Is Sokratis set to be Arsenal’s first summer signing?

If there is no smoke without fire then the constant Arsenal rumours linking us with the centre-back Sokratis must have some basis is fact. And because the Greek international currently plays at Borussia Dortmund, which is Sven Mislintat’s old hunting ground, it sounds over more believable every day.

Now the German Sportspaper Bild have got in on the act and are stating that the Gunners are going to pay 20 million euros for the defender, and give him a two year contract due to his age. They also report that Dortmund have already sourced his replacement in Abdou Diallo from Mainz and once that deal is secured Sokratis can then join Arsenal.

FROM BILD (translated by Google!): Defense boss Sokratis (29 / contract until 2019) apparently starts! The Greek is likely to switch to the island to Arsenal London, should have a two-year offer. Transfer fee: about 20 million euros. Dortmund is already aiming for a successor …

I for one would welcome his arrival as we certainly need to try and boost our back line urgently. There will obviously have to be many more comings and goings this summer, but getting Sokratis would be a good start, especially as Koscielny is going to on the treatment table for many more months….

  1. I like our setting now. There seems to be no problem in recruitment department. Am sure before we go on pre season the team will be complete.
Fans have faith and don’t criticise unjustly. Everything must not be what you want. Wenger is gone. Let’s look hopefully into the future. Who ever comes as a manager should first be supported until he proves himself incapable. Don’t predict doom and bring down morales from the beginning. But am sure even Arteta will move the club forward from where we are now.
Chelsea won the FA cup and their fans are jubilating. The press give them credit as if they won CL. Yet they finished 5th. If it were to be Arsenal, the fan base will count it as nothing and the press will say FA cup is no trophy.
    Fans, support the club.

    1. @Godswill.
      If Arteta becomes manager
      then Wenger has not gone.
Arteta is simply a Wenger stooge.
Ramsey will be next, first Captain then Manager.
      Arsene FC for ever. 🙁

      1. Disagree – Arteta is not wenger and wenger was the most pains to have around there was no way you were going to change what he belived and solution was just terminate his contract and we will be taking a new direction Arteta will be great he just needs good and quality players to be brought in not wenger who was insisting on having players like Walcott and expect some day he will be Messi!

    2. But one crucial difference between us over the last decade and Chelsea under Conte, is that Chelsea have a manager who understands the vital need for a proper defence and coaches it extremely well. This IS the reason they beat United yesterday. United had a better team on paper but Chelsea CAN defend. We can’t, though I am optimistic things will improve now we have a coach, even though he has never managed. ( I have accepted that Arteta WILL be our manager, even though I wanted an experienced one and already proven.)

  2. how can that rumours says that we are to sign socratis? what if the player will not be in the new managers plan? and who is after the signing? – gooner = forever

    1. The new regime will work more like the continental model. Players are not recruited by the manager but of course he will have a say. As to your question, what if the new manager doesn’t like the players already here?

  3. I loved it that man utd lost the Fa cup.

alexis sanchez.”i left arsenal to win trophies.”

    idiot.

    1. Actually , I had hoped for an earthquake, confined to Wembleys pitch that swallowed both teams and made this seasons FA Cup null and void. But as someone HAD TO WIN, I was at least pleased for Giroud and it was good to see Moaninho look sullen and also Sanchez lose. Also our 13 times as winners remains unique.

      1. That would have suited me too Jon, but we can’t have everything! Yes I loved that smacked arse look on Maureen’s face…. and my heart bled for Sanchez as he didn’t win the cup… not!! ????

  4. It’s true he has signed a 2 year contract with a 1 year option to extend. It will be announced soon

  5. I think if we’re serious about fixing our backline then we need to go all out as Liverpool did and get a quality CB Koulibaly springs to mind and yes it will it will take a mammoth bid but you get what you pay for! I’m not crazy on Sokratis tbh almost 30 is he even that good ? The pace of the premier league can take time to adapt and Sokratis would need to hit the ground running! It seems to me like a cheap panic buy but who knows.. what about the kid from Ajax that everyone is raving about De Ligt yes he’s only 18 but if he’s good enough he’s old enough! Tarkowski ? He knows the premier league, he can defend, has to be an upgrade on Mustafi who’s just plain useless but I’m not too sure on the 2 we’re rumoured to be signing especially the Turkish kid from Freiburg didn’t they finish 15th ? Gazidis wants arsenal to continue their free flowing football so maybe he wants us to continue playing kamikaze football as it sells more tickets than a pragmatic team I doubt he cares too much that we concede goals for fun as long as we continue to be profitable .. I don’t believe anyone is naive enough to believe his main aim is for Arsenal to challenge for trophies, his only priority is money and sponsorship deals and if we happen to win the odd fa cup that’s just an extra bonus.

    1. We need experienced defenders to help bring our younger trio of defenders to the level we need them in the premier, we don’t need an untested 18yr old.

      1. We don’t really need an untested 21 year old either but what we need and we’ll get is 2 different things buddy! Arsenal have needed a DM since Gilberto Silva and still waiting on his replacement

    2. Of course it COULD be that Gazidis hs actually BECOME a true Gooner and now loves the club. To quote Harry Hill, “What are the chances of that happening!” It could ALSO be that I will be the next Pope and that is far more likely, DESPITE ME NOT EVEN BEING A CATHOLIC!

  6. Am already looking forward to next season knowing that Wenger is gone for good, so now our season will be hard to predict not like past season’s, now everything can happen and that’s what make it even sweeter.

  7. Sokratis?its just laughable, he was very poor in a low paced league like the bndesliga and u think he will be great in a tougher league like the epl? Dude never had the positional sense of bfg,@ 30 years and daz what we need?

    1. at uchman low paced bundesliga ?,do you watch the games there ? bayern, dortmund,to mench a few

  8. Don’t buy any one.
    Outside the Emirates is
    a sign which reads
“We don’t buy stars we make them”
It’d time this club walked the talk.
    Use our academy.
    GK Martinez
    CB Bielik.
    DM Niles.
    CM Joe Willock.
    RW Nelson.
    Strik Nketiah.
    Cost. $0
PS Don’t get a manager either.
    We don’t need one.

  9. Would be an upgrade on what we already have although I doubt he is the level we desperately require

    1. already got Chambers, Holding, Mavropanos. Mustafi is our oldest CB that is fit and he’s garbage, so we actually do need an older head.

    1. Your list is a good one but far too short. I would sell the entire first team squad, save Auba, Laca, Mhki, Ramsey, AM-N, Mavropanos, Chambers, Monreal (for one year only) Ozil and all the younger non- ruined as yet youngsters on the fringes. ALL the rest should be got rid of asap or as soon as they can be replaced. Kolasinac is a 50/50 to keep. First out the door should be the two you said though.

  10. Read some where AW blamed some fans for their extreme reaction which brought about his removal.

I can’t believe this guy still doesn’t see the light. Or maybe he may never see the light but he can say all he wants. Only regret may be fans didn’t act earlier to get him out.

Arteta or whoever comes in, should not be allowed to dabble in transfer of players. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It obvious to us as we had suffered from non-active in-transfer of players. Perhaps the rumored request of Arteta may make the board think twice on getting his service.
