Nelson, Mkhitarian, Pepe, ESR,Saka
Strikers: Auba, Laca, Nketiah
I seriously think this young squad with some of the experienced players is the Arsenal side that will start the onslaught to the top of the division. It might take another transfer window or two but this is definitely a very good starting point to take us back to the top.

Chambers cannot be used as RB.. he performs well in the DMF position for Fulham.

Yes, Chambers has good skills and height to be a DM. He is too slow to be an RB and inconsistent as a CB, so better use him as DM, could be another revelation like Coquelin
I want Rabiot because he is young, despite he has similar playing style as Guendouzi’s. Any freebie is okay to be gambled on, if the freebie doesn’t ask too much money like Kolasinac and Mkhitaryan
Regarding JimBeam’s suggestion, I hope Arsenal would not chase Alderweild due to his age and also not Bailey because of his form in this season. No World Cup flops like Draxler and Brandt as well, I have seen how they played and I don’t think they are the type of wingers Arsenal need
I still think Chambers was starting to find his rhythm as a CB during last season, and the loan was a mistake. Definitely could’ve used him in our current squad. I hope we don’t sell him just yet.

Obviously no-one knew the injury crisis that was to befall the club, but the annoying thing is that UE can’t even get the funds to bring him back from his loan contract.

Mavropanos is key in central defence, let’s not overlook him… he needs to be playing regular in my humble. Holding too when available. Alderweild is too old for me, another Lichtsteiner gamble is not what we need in the summer. Bailly is just not polished enough either. Medley has had a massive year with the youngsters and could feature next summer too. As far as attacking midfield, Iwobi and especially Mykhitaryan aren’t anywhere near good enough for me, but despite this, we just don’t have the budget to go and better them. So Emery, hands tied already… Welcome to Wengers world.

If he is as powerful and mobile as Vieira, it’s okay since Arsenal do not need to pay any transfer fee to PSG

Can never tell from afar, but she isn’t his manager.
It never seems to quite work when a player is managed by a close relative. I think it puts even more of a barrier between player and club than an agent.
I understand the economic argument for Rabiot, but wonder if he will happily slot into the club. Sanchez was brilliant but allegedly caused a lot of unrest in the dressing room.
I’d love if we could get Pepe, not that I know that he will be a success, it is more because we’d be beating the top sides to his signature. Sven is said to be very keen on him, and even though he’s leaving he is still urging us to make a grab for him. If we do get Rabiot, we should make a play for an expensive player with the money saved on that deal.
For CB ..Mathijs de Ligt, might be a good option, ball playing CB and he’s young, only 18 I think. Holland and Ajax can produce good ones at times. Maybe to find a V Dijk alternative we should look into Holland.
Lazano is another good one from Holland, certainly hitting good numbers, could be an option.
Another CB who’s name comes up a fair bit, Upamecano.
Pavon will or should come onto club radars again this summer.
Fekir, I expect he’ll move to a big club this summer, allot of clubs will be looking at him.
I am not keen on Pepe’s preference in cutting inside, instead of racing against his marker. Prefer a tireless winger like Lozano or the one that likes to challenge the opponent like Mbappe/ Hazard/ Messi/ Neymar
Pavon, Guedes, Draxler, Martins, Fekir and Brandt were not good in World Cup, so I hope Arsenal would gamble on other wingers or on Nelson
I think someone cutting inside will fit Emeryball than a winger that sticks to the line and looks to whip in crosses.
Emery likes his fullbacks to push forward and act as wingers, this can be seen in his previous teams and the way he has used our inside forwards to be more of a goal threat.
If Pepe stays out wide while deep but cuts in to share the attacking/goal threat then it can be done with Bellerin overlapping and act as the winger…
Iwobi can cut in and be a goal thre… well, if Iwobi was a better shot then he would be a goal threat that cuts in from the left but also makes use of Kola who plays like a winger in the final third. Iwobi isn’t told to stretch the opposition, a winger would stay wide as part of that stretches the opposition, Kola does that on the left while Bellerin did do that on the right.
This also means our inside forwards can play between the lines better, not so out wide that the fullbacks cover them and not deep enough for the CM or advanced enough for the CB… unless the opposition players move and that then creates space for passing option.

It’s a myth that players won’t sign for a team not in the CL. Over the past couple of seasons both Man Utd and Chelsea have both signed top class players despite not being in the CL.
Decent article and I could see a lot of this happening (besides for landing Alderweireld, but I get the type of purchase you’re going for). Winger, CB, LB, and another CM would be a fantastic summer. I worry about our CB purchase. We’re monitoring Mathias Ginter and I just don’t think that’s bold enough of a buy. Literally for over a decade we’ve struggled to have a certifiably solid all around defender. Kos is the closest we’ve gotten to it. I don’t think Ginter is the answer.
Nobody will buy Ozil and be willing to pay his 350k fraudulent weekly wages.
I think we would be stuck with Ozil or have to share the burden of his weekly wages with what ever new club he moves to.

