How Emery can improve Arsenal’s 3 at the back formation

EMERY MIGHT HAVE TO DITCH XHAKA by Nicholas Oyoo

Against Bournemouth Unia Emery adopted the three at the back and a 3.4.3 system. Arsenal are back to winning ways though it wasn’t pretty. He played with wingbacks Bellerin and Kolasinac and Holding, Sokratis and Mustafi were the 3-CEB defense. Mkhitaryan was on the right wing and Iwobi was left wing. We had the regular in the central midfield – Torreira and Xhaka and Aubameyang was the lone striker. There was no Ozil and Lacazette. Lacazette may have been out injured which would perhaps suggest that when he is back, Aubameyang may be the one to move left and Mhkitaryan goes back to the bench.

Clearly, Emery is bold, unpredictable and does not fear taking a calculated risk. For me this is a step in the right direction and now that we are back to winning way just in time to meet up with the toughest challenge in the next two premier league matches with Tottenham and Manchester United coming up. If Arsenal pull out of these two matches as winners, the credentials of the team will hit a new high and the top four ambitions will be well claimed.

3.3.1.3 could be the best system for Arsenal to finally take off from the first whistle to the end. With Aubameyang as the left forward, Iwobi, the right forward and Lacazette at the centre would mean pinning of the opposition back to their defense with hard working wings. Xhaka would give way to Ozil, I’m not sure why he would not handle the ‘Intensity’ of the match yet he is world class player. I think that was more to do with balance of the team.

——Iwobi—-Lacazette—Aubameyang—
—————Ozil————————
Guendouzi—–Torreira—-Bellerin/AMN
—-Holding——–Sokratis———Mustafi
———————–Leno————————

Is this the Arsenal that will cage the Tottenham and Manchester United and put Arsenal to touching distance of the leading two teams?

  1. Nicholas Oyoo you have the back for putting out formations that can’t work in the real world, Guendozi will have to keep Orchestrating play from the midfield while supporting Torreria in his duties? and at same time playing LWB during the match? First of all that formation will leave our midfield exposed, Xhaka ain’t the best but you have to play alongside Torreria, or Guendozi along Torreria. No sense in playing with 3 CBs and 3Midfieders with only one RB who’ll play RWB.
This formation is unreal, hell even some teams would whoop your ass on football manager if you use this formation

  2. OT: Yesterday’s Aubameyang goal was his 20th Premier League strike for the club since signing from Borussia Dortmund in a £60million deal in January.

Incredibly, Aubameyang has reached the 20-goal landmark in NINE games fewer than the players who have more goals for the club than anyone else.

Thierry Henry – who netted 228 in all competitions – and Ian Wright (185) needed 40 PL games before they hit the back of the net 20 times

  3. Tactical flexibility is now the core feature for teams in the EPL. For the likes of City who can play a straight out 4 3 3 or Liverpool, the execution is straightforward when you have the personal.

Arsenal don’t have the players to achieve the results unai wants for his preferred style. Which in itself is pleasing as he is working hard with adapting tactics to current players.
Yesterday we went with a system to adapt to Bournemouth.
Granted we looked shaky and unsure how to play the system without feeling like we should naturally go back to usual methods. Grafting out a result was the most rewarding element from an arsenal team who usually falter.

I still feel from attack we need wingers who want to get in behind and equally want to come in and make a 2 forward set up whilst our CF drops to recieve the ball (allowing wing backs to overlap). This does leave the question of what role Ozil plays as ideally he would want to be the play maker…

At the moment it’s robust, mechanical and predictable (but getting results).

Clearly we have a manager who is tactically very smart and can advise the team and make the changes we need for better 2nd half performances. This is nice to see. But whether we play 4 3 3 or 3 3 1 3 or 4 5 1… its currently down to looking at tactically the opponents threat as much as adapting our ideas within the system.

  4. Plain daft formation you propose. Unbalanced and you CANNOT play Xhaka with Torreira and Guendouzi. Best never to play Xhaka ever again by choice. Fortunately our manager will take no notice of your silly line up. You have form for possting daft and, derided by others, silly formations. Why not get real instead?

  5. OT:
This 17 consecutive games (11 EPL) unbeaten is deceiving. Imagine with all the hype, we are only 2 points better than last Season same time.

    1. Yip you are right, but you know what, we have a new manager with 0 experience in the PL before 4 months ago.

Yes stats wise we not so different from last year this time, but remember we lost to teams like Bournemouth last season.

So lets keep judgement for the end of the season, but lets keep inspiring the team with our positive attitude.

This is just the first season and first 13 games, we can only improve on this.

  6. Oyoo, you have posted the same formation several weeks ago. It’s useless to discuss such vulnerable formation

Three CBs at the back and two wingbacks were powerful when nobody knew how to counter the tactic. Conte surprised his opponents when he used it in his first season, because it was not popular in EPL

Even Wenger took the advantage of using the 3-4-2-1 two seasons ago, but everything changed since last season and Conte/ Wenger got sacked (presumably). My suggestion is just increase the quality of the players, which could be a difficult task, because some underperforming stars are under long-term contracts

  7. Emery felt obliged to play a back three yesterday due to the injury to Monreal. He does not rate Kolasinac as a conventional left back where his deficiencies are shown up but he is less damaging as a wing back. This highlights the need for a top class left back asap.I feel Emery will revert to a flat back four whenever Monreal is fully fit.He should do for two reasons.First of all all the top European sides like Barca and Man City play a flat back four.Secondly, as we lack quality centre backs, why would you compound the situation by playing three when you can limit the “damage” by deploying only two.If we play three centre backs against Spurs we are asking for trouble as they will over run us in midfield as our average centre backs (Holding excepted) will lie too deep to counter Spurs pressing game.A four ,three , three system is the way for us to make real progress.

    1. Good comments. Our CB’s are way substandard for our top four or better ambitions. Actually I feel we need an entire better outfield defence. Holding is the best CB we have right now but he is still well short of what we need. He may improve further but right now he is still not remotely in the class of the other top teams CB’s. As ever, I am just being realistic; so many cannot stand the truth about our players weaknesses and seem to take it as a personal insult. God knows why!

  8. It’s perfectly wise to use it once in a while.
Emery knows what he is doing
    It worked fine.

Compared to Wenger, Emery Is a master tactician

We desperately need defensive upgrades. I hope we get a better CB in January.
We are so average in our defensive line

  9. Arsenal played like the last Era of wenger yesterday, I can still see Wenger’s virus in some players, starting from the back, I guess we have sought the goalkeeping area for the main time, at least Leno is put on a great performance so far, but our back lines is nothing to write home about, I think is time to forget Monreal, with his injuries reoccurring I guess he’s a lost cost, A new left back in Jan in the like of junior firpo of real betis, A world class CB to pair Rob Holding cause the guy is the future, Sokratis and maybe Kolcieny if he stays to be replacement for our CB, the RB position is still manageable rill season ends, Additional Midfielders who is good on take-ons, Xhaka should be a squad player, he’s not good enough to be a starter, he’s a liability, only good at side ways and pin point passes, he will be always lost when we are under pressure because of his inability to make tackles. One or two pacy winger in Jan. Sell mickhi as soon as possible.

  10. Iwobi is not good on the right.
    Aubameyang struggles as a LW.

    A 433 formation fits better
    ………..Leno
    Bellerin.Sokratis.Holding.Kolasinac
    ….Guendouzi.Torreira.Xhaka
    Niles. Aubameyang. Iwobi
