Lens match added to help Arsenal´s BIGGEST pre-season EVER

It might just have been a case of Arsenal accepting the chance of a bit more pre-season preparation, but usually the line up of games before the season begins is sorted well in advance. This summer feels a bit different to me, as it was only a few days ago that Arsenal.com announced that the Gunners have added a match with the French club Lens which is to be played before the Arsenal squad fly off to America for the games that were already scheduled.

I get the distinct impression that Arsene Wenger is well aware that this summer´s pre-season could be the biggest ever and so the Frenchman is doing everything in his power to make sure that his players are ready for the Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 14th.

The reasons for this are twofold. First of all there is the fact that the two summer tournaments of Euro 2016 and the Copa America could mean that Arsenal will have to start without the five key players Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. The second is that the fixtures have given us a difficult start, with the current EPL champions Leicester City next up after Jurgen Klopp´s team.

And with the competition for the title looking strong this year with Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho taking over at Man City and Man United while Chelsea are sure to be a threat again under Antonio Conte, Arsenal cannot afford to get off to a poor start and be having to play catch up from the very beginning. So Wenger needs the players that will be available to him to be as ready as possible.

Can Wenger and the available Arsenal squad have a strong pre-season and get the Gunners off to a good start?

Bob.

  1. Pre season after a Euro or W/C
is always a challenge for all teams.
Arsenal has a large and experienced
squad so should be ready for game one.

  2. @Mr Positive. Do we believe Arsenal
can win the EPL this year?.
If the truth be known 95% of
    Arsenal fans would say “NO”
Hope yes but faint hope with little real conviction.
After 12 years why would anyone believe fervently in winning?
There is no recent history to inspire such confidence.
The owner is focused on profit, not titles..he said so publicly.
The board aim for “sustainability” e.g. financial stability.
The Manager remains adamant Top 4 “is” a trophy.
The players are comfortable on big wages and no pressure to win titles.
The Arsenal fans are happy with Top 4th and describe
winning clubs as buying titles and their fans as plastic
a kind of bizarre “we are above winning titles” mentality.
Leicesters win has challenged temporarily but not
significantly changed the Top 4 is good enough mentality at Arsenal.
It is always “we want to be very competitive and win titles”
but stopping short of putting a definite time frame to win
and never promising any consequences if said title is not won.
Life in the top 4 lane is too comfy so why spoil a good thing?

    1. Wenger delivered an Ultimatum to Henri
to choose between coaching or punditry.
Better he deliver an ultimatum to himself
win the title this season or leave.

  3. To compete this season we need 3 more signings
I think Higuain, Draxler and a reliable CB will do the job

    1. Off course he’ll be : Takuma Asano. The “Asian Aguerro”. I said it first, hahaha…
