How dangerous are Napoli away from home in European competition?

It would be a mistake to assume that Napoli are poor when they play away from home in Europe, they are not, they are not brilliant either but have got a positive result 58% over the last six years.

Yes, they have been poor in the Champions League away from home over the last couple of seasons but their overall record since October 2013 has not been that bad.

They have played 31 games away in that period and in 18 of those games they did not lose.

That tells you that they have lost 13 games and a couple have been shockers, as an example losing to Shakhtar Donetsk last season and drawing away to Crvena Zvezda earlier this season, however it is a different ball game in the Europa League.

Napoli did lose to Salzburg last time out but that game was basically a dead rubber, and over their last 15 away games in the Europa League, they have lost just five from 16.

Napoli European away record since October 2013

Europa League

Played 16 Won 8 Drawn 3 Lost 5

Champions League

Played 15 Won 4 Drawn 3 Lost 8

Total

Played 31 Won 12 Drawn 6 Lost 13

It should also be noted that they were unlucky to lose 1-0 at Anfield and got a draw at PSG in this seasons Champions League.

We are, of course, the favourites, our home record is formidable but Napoli is not Vorskla, Qarabağ, BATE or Rennes, teams that we have beaten at home this season in the Europa League.

I am convinced that if we play against Napoli as we have against Tottenham, Chelsea and Man Utd at the Emirates we will win but have to accept that we are playing a top team and we must be at our best or we could end up with a whole heap of regret.

Napoli are not formidable on the road but neither are they weak and the stats back that up.

Don’t expect an easy game….

  1. Everyone is going on but playing a full attacking team my problem is Czech we must not concede a goal or worse 2 have no confidence in him whatsoever should play Leno sentiment does not come into it at this level of the competition

    1. Czech the entire country in our goal. O bet we would still find a way of conceding lol. . .I joke

I just hope for a positive end to the season. I don’t really see us winning the cup or even getting past Napoli. We are so unpredictable as always I guess that’s the Arsenal way

  2. Don’t expect easy treatment from the Serie A runner up, especially when Arsenal midfielders are not skillful enough to control the game

Ozil tends to leave his post as no 10 to release himself from the opposition’s defenders and drops back to help the DMs. But the team lose the pressure in the front because the midfielders leave the striker alone

To pressurize the opposition’s defenders, Emery had better uses two wide forwards with a CAM/ false nine behind them. I wish to see Iwobi in that position again one day

    1. I too wish to see Iwobi playing as an attacking CAM and if you want to see him every week get yourself a season ticket at Brentford and your dream will come true sooner than you think

      1. Phil, Just curious as to which of our personal bette noires(despised players) IWOBI FOR YOU PRESUMABLY, AND CERTAINLY WALCOTT for me, would get the most fan agreement on here, IF we asked OTHER Gooners. I am also among Iwobis least favourite rating Gooners BUT he does at least TRY, which is more than Walcott could ever be arsed to do. What do you reckon?

        1. Jon -I get your dislike for Walcott.Im not sure he didn’t try but he should have tried so much harder. He COULD have been a good player (no more than that) but he will be one of the many who will realise when his career is over that he should have done so much better than he did.He has a bit of everything.Pace was frightening.Scored and made goals.Won games for us.But everything was all too laid back and casual about him when he could have been up there with the better performers in the team.
Certainly not missed at Arsenal and has now found his true level in the game which is s bench player for a second tier Everton team.

  3. Just saw a clip of Ozil’s first goal for us, against Napoli… what a beauty! Hope he does it again tomorrow! COYG

So the spuds have a new chant about watching Tottenham on a Tuesday night & you play Thursday because you’re f*****g s***e ?

    1. You set yourself up for disappointment. I can’t believe I just said. How many times have we believe that this bunch will get it right next time only to fail us. How many times have they said they will make it up next time only to just show up for just their weekly pay. If they can’t be motivated by qualification for cl and finish above Spurs I don’t believe they have it in them to beat Napoli. We had 75mins to get a point on Sunday but Emery believed our defenders passing ball among themselves we get a goal. No desire, no purpose no positioning play nothing to show for we want cl badly. I have decided not to get my hope so high before the game and do that when the game is on and I have seen the Arsenal that shows up. Sorry I’m still very angry at Saturday lineup and performance. We could have been in 3rd but now in 5th

        1. Mobella, keep the faith fellow gooner.
The everton game came after some excellent performances and I fully expect a good win tomorrow.
Of course it depends on the injuries, team picked and tactics played…but apart from those minor details, what on earth could go wrong?

  4. I don’t know if am the only one who’s been bothered by our away form all season . I took my time and did some research on Emery, he actually has a problem with beating teams away from home . I am not trying to criticize him here; he is sure a very talented coach who still has a lot of learning to do.

You all remember how he ****d Barcelona up ? Now he sent to their camp nou and messed things up. I think he should learn more from Klopp. Well I don’t want to judge him just yet, simply because am only trying to convince myself that it’s because he hasn’t brought his own players in just yet. I will give my verdict on him after next season. I would be mad if we cannot get pass Napoli for real. He should stick to the winning formula and we are good to go.

I understand he rested players for the Napoli game, so am not complaint about the Everton loss. You all forget we have watford this weekend. Emery knows that, we needed to lose so the players could get their guts together. They were already getting ahead of themselves like they usually do, they forget the needful and **** things up. The Everton loss actually did more good than harm. I believe in Emery, but he really needs to stop that defensive mindset he brings when we play away. He should not be afraid to play the Arsenal way, that is the only solution I see to us winning this Europa league.
