KM – Thoughts on Sporting, Welbeck, and the challenges to come

Arsenal lose Danny Welbeck in a dull draw with Sporting by Konstantin Mitov

Hello lovely Arsenal people! So unlucky that guy Welbz is. I am so sorry for him as he really has been unlucky at Arsenal. This is not an injury due to to bad fitness or a player being poorly managed. It’s just a striker going all out for a header and falling awkwardly on his ankle which was really painful to see as the players faces showed.

I wish Danny a speedy recovery! It’s so sad, because he is one of those players that always gives 100% and with his deal ending in the summer this season was the time to convince the manager he’s worth the new contract, but now I’m unsure whether he’ll return in a meaningful time of the season. The other bad news is we’ve lost a player who’s been a great impact sub and did the job when he was called for in the cup tournaments.

Apart from that horror injury, the game was pretty dull. The positive part was we defended pretty well. I think Holding and Sokratis are the best pair in defense we have and I wasn’t worried at all about Sporting who failed to put a shot on target. Unfortunately our attack didn’t produce too much memorable moments either.

The line up we put on was mostly second string and it’s obvious that we’ve pretty much done our job in this group and if we don’t have any major hicc-ups we should be topping it too. That said I think Iwobi was pretty lively, but failed to get some end product and I thought he was a guy to challenge for a spot in the team. Mkhi didn’t put too much memorable notice of himself either and I wonder if Emery should have a word with him and see what’s up since he’s one of the few players who hasn’t really stepped up with the new manager.

For our next encounter, we welcome Wolves having drawn 3 of our last 4 games and we really need a win, since United and Spurs have picked up results despite not playing all that great. We’ll be facing them soon in consecutive games, we have a job to do our job before that.

Not a lot else to talk about really enjoy the rest of your week and hopefully we will add 3 more points to our tally.

  1. For me I thought Iwobi was a bit erratic, not consistent not the finished article, far from it.
Unfortunate for Welbeck, i hope its not as bad as it looked last night.

  2. Without Ozil the team is devoid of ideas. It was so plain to see. I was relying on Mikhy. We all know that he has the skills. We all know he is a good player. He actually does the correct moves but just not fast enough. As if the speed has deserted him. Maybe age catching up or he is low on confidence. Hopefully Emery can work on him. I get excited when Mickhy has the ball. I personally think he is much better than Ramsey. When ball goes to Ramsey there is no excitement at all – you very well know the attack and formation will be diffused..

    1. Poor Mkhitaryan should be given a few chances to play as a no 10, because he obviously has not been playing well as a winger. If Ramsey and Smith-Rowe have been given the chances to play behind the striker, he should get the opportunities as well

It would be good to give Ozil a strong competition

      1. Ramsey isn’t a No. 10 and I don’t know why Emery persisted with him over there.Mkhi’s poor form is not due to his position buy just because he’s off form.He has the qualities to be a good RW as season from some of his time at Dortmund even though prior to coming to the EPL he was a No. 10.However,I would only start him at No. 10 because he offers little to no penetration at RW.

    2. When Ozil doesn’t play that’s what some would say but when he plays and doesn’t do anything then the same would still say he played well.Ramsey is off form and due to contract issues it makes it easy to criticize him.The best we can do is reduce him to a bench role.

  3. I feel bad for Danny and wish him speedy recovery. But life must go on.
Now that we are looking in for some good additions, a certain exciting good prospect has caught the eyes of top European clubs. Kalu who plays for Bordeaux is one that can improve any team he plays for. Certainly better than Iwobi who is our winger in team as at today. No disrespect to Iwobi I’m his biggest fan but is an improvement of what we have or lack of.

  4. So that Adrian Durham has been at it again… apparently the media love us & we get special treatment from the premier league & Aubameyang shouldn’t have won POTM. He went on a right rant…. what a complete knob

  5. I assume that’s welbeck season over. It’s a shame because he was a perfect super sub who could even have a run in the team to cover for suspensions and injuries. Pushed Laca and Auba and kept the heat up, could play forward wide left..
The loss is far greater impact then most expect. I wish welbeck the best.

The best get well message would be a win tomorrow

  6. I miss Danny already
He’s not only a backup striker but a starter in cup matches and a good left winger (his best position)

    big loss
don’t underestimate the importance of the bench

  7. I don’t have anything to comment so I’ll just leave here a nice, past quote from Lord Bendtner.
When critical fans raised concern regarding his huge wages and subsequent value in the team, he snapped back saying:
“It is wrong to compare my salary to that of businessmen. Compare it to that of movie stars.” ?

    1. very funny Quantic dream. The lad was quite a character, had an ego as big as Ibrahimovic’s but sadly that’s where the similarities end.

Back to the topic of discuss, I feel sad for Danny as he was our highest quality “substitute” He would never rock and boat or sulk over game time and would always give 100% of his limited skill set. He did have a knack for scoring important goals; I do remember his injury time winner against Leicester in their title winning run, as well as his goals against AC Milan in last year’s Europa league matches.
The only positive from his injury is that our teenage protegee; Eddie Nketiah can now get some game time to fine tune his skills at top level without having to be sent on loan. I reckon he’ll get 10 minutes run-out at the end of EPL matches and start our cup games.
