Lucas Torreira admits frustration but respects Unai Emery decision

Lucas Torreira not giving up fighting for Arsenal place

Lucas Torreira has admitted that he is frustrated with being on the bench at Arsenal but respects Unai Emery’s decision.

The Uruguayan is one of a number of midfielders fighting for just one position in the team. Emery likes a three man midfield and two of those spots are basically taken. Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka appear to be the Spaniards go to men which only leaves the one place.

Torreira has yet to play a full game this season in the Premier League and has been discussing the situation with the media this week.

“I don’t know whether I’d say it’s frustrating,” Torreira said.

“All players want to play, they obviously want to be in the starting XI – that’s completely normal. But that’s not something that depends on me.

“It’s down to the coach to make those decisions and really I have to respect that. Right now it’s about not giving up.

Torreira was also asked if he would be happy accepting a lesser role with the team and promised to fight for the shirt.

“You have to continue working hard and whether I’m playing in the starting XI or from the bench I want to give my all for the team. That’s the kind of player I am,” he said

“I like to give 100 per cent for the shirt to help my team-mates and to give the fans something to cheer about.”

Fair comments from Torreira and he could not really say anything different. He could hardly come out and attack his club manager and was very diplomatic with his response.

But it is clear that he is unhappy with a bit-part role and he will have to knuckle down and fight for a more regular place. This is good for the team as it means more players trying their very best. Competition increases the quality of performance which is good for the player as well.

  1. Torreira is not the top DM we need he is too light weight.
But he will play in many of the Europa League, Carabao cup + FA Cup games.
Until we get a top DM and two top CB’s 6th is the best we can expect from Arsenal.

    1. With the players we have at our disposal, just a mere indication that we can’t finish in the top four should get Unai his marching orders.
As the manager he should be able to come up with a team that is capable of holding it up there week in week out against any opposition from this group.Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to field a convincing team in any of our premier league matches which really worries me.

    2. The best thing about Torreira is his speed of closing down opponents. Against Standard liege for example, there was an instance he appeared out of nowhere to block a long shoot. He also doesn’t hold back from 50/50 challenges. When Willock and Torreira play, we become more direct and press the opponents better. I guess Emery thinks that Guendozi and Xhaka are slow but handle the physical side of the game better.

    3. hes 1st choice for both Manager when fit….

maybe fans see something managers do not…

maybe the fans should manage the club instead?

  2. Emery with his selection and tactics?..how can torerria be on bench and Dhaka and willock will start?..

  3. Yes but we know Emery would rather have a poor Xhaka in the team don’t we all know?
I wonder how whole trying to get our best team, you’ll keep rotating Torreira alongside Ceballos and Willock. TF is he meant to be doing upfront?
Sorry Lucas, we have a bum as manager.
Torreria should be starting in his position, if he plays poorly there then I have no problem with him sitting on the bench

    1. But both Guendouzi and Xhaka play CM and DM. It is only logical that the coach would expect Torreira to be capable of doing the same as his direct competitors. Unless Xhaka and Guendouzi are better than Torreira? The modern game has no place for one-dimensional players with a limited skill set like… I won’t name him coz then that is all you will see from my post. Imagine if De Bruyne said, “Shucks, am a winger!” He’d end up on the Mancity bench because the coach believes guys like Sterling, Sane, Mahrez and Bernado are better there.. which may or may not be true but ultimately it’s the coach that decides. AMN told the coach,”Shucks, am not a rightback!” This is true and he was rubbish there in my opinion but now Chambers has taken his spot and AMN will not be seeing any game time soon with bellerin coming back.

  4. Torreira will leave this summer if he doesnt get regular game time in my opinion. He’s clearly good enough and every else thinks he should be starting except emery. I wouldnt blame him if he left.

  5. The formation we are playing, has limited , a number of players. My worry is that we will end up losing a number of good players. We adopted the system that Liverpool is playing, but forgetting that we don’t have middle fielders and defense, that Liverpool has

  6. Its a tough selection which can worry any coach in the world, toreirra is a good player, but guendozi deserve his role, emery is a fan of error prone xhaka, the best combination now should be guendozi and torreirra at DM,either xhaka, ceballos or willock at CM,but its just a matter of time, result will tell.

  7. Emery should better know his first eleven early and focus on the serious players, as for me i’d prefer lukas to xhaka but the coach will decide who to play but the most important thing is to start whosoever is serious.
