Is Chambers going to be Arsenal’s backup to Torreira?

Arsenal have bought two new midfielders in Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, but our new boss Unai Emery decided to use Calum Chambers in that position during his 45 minutes at Boreham Wood.

Chambers, who has just signed a contract extension with the Gunners, is certainly defensively-minded and was quite impressive as central defender during the closing stages of last season, so if put in midfield would certainly be the extra-defender when needed. Chambers himself seemed pleased with the idea. “It’s a new one for me!” the 23 year-old told Arsenal.com. “I played there a little bit growing up. It’s a position i feel like I can grow to enjoy and out there today I felt good, I just need to train and practice in games in that position to get comfortable.

“It’s an important position. If you can get on the ball, turn and break their lines then it kills their press, so I think it’s an important position and anyone who’s playing in there needs to learn how to do that. Obviously you can’t do it all the time, you can’t take risks and when it’s not on you can bounce it backwards at an angle for someone else to play through the lines. But if you can get on it and you have time and it’s not a risk, turn and play forward and that’s the best way to get through a press.”

Emery obviously rates Chambers in that position, so I think we will see him start there during our Europa League games, and perhaps it will suit him so well that he could help out when Torreira needs a rest in the League.

What do you think?

  1. If he{Chambers} can learn from Torreira and make M.Verratti his role model, believe me chambers will arguably improve.

  2. Chambers will not succeed at Arsenal he is nowhere near good enough. he wouldn’t get into any other top 5 team.

      1. Chambers has been here since 2014…One half of a season in an absolute joke of a defence which led us to a 6th place finish doesn’t make him a good player.

There’s better in the market (which hasn’t closed) buy someone else

    1. That is a ridiculous statement to make about a 23 year old player who still has 15 years of footballing career ahead of him. Do you ever think Stone will end up with man city or van dyke in Liverpool or Jones in manu or Cahill in Chelsea. These players i mentioned with exception of Van D are English and just like them what Chambers need is one excellent season and media hype and boom he is in anyone of these club. Or he finishes with arsenal this season in 1st to 5th.

  3. I hope not, i don’t see it. I am not totally convinced of him as a center back let alone a defensive midfielder.

    1. He’s not that good and I don’t think anyone here would be shocked if he doesn’t make it.My worry is why we keep dithering or worrying ourselves over youngsters who do not have massive potential.

      1. Sup bro. Gazidis to Milan..wat do u knw abt tht, and wats ur take on tht. Also u been too quite on them transferes, wat hppnd to soyuncu?

  4. From reading what Chambers himself said its clear the coaching staff have been working with him on understanding this role or he has been doing research himself.

Most fans were calling for Wenger to try him out at DM, lets see how he performs against Athletico. He might offer us that much needed energy and physical presence in midfield, he can be play with Lucas T, AMN or Ramsey too minus unbalancing the team. Xhaka and Elneny better up their game.

Early indications are that players are working hard and trying to impress the new regime, long may this continue and let players earn their pay from henceforth.

Interested to see what Unai does with Reine, Jenkinson, Martinez, and Cohen.

  5. Yes I agree, Chambers played well towards the end of last season and is very assured on the ball. It was only the Wood on Saturday but he was calm and desciplined with his DM performance. Guendouzi will be the B to B star though and possibly even this season.

  6. I have changed my opinion on Chambers. Finally, late last seasson, I saw huge progress and his committment in defence has never been in doubt- unlike certain others – . If Emery thinks he may prove to be a good CDM, and as yet it is only a new experiment, then that is good enough for me. I have every faith in Emery; I think he has made a wonderful start and totally changed the stale, backward sliding ethos of a club that was remorselessly sliding away from the top strata, in league position , though NOT fame and world wide support. Those matters are clearly in the past now and a fresh exciting youthful team hold sway in team matters. Now, we need to do the same with the Dickensian board, esp Chips” sod the fans” Keswick!

  7. Is it for the long term or because Emery will want a DM for the opening day and it’ll be advantageous for Emery to have a CB who can work with the DMs closer due to better understanding of the role?

I honestly believe that Monreal became a better LB after spending time at CB, he had played at CB and gained experience at what was beneficial for the CB, he doesn’t leave the CB as exposed anymore (not perfect but he is a good LB).

So if Chambers plays a bit as a DM he will then gain a better understanding of what will be positive and negative for the DM, he will be able to cover the DM better which should (hopefully) lead to us having a tighter defense.

I do think Wenger was right in playing players in roles around what the player was going to end up as, I just feel he dithered too much at the end and that dithering was only getting worse. Vieira knew what a DM needed and look how well he worked with Gilberto. TH14 played as a LW and look how he and Pires worked, TH14 experience was clearly on display (to my enjoyment).
Chambers knows RB, he is getting understanding at DM, those two roles will be the roles directly next to him as a right CB.

  8. Chambers is not that good. You can coach a player but you cannot instil talent inside that player.
I don’t know the sudden love for Callum Chambers and I don’t blame fans because he’s being talked about and praised relative to what we have.
He has talent but I’m sorry to say people are expecting too much from him.I’ve watched him countless times like most of you here and I don’t think he’d ever be world as a CB not will he ever be a good DM.Im sorry to say but that’s the truth.

    1. Calum Chambers is such a mug, he has represented England at U17, U19 and U21 level and has 3 full international caps.

    2. It isn’t sudden love, well, maybe some people but many have been impressed with him after his loan to ‘Boro.

One of Chambers biggest issues was Wenger, he was never the best coach to bring the best out of CBs but he got worse as the years went by, this has hurt not only Chambers but all our young defenders. Holding came in and looked like the bargain of the century, “Sorry he didn’t cost £50 million” and after a while training at Arsenal he started to suffer confidence issues and didn’t look as assured as he did initially. Bellerin replaced Debuchy and looked like a player who would become the best RB in the world… then he dropped off and some people are calling for him to be sold, even though he is still young and did show massive potential.

Chambers, Holding and Bellerin… 3 players I have used as an example and all def players, all been let down by the ex managers inability to train defenders in defending. All 3 are considered HG as well.

While you MAY be right, I find what you are saying to be… Lacking the consideration of the faults of our ex manager and the effect it has had on our teams defensive players.

      1. “Wenger was never the best coach to bring the best out of CB’s”. Whilst firmly agreeing, I MUST point out that THIS is the biggest understatement of all time in football. Put more accurately and succinctly, it would read “Wenger was by FAR the poorest judge of a CB ever.” I am only writing the plain truth as I dislike halfhearted statements.

  9. Would like to see Krysten Bielik as a defensive midfielder. He is 20 now. I hope he has improved since we got him

  10. I like chambers has a good attitude and a football brain.not sure if he will cut it as arsenal DM in the near future as he lacks speed.but if unai thinks he can then I am willing to support the move…..still think we should have kept Wilshire