If reports about Ozil putting in extra effort at training is true, he still seems to care his career. So MAYBE he’d be willing to cut his wages to find a club where he can restart his career. He is 30 now and has to decide if he wants to make money and ride the bench until retirement or play football.

however, i am concerned about the fact that we have just one defensive midfielder in the person of Toriera, Guendozi is a CM and all the other midfielders link with arsenal are CMs, Arsenal should look at Ndidi of Leceiters, that guy has every thing to be successful, power, mobile, physique and a fighter, just a very underrated DM.

Brahimi from Porto will be a free agent come season end, but he is 29 now. Can he fit into EPL pace at such Age, and again, if we don’t have UCL football to offer, would he come to us? Remember how Gelson despite rumours linking him to Arsenal, ended up at Athletico.
I don’t think the likes of AMN will cut it for us. He hasn’t been convincing, more like a back up option, same as Iwobi. We need better younger options.

I would rather win 1 and lose the other by 10 – 0 than lose both games by 1 – 0 no matter how “respectful anyone thinks that is” (besides, arsenal didn’t lose ‘respectfully; 0 -2 at home and 3 – 1 away). Arsenal lost aggregate 5 -1 and Chelsea aggregate 6 -2, having trashed City 2 – 0 in the reverse fixture. I don’t know how anyone thinks Chelsea’s defeat makes Arsenal performance against City look good. Chelsea trashed them in the reverse fixture, I repeat, and the league is first about points before anything else.
The final scoreline was somewhat flattering
for Arsenal. If not for Lenos 2nd half
performance and City’s rather pedestrian
finishing it could have easily been 5 or 6.
Arsenal were definitely in the game and

I’d like us to be ambitious at the back and go for the best and the best is Koulibally. Add to the outgoings Iwobi, Xhaka & Micky and I think our budget will be sufficient to add him and maybe Doucoure.

The number is too much for us to loose in a summer. A whole 12 players in just 1 windows? To me, its unrealistic. Its not as if we can buy halve the number as a replacement.

I doubt we’ll let Monreal and Kos go. Thats too much squad trimming. Ospina, Jenkinson, mustafi, Elneny, Ozil are all possible. Cech, Ramsey, Licht, Welbz are all out of contract and all are 99% leaving. (Welbz the only chance of staying but don’t see why this would happen). So we might actually see up to Nine of our first team players gone.
Monreal is out of contract at the end of the season, we are in February, I feel like we would have given him an extension if we wanted to.
Koscielny might see his last year out with us, which would be ok, but it’s also possible that we let him go to France for his twilight years.
I think it would make sense to just Kos ride out his contract. He’s the veteran Arsenal player now and as we’re seeing still has performances left in him. I read somewhere that Arsenal activated a clause in Monreal’s contract that extended it an extra year. idk if this officially happened or was just a rumor though. If we have a top replacement lined up then we probably will let him go.

I love your comment ACE, and selling those players. I’m just wondering whos buying our castoffs? They haven’t impressed with us, so we have to consider selling for a loss just to move them on.
Secondly, I have no faith Kronke will upgrade after selling them on. IF we sell Mustafi, we still have Kos, Holding, Sokratis, and Mavroporas (who deserves a shot). Add Chambers as a DM / CB, and Kronke won’t see need for another CB.
We also extended Monreal, so doubt a LB also. AMN looks like he may be rotating with Bellerin at RB, so I’m pessimistic about any defensive additions.
I’m sure we’ll spend £35-45 for a winger, but with Iwobi and Mkhi, Nelson returning and Saka pushing, I think 1 solid winger is it. I’d be surprised with big budget not because we lack money, but rather Kronke sees bodies filling spots and cares little for quality.
Just my opinion; never managed or pulled off a single transfer.

points that I tend to agree with. All those
players I mentioned would be moved on
by any other club that was serious about
challenging for the top 4 or EPL title. Other
than an in form Ozil, would the likes of
Mustafi, Xhaka, El Neny, or Monreal start or
consistently feature for any of the current
top 4 sides? Heck they’d struggle to get in
to newly promoted Wolves first 11 atm.
Arsenal’s Europa ceiling has been defined by this collection of overrated, overpaid players
and if the club refuses to invest heavily on
upgrades than I’d prefer Raul and Emery to move them along at even at a loss and use
whatever funds generated to possibly acquire
a few more Guendouzi’s.
As I mentioned in another thread it’s way past time IMHO for Arsenal to turn toward the
youth movement and start bleeding some
of there most promising academy products.

