Lucas Torreira – The defensive midfielder Arsenal really need

The new Arsenal coach Unai Emery is said to be a big admirer of Jean Michael Seri from Nice, and it has been reported that the Frenchman is available for £35million if we go for him, but is he the type of midfielder that Arsenal really need right now?

If you ask anyone on JustArsenal (as in most previous years) that we actually need a Defensive Midfielder and nothing else at the moment. Seri is not that man apparently and the one that we are now reported to be looking at is the Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan has a €25m release clause and at that price he is sure to attract a lot of suitors when he appears at the World Cup this summer.

The stats site whoscored.com has compiled these opinions from his stats over the season….

Lucas Torreira Characteristics
+ Strengths
Ball interception – Very Strong
Long shots – Strong
Taking set-pieces – Strong
Passing – Strong
Tackling – Strong
Concentration – Strong
Blocking the ball – Strong

– Weaknesses
Aerial Duels – Weak

Lucas Torreira’s Style of Play
Likes to shoot from distance
Gets fouled often
Likes to play short passes
Likes to tackle

Torreira sounds exactly like the type of player we need and I really hope the rumours are true!

  1. Torreira looks exactly the type of player we need to bring in as a CDM.This boy LOVES a tackle. He is quick to shut down danger and seems to thrive on the defensive side of the game. There is NOTHING not to like about this player

    1. He also has £21.5m release clause. He’s cheap so I don’t get why we are dilly dallying.
Napoli want to use him as a replacement for Jorginho so we need to act very fast because the player prefers an Italy stay. However, a month or so ago his agent said the player will not be moving to Napoli anymore for an undisclosed reason. So at least that helps.

In other news: We have offered Aaron Ramsey a new 4 year deal to stay worth £130,000 per week with a £1.9m signing on fee.He is holding out for £150,000.
If we really want him to stay we should just give it to him.

          1. But cmon in all fairness do you really want to see Ramsey running out midfield ,I thought we were moving forward :these type of players just abit good enough to make us compete , I just don’t get this love in for Ramsey ,ii don’t want to watch another match with elneney ,Ramsey or xhaka running the most important positions on the pitch .

    2. Jorginho to City now a done deal.We can’t let this guy slip out of our hands.Napoli will be going for him.We need to act swiftly.

      1. How long has he been in Italy, or has he got the duel citizen passport on grandmother’s side or whatever it’s called. If Napoli really do want him which am guessing they likely do then I reckon we would lose out.

  2. On YouTube, he looks like a less hardworking Kante. I think Xhaka also looked dazzling on YouTube and Xhaka’s defending stats were impressive as well (before Arsenal recruited him)

Some people might be concerned of Torreira’s height. Mascherano are also short, but he was a great DM

In my opinion, Arsenal should chase Ndidi, because he is a Premier League proven player and we all know what he could do with Leicester. At least there will be no language barrier

      1. Ndidi, Nzonzi, Torreira, Cavahlo, Doucoure – there are options out there and hopefully Sven and Raul are on the ball in consultation with Unai. Arsenal has tried the “No Specialist DM” experiment for far too long; time to admit it is a recipe for failure.

    1. Am I the only one who thinks Ndidi isn’t as good as people make him out to be?I don’t know about stats but on watching him he seems a very hardworking player who is a liability with the ball at his feet.
Ndidi is not the man at all. He’s hardworking and all that but very poor in many areas. His attacking is really really poor and if Coquelin was sold for the same reason it should not be Ndidi.
Our best best would’ve been the Benfica DM.He’s one of the best DM’s out there.I think he’s the captain or so but can’t remember his name.

    2. I want to watch this guy in games now to see what he is like, YouTube can make players seem better than they are but at the same time, the player has to do something to be recorded for YouTube… So, basically I am really curious about this guy now 😛

One thing which impressed me about ScoutNations YouTube vid, he looks like a player who has acceleration and pace, someone who can put themselves around in CM to feel like 2 players.

Just what Xhaka has needed in my opinion, someone to do the agile leg work and offer something in attack themselves, not being easy to predict. He doesn’t jump into all his tackles on YouTube which was promising.

Tolisso also looked a good player but we missed him, we do need a high energy CM who can tackle while not removing himself from the game in a slide like Xhaka did against UTD.

  3. I don’t know much about Torreira if anything at all but Uruguayans are pretty physical and should adapt well to the premier league either him seri or Nzonzi, a couple of defenders and throw in Leon Bailey to get fans back onside.. I’ll be happy with that ?

