Arsenal and Nigeria legend Nwankwo Kanu has announced a one-off legends game for charity, with Sol Campbell, Lauren and Robert Pirès among the first wave of ex-pros to be confirmed for the star-studded match.

The Petrolex Kanu Cup in association with Masters FootballTM aims to raise money for the Kanu Heart Foundation and provide children in Africa with life-saving heart operations.

Kicking off on Sunday 30th September 2018 at The Hive Stadium in Barnet, more participating footballing stars will be announced in the build-up to the game, with the stage set for fans to see legends who played alongside and against Kanu lace up their boots again.

Aiming to raise money to build a new Cardiac Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, and reduce costly travel and accommodation fees for sick children and their families, the match also seeks to improve awareness of heart diseases in Africa through education and vital research.

Kanu commented, “Since retiring from football, the Kanu Heart Foundation has been my biggest passion. It is amazing to be in a position to have helped over 500 children within and outside Nigeria gain access to vital heart operations, having suffered from heart conditions myself – but I want to do more.

“The Petrolex Kanu Cup in association with Masters FootballTM is an opportunity to bring people together to see some amazing players – and my great friends – play the beautiful game once more, whilst also raising money for a good cause. I cannot wait to share the full teams and for the game to kick off!”

  1. Remembered vividly when inter Milan put kanu for sale all summer no club was willing to take the risk, it took the genius of wenger to bring him to arsenal in the winter and gave him another life, the hallmark of it was bn crowned African best in 1999, u remains one of my favorite legends, a scorer of great goals!!!

  2. Can’t forget the match against Chelsea in the year of the invisibles, the hatrick u scored in less than 15mins cameo will always be remembered forever…. ,
Well done King Papillo, keep the good work going

    1. I think you got yourself all muddled up a bit pal.It was the 1999-2000 season Kanu got his hatrick at Stamford Bridge. The invincible season was 2003-04 and that season we won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.
      Just saying

      1. Haha I remember that goal vividly but I thought it was 98/99 season (so not that vividly at all really). Kanu was was a very skilful player in his prime, it’s the way he rounded Ed De Goey (I think), then curled it home from an acute angle past two defenders (I think one of them was Marcel Desailly).

Imagine, we were losing 2-0 with 20 mins left or so when Arsene Wenger throws a hail Mary and the mighty Nwankkwo Kanu comes onto the pitch. Nobody in that stadium could have possibly imagined he was about to turn the contest upside down on its head.

He came on as a super sub and within 15 mins, left the pitch with his status confirmed as an Arsenal legend.
