Arsenal Women came away winners on Sunday afternoon as they saw off Bristol City Women 2-1 away from home. Coming away with our first away win of the season and all three points.
Sunday’s match wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies, but again, the Arsenal women put their heads down and worked hard to get the victory and the three points. Katie McCabe had another stand out performance and managed to bag both of our two goals, winning the match for our Gooner women.
It took Katie only seven minutes to score against Bristol City Women on Sunday afternoon and in true Katie McCabe style, it was an absolute rocket of a goal. After Arsenal were awarded a set piece corner, a Bristol City Women’s defender headed the ball out of the box, landing to the feet of McCabe, who dropped her shoulder a bit, knocked the ball past a defender onto her left foot and fired the ball from over 30 yards out into the top right-hand corner of the Bristol City keeper net.
Again, putting her side in front and in the driving seat. Playing on the right wing and dropping into the midfield when needed, she saw a lot of the ball. Playing a full 90 minutes and completing 42/48 passes and walking away with 88% pass completion for the game. She really was the standout performer of the day.
Bristol City Women managed to equalize just 8 minutes later after Rachel Furness got her head on the end of a magnificent cross from Jamie-Lee Napier and into the back of Zinsberger’s net, putting them on level terms. Going into the tunnel, McCabe was seen being the leader she is, and trying to hype her team mates up for a big upcoming half of football.
Just after half time, McCabe did it again and apparently, she only scores bangers, because the second goal was nearly as good as the first and almost the exact same situation. Arsenal Women were awarded a corner, that was whipped in and out of the box off the head of a Bristol City Women’s defender and fell to the chest of McCabe who then controlled the ball and volleyed it into the back of the Bristol City keepers net, putting Arsenal women 2-1 in front and ended up being the winning goal.
Another stellar performance from our Irish international, after just signing a new contract that will hopefully see her in the red and white for many years to come, she put on a show for the Arsenal Women’s fans and showed just why she got that new contract and after scoring an incredible goal against Aston Villa she gets this incredible brace against Bristol City.