Hoping top top winger coming in Summer, and have Iwobi, Nelson, Mhki, and promote Saka as backup. Lastly rather see AMN in midfield than Suarez, and Chambers can rotate with Torreria as DM.
I suspect Kronke will only fill holes, equate numbers with quality to avoid spending, and pocket all the recouped wages rather than reinvesting in the team.
Not being pessimistic, but rather realistic. It will take massive invest for us to catch up, and Kronke plays the long game, not quick turn arounds.
Only look at us over the last decade even with the new stadium. Took Rams 15 years, and they’re still not there. NBA nuggets still lagging too; not a single Kronke club competing year in amd year out. That says everything, despite Josh and Stan spewing their nonsense.

I’d like to add Pleg from the U23 to that list, he has looked good the times I’ve seen him and he is about the right age to be pushing for 1st team action… Or leave to do so.
Midkemma I don’t think Kronke will free up the funds for CB. I’m sure Emery wants one like Wenger did; but on limited budget and both attacking managers, they’ll spend limited funds on attacking players.
By the by, Holding for £2 million is better than Guendouzi for £9 million in my opinion. Not a slight on Guendouzi, just grateful 2 cheap transfers seems to be working out well.

dont rate the Barca man, but the Spanish
gaffer does have the propensity to seek
out former players that thrived under his

ANN and CC featuring prominently in
midfield with Torreria and Guendouzi. Although if Emery somehow convinces Rabiot to settle in North London I could
see AMN sadly either loaned out or
moved permantently to the RB position
to compete with HB.

The difference between those two matches is Leno. Without him we could have conceded 6 or more. If you had watched our match with open mind you would have noticed that. Both us and Chelsea played woefully as if we went into the match without game plan. The fact that Chelsea lost 6-0 does justified our performance.

Yup, remember how much the pundits bring up City beating Liverpool 5-0 just last season? Oh wait, they’ve never uttered a word since it happened. Media likes to make out like we are the only team who ever suffers heavy defeats. 6-0 and a possible Sarri sacking will be hard to forget though

One thing I’ll say about Arsenal players is that they have never in their direst moments, “downed tools” on the job.
It’s more our fault than Carragher’s. We all know our defense is rubbish, so why seem surprised when Carragher equates it to poor Chelsea performance?
We have conceded many many goals, can’t even get a clean sheet against worst PL club struggling for goals. In fact, clean sheets for us are about as rare as Unicorns.
Carragher is only pointing out the obvious; don’t like it then play defense.
Yes Eddie, very true. What I don’t really get is the inferiority complex others have on here though regarding the pundits and media. Sarri and Chelsea have been getting pelters fairly recently, spurs are being constantly lambasted not only by the press but also their own fans regarding their failure to be able to play in their new toilet bowl. West Ham’s horrible racist fans, Everton’s mob doing a lot of fighting recently etc, etc. Unfortunately as you just mentioned, the digs we are getting are embarrassingly honest.
Chelsea won the title two seasons ago and have a very good squad excluding striker position. They are not like us and in typical Chelsea fashion they will just sack Sarri and go on a spending spree. Carragher just wants to say something for the headlines.
I’m not convinced Rudiger and Luis are an EPL
winning partnership at CB. They have been
culpable for 10 goals in the last 2 away fixtures,
both history making defeats.
And more critically Sarri SHOULD BE FIRED for
his displacing of the leagues best CDM in
Kante and subsequent refusal to bench his
catastrophic replacement Jorginho.
Hazard, Kante, Hudson Odoi and Loftus Cheek(Youth) are the only players I rate.
Truth is we get the stick more because we turned this club into a joke, the mentality in the club is a weak one so Bigger clubs, Pundits, and even fans tend to bully us and insult us at the slightest chance they get. As hurting as it is, it’s the truth, and unlike Chelsea, we are ain’t gon spend millions to fix our flaws.
We all love this club and if you take your time to assess the state we are left in, you’ll be knocking in the doors of depression.
What we need is a new and ambitious owner, hell what I’d do to love an oil rich owner like City to come fix and replace this mediocre squad

