Arsenal opened their league campaign with a narrow but important 1-0 victory over Manchester United. The scoreline suggests a solid start, yet the contest was far from straightforward. United impressed with their performance and arguably merited at least a share of the points.
It was a tightly fought match, with Arsenal struggling to impose themselves, particularly in attacking areas. The Gunners had anticipated a challenging encounter against a United side boasting several new attacking signings, and they knew that anything less than their best would make securing a win extremely difficult.
Arsenal Tested at Old Trafford
Arsenal’s summer business ensured they not only added quality to their ranks but also retained their most influential players. Nevertheless, even with their strengthened group, they encountered difficulties throughout the game at Old Trafford.

Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon observed how demanding the game had been for the defensive unit, particularly for William Saliba, Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori. Speaking to Football Insider, he explained, “Yeah, they did (struggled) a little bit, which was surprising but credit goes to United. They started the game really well. Cunha and Mbeumo were making all sorts of problems for the two centre-backs. Especially Calafiori on the left side, Mbeumo’s positions were really causing him problems.”

While the contest emphasised areas in which improvement is required, particularly in handling high-intensity attacks, Arsenal will take confidence from beginning their campaign with a win at one of the most difficult grounds in English football. Matches such as these reinforce that even on an off day, the Gunners can find a way to prevail.

I am afraid our Partey shield has gone. Our midfield is not as powerful as it was. It may or may not turn out to be a problem. Along with our igledepigledy 433 formation, which does not work and has holes in it.
The narrative is well trotted out….to win but not playing well is supposedly championship winning form. However , if last Sunday was such a dip , then next Saturday needs to show a huge improvement in our attacking ability : we need to pass and connect much better in the final third. I will be there (DV) to witness that.
The entire team struggled to be fair, a lot of dis- connects and boring watch for an Arsenal fan. It can’t get any worse than that, or can it!?
I could suggest at least two ways that it would have been worse & both ending in us losing.
I’ve always found Lee to be very astute and insightful. Very correct observations here as well imo.
There were times in years past when we would play well against United and end up losing. I will gladly take playing poorly but winning.
You can tell that the team is trying to play in a new way to get the most out of Gyokeres. Even City took some time to adjust to Haaland. Another week of training should get us closer to where we want to be.
The Leeds game will almost be like a ‘Practice’ to help the players gel and iron out mistakes. We are trying to play in a more direct manner which we haven’t done in a while. We didn’t get the execution right but the intent was there. We should be sharper by weekend.
Quite an adjustment and its success will still depend on what still has to be the assumption that Gyokeres will come good.
I’d like to have Gnonto on our left wing Saturday. We have to be ready for their extraordinarily high work rate. We definitely need to be sharper even though in general I don’t expect them to be very clinical in front of goal.
I think the words, “struggled the most” probably sums it up best. Everyone struggled with the exception, thank goodness, of Raya who had to be on top form because others simply weren’t. Without that display Arsenal would have been pretty fortunate to get a point.
Given the vast majority commenting here prior to the Utd game underestimated them, a “rabble” was one description that comes to mind, we probably shouldn’t consider the Leeds game in a similar fashion – just in case.
Yes, they are newly promoted, and it shouldn’t be, on paper, a huge challenge for Arsenal – but games aren’t played on paper as we found out against Utd.
I think we’ll win at Elland Road, and it’s good to be confident, but let’s not get overconfident. We don’t want to have to end up relying upon Raya for a second consecutive game.
As I had mentioned last week, I’m glad we played at OT early in the season. They are likely to improve when they’ve had enough time to gel and gain advantage from having no European commitments. Leeds is coming to the Emirates this time. They didn’t have the cutting edge against Everton yesterday but were a very well organized, hard working, and cohesive unit.
Yes. Don’t know why I said Elland Road earlier – probably because I had just seen the video highlights of Leeds vs Everton. Not a great game as you say, but Leeds were a “team” and they had fantastic support.
