Arsenal have finalised the signing of Piero Hincapie on an initial loan arrangement, with the deal structured to become permanent at the conclusion of the season.
The Ecuadorian defender arrives at the Emirates following an impressive spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he played a role in the side that completed the entire 2023/2024 domestic campaign unbeaten. His addition is seen as a significant reinforcement for Arsenal’s defensive unit as the club continues to build towards long-term stability.
A Replacement for Jakub Kiwior
Hincapie has effectively been brought in as a replacement for Jakub Kiwior, who served as an important back-up option during his time with the Gunners. The Polish international has since departed, sealing a transfer to FC Porto. Interestingly, the transfer could have taken a different path, as Arsenal initially explored the possibility of including Kiwior in their negotiations with Leverkusen.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal proposed a swap arrangement, offering Kiwior as part of their pursuit of Hincapie. However, Leverkusen showed no interest in acquiring the former Spezia defender and rejected the offer outright. As a result, the Gunners were compelled to proceed with a cash-only agreement, ultimately allowing Kiwior to continue his career in Portugal while they secured the services of Hincapie.

What Hincapie Brings to Arsenal
For Arsenal, the primary focus now shifts to integrating Hincapie into the squad and ensuring he adapts swiftly to the demands of English football. His experience in helping Leverkusen claim the Bundesliga title demonstrates his ability to contribute to a winning team, and the expectation will be that he can replicate a similar impact in North London.
Supporters will be hopeful that his defensive qualities, combined with composure on the ball and versatility across the back line, can strengthen Arsenal’s push for domestic and European honours this season. Having already proved himself on a major stage, Hincapie is viewed as a player capable of making an immediate contribution while also serving as a cornerstone for the club’s future.
The signing represents not only a significant addition in terms of quality but also a statement of intent. Arsenal will be eager to see whether Hincapie’s arrival can provide the platform to convert their ambitions into tangible success over the coming campaign.

Was Kiwior that bad really?
I’m not complaining but the truth be known Hincapie is going to have limited opportunities and with a potentially huge transfer fee for an area of the pitch where we have lots of options I think this squad place could have on a left winger considering Martinelli has tanked..
Kiwior was very good at CB but very limited to poor at LB. I think hincapie has a realistic chance of becoming first choice at lb while being more than comfortable covering at CB when needed. I do think the only reason he’s necessary is calafiori’s injury record, though. You’d imagine that next summer one of him, calafiori and Gabriel would probably want to leave depending on how things work out (assuming MLS is very unlikely to be leaving that early due to club connection, but you never know)
Kiwoir is a reliable defender, but Hincapié is far better he’s a work horse on the left, you will see that from day one.
He’s very effective in the air as Gabriel Magahlase
I 100% agree with this comment. It’s all very well having 2 players for every position, but to cover central defence we have White, Timber and Califiori who can all play there as well as on the wide areas. What we do not have is a dedicated and frightening left winger (any more). This doesn’t stop me from still be delighted that Eze has returned home !

First Arsenal lost too much, kiwior was worthy £45 m,so Arsenal made a loss,
Secondly kiwior was the best I champions League so he is best as No 4 and not left back which Arteta should have been aware of.,I loved his height and versiterlity and rate him high.