A well thought through article overall Jim, with much food for thought. I like your general idea of what the club are TRYING to do, whilst being constantly held back by Kroenkes dreadful and morally bankrupt ownership. Personally , my first thought is that we ALL should be thoroughly thankful that we personally are not empty shells of humans ,as Kroenke is. THAT alone, in lifes great plan, is FAR more important than ANY mere football matter. If I am being too profound for anyone on here , then please disregard that comment completely but do please read on.
In Sanllehi, I do think we have a true football professional to replace the disastous and also morally bankrupt Gazidis, whose complete unfitness to run our club is now being widely recognised by most Gooners. Let us rejoice that he finally left!
Kroenke(and Josh)) apart, I do totally believe that the club is being run by realists and proper professionals – I exclude the other members of the long time board, who are just deadwood, as time servers and yesterdays men , with no real role to play; I refer to “Sir” Chips (Arrogance personified) Keswick and those other Dickensian buffoons of his type.
We fans need to accept that to massively change our fortunes , given the KROENKE poison we suck up daily, will take some real time. Nothing can fundamentally change overnight. That we lie ONE point off fourth place – and quite possibly actually IN fourth place, after ours and Man Utds next Prem fixture – going into March, is imo little short of a football miracle. I realise it has become the norm, to some on here , to criticise and severly question Emery. You will not find me among that number, quite the reverse. Our squad is far, far lower in quality than both Uniteds and Chelseas, yet we are virtually level with both. As an ARCH realist, I FULLY recognise what an ACHIEVEMENT THAT IS. And this, despite our injury crisis too! PERSPECTIVE, YOU SEE!
I do Jim, take issue with some of your hopes for next seasons squad; NOT your choices, which I mostly like, but the likelihood of them all happening. I see no possibility at all of us landing Alderweirald, which is to me just a desirable fantasy. Nor do I think we will get a fee for Ozil, given the wage any new club will take on. I DO think we will shift him, BUT also believe it far more likely we will have to continue to cover SOME part of his wage , to achieve this necessary sale. I also see little chance of Rabiot , given the interest in him by our main rivals, who can outbid his wage, even though he seems to be available on a free. Elneny was poor value even at “only” £ 5 mill, and we will be very fortunate to make even a penny profit on him. Either way , he MUST go!

Most sensible Arsenal fans would agree with the “clearance” sales you suggest but like the High Street sometimes you just can’t give away surplus stock because like Mustafi nobody would want it and in the case of Ozil, it is overpriced.
I have been an Arsenal for a very long time and very concerned about Unai Emery’s handling of Mesut Ozil and the creativity of the team. From news stories, the Manager messed up same way at PSG picking on some players and bringing in wrong players for non-footballing reasons. I observe that Arsenal’s creativity has gone down since his Ozill was shut out by Emery, and for an example, at Huddersfield we lost possession to the other team. Ozil is better than Dennis Suarez by all standards, and the Manager needs to know that his decisions should make football sense instead of satisfying his personal ego. Attack is a form of defense and Arsenal has suddenly began to look worse in the last five games. The team is not playing better with the daft shutting out of Ozil.

Firstly, Koscielny is better then any united centre back. Secondly I think he has more fight in him then any of the Chelsea centre backs.
Koscielny Said himself this is likely his last season, but he was injured when he said it and arsenal had a new manager.
If he leaves the club it is because of his choice, not arsenal because I think they want to keep him.
Monreal is a last minute call I feel on what’s decided.
But selling 5 players is going to take time. Time is the ingredient we have to consider the most. Not fees, not interest, not negotiation but time.
The most likely or best they can do If arsenal want to sell ozil and mustafi is the following,
Ozil to turkey is very most likely of all the choices. Ozil back to Germany after the racial spat means he needs to go Germany and perform. If he is not doing it here and feels let down, then maybe he might do it in Germany. But turkey is possible if one of the big boys struggling his year want to make a statement. But again he has to go and perform. He won’t get the salary but he will be adored there.

Mustafi back to Italy might do the trick. And gazidas as Milan might be helpful. The worst case is we loan him for the season to a German team like F.C. leizig could work – with a view of a purchase of €18m. €15m if they sign him up early in his loan spell like in January.

Rabiot I am liking more and more because he is free, we can double his current salary to £120,000, he can play in the deep position or one of the 2 just in front, and he is 23 years old.

JimBeam, sorry to potentially burst your bubble but have you considered that the £40-£50m figure being banded about as being available for transfers may already include profits from the players Arsenal are planning to sell? What makes you think that any player sale would add extra to that number?
Although Emery is doing his best to force Ozil out this summer (not even in the squad for Huddlesfield!), I just can’t see anyone buying him.
Arsenal seem to have the same problem they had under Wenger, they are in danger of playing `the beautiful game` at the cost of losing it. The stats on the Europa game gave the Gunners 76% possession plus advantages in set pieces yet we come away with our tail between our legs. WHY?
The Arsenal style of football is, `the passing game`, the more the passes the greater the chance of error and, after we`ve stuffed it up enough, we start to lose concentration and with it confidence. We have to learn to play in the opponents half of the field and once there attack the goal with the minimum amount of passes. This is where we need players of individual talent, at least three top finishers to put icing on the cake.
