How far away is Mikel Arteta from challenging Man City and Liverpool for the title?

Arsenal has underachieved for a number of years now and this campaign seems to be one of the worst seasons in many a year.

After finally getting rid of Arsene Wenger, the Gunners have struggled under the likes of Unai Emery and Freddie Ljungberg, but they appear to be recovering under Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has made us competitive again, and it seems unfortunate that it is at a time that we are looking to save costs and we might not be spending well enough in the summer.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp struggled in their first campaigns in England and the two of them have shown differing ways of achieving success in the English game.

The Pep Guardiola way is to go out and buy a top player in every position that you need reinforcements, the Klopp way is to systematically build your team by signing the players that you need one at a time until you have your dream team.

I think that Arsenal can challenge those two England heavyweights for the title if they can borrow a leaf from their books.

If we want quick success, then we can open up the chequebook and sign all the top players for the position that Arteta has already identified.

We can also decide to take our time and sign one top player per transfer window until we have the complete team that we need.

With that in mind, I believe that we are closer to competing with Liverpool and Manchester City, we just have to choose our preferred route to success and stick to it.

  1. At Dreamers Field we’ll beat’em all! But of course, if the Kroenkes let us close five or six major signings… Sometimes 2021/22, or so.

  2. Arsenal trying to get to the same level as Liverpool and City? City are struggling to get to the same level as Liverpool, they are 25 points behind!

  3. Both City and Pool will soon be over the hill (I think City already is), with aging squads, ex-players that they want us to buy from them, so we have something to bury at Ashburton Cem.

  4. Arsenal are a million miles away from the top 2 sides (City and Liverpool). Financially we are close to skint after spending big. Our team is not at the right level physically or technically to challenge in the top flight. You might as well be asking “How long is a piece of string?”

  5. I personally would like to see the Arsenal Board to support Mikel Arteta to build a team by buying up and coming players like Eduard from Celtic (funded by the sale of Aubameyang), Max Aaron’s (funded by selling super model Bellerin) and a top class DM like Ndidi of Leicester or Tonali of Brescia.
Such players can be developed as a team for both current improvement and future success; however the important thing is that Arteta is supported to bring in and transfer out the players HE WANTS, otherwise he will suffer the same fate as Unai Emery.

  6. Can any team /coach compete for titles when you have – Leno (assured blunder when other 10 have behaved themselves), Belerin (that cat walk guy), Mustafi (error any moment), Socrates (wrestling legend), Kolasinac (better not speak), Xhaka (guaranteed foul leading to goal), Torrera (rolling stone), Ozil (oh it’s everybody else’s fault, even blame the physio he has to crawl for the substitution), Auba (wasted on the left), Laca (needs binoculars to spot the goal posts) Pepe (Gervinho follower?)
Mikel needs to be assertive and stop being loyal to players who do not care a damn for him or the club.

    1. Loose Cannon, You really cracked me up with that your Ozil,(oh it’s everybody else’s fault, even blame the physio he has to crawl for the substitution)

  7. Arteta cannot do it because he still believes in players like Ozil, Xhaka and Mustafi. He’ll be fired before he gets there

    1. Where do you get this from? All 3 of those players enhanced their play under Arteta’s SHORT tenure, and it’s not like the manager had a choice to not play these guys he inherited. You’re already condemning the guy who did nothing but show promise. Ugh! You negative lot 🤦‍♂️

    2. To be clear, we’re Certainly better off as soon as we get those 3 off the books. I just don’t understand the condemnation of Arteta when all he’s shown is promise…