  4. I would prefer we get both Doucore and Torriera to either play them both together or depending on the opponent.

    – Doucore is not only physical but can also play B2B (Veira / Diaby) kind of play but is still developing. Already accustomed to the pace of the EPL. He can take up JW place in the team and on lower wages.

    – Torriera can take up Santi’s squad place plus wages. Despite his physic, if played with someone taller and as energetic as him (Doucore) he can set the EPL alive with midfield dominance.

Xhaka can be sold while we maintain Elneny for rotation / cup games.

I would take a midfield of Doucore / Torriera / Ramsey / Elneny / AMN

      1. @Muffdiver fekir is probably wanting champions league football and could we even afford him? Nice idea all the same.. still we live in hope ?

    1. DM: Torriera (Elneny sub)
      B2B: Doucore (AMN sub)
      ACM: Rambo (Mkhi sub?)

Emery has said something about Rambo and Auba being key to the team and if the CM is taken up with ‘tougher’ players then that leaves ACM for Rambo, Ozil area.

Ozil wage would make it hard to have him as backup for Rambo so it could mean the end of Ozil at AFC, is it worth paying Ozil wages for a bench player?

In my private fantasies I have swapped Ozil for Martial, reunite Jose with Ozil and give UTD another mega wage to deal with while we get a left sided attacker for form an attack of:

      Auba/Rambo(Mkhi)/Martial
      Laca

The pace… The goal capability… The fear it will strike into other teams 😛

      1. Forgot to say, I was asking about the idea of the players position at the very beginning XD

  5. I am certain that before the new season Emery will do what Wenger failed to do – flatly refused to do , actually – since Gilberto left a decade ago. That will be the purchase of a proper quality CDM.

    1. If we sign a CM instead of a CDM it means we don’t know what we want.Napoli will be in for him since Jorginho will be leaving and the player likes Italy so we must act fast.Woe unto if we sign a tippy tappy player instead of a CDM.

      1. Then if he likes Italy then our chance of getting him is 30/70 in favour of Napoli so don’t make it sound like we are dilly dally.

  6. Toreira can be our own kante he’s a rough tackler and a good set piece taker plus He’s quite comfortable in possession.so I hope we get him b4 the world cup cause he’ll definitely come more expensive especially if he starts for Uruguay. I hope we bring in teriera, seri, caglar, socratis, litchstiener, another winger(forsberg, dembele,Malcolm, pavon) and ofcourse a keeper

  7. Just watched a bit of YouTube on this lad and I had a lol.
He looks like what I had hoped Coquelin would develop into but Coquelin didn’t develop the attacking side as much as needed.

    Also same number, 34 XD

This is the kinda player that might make Xhaka a better player in our team, he looks like he has good acceleration and pace which he uses well and stays on his feet for a lot of tackles, he looked impressive… but many players can on YouTube… BUT then again, you have to do it to have it recorded and put online ;P

I’m going to keep an eye on this player as he looks exciting, like a player who can get people on their feet with excitement, it’s what helps make football fun to watch.

  8. People are skeptical because YouTube made Gervinho look like Messi. Righly so. So stat attack for you:

    Stats per match:
    Tackles: 2.8
    Interceptions 2
    Dribbles: 1.3
    Fouled: 2.3
    Dispossesd: 1
    Bad touches: 1.1
    Key passes: 1
    Shots: 0.9

6 yellows all season, zero red cards. 4 goals, 1 assist.

Why is he not an Arsenal player already?

He’s a mold of Santi and Kante together, which makes him very special.

    1. Yeh cheap and over the hill looking at signing a 34 and 30 year old defenders that tells you everything you need to know the club is a complete joke a laughing stock of football get ready for another 5 years worth of this crap will never challenge for premier league or qualify for champions league as a football club challenging for top honours it will never happen again!!

  9. Torreria would be a brilliant signing for Arsenal, a
tenacious, no nonsense ball winning hawk in the midfield that wouldn’t break the bank. His Santi/Kante comparison is spot on in my opinion.

    Torreria… $22M
    Socratis—$16M
    Benatia—$20M
    Rico—$18M
    Lichsteiner—free
    Dembele–loan

Even though I don’t rate either Socratis or Benatia it seems Emery and Arsenal are attempting to address the back line deficiencies with experience and steel. Both the Greek and Moroccan are old school, physical CB’s that enjoy tackles and yellow cards. lol

Somewhat OT, after watching Ramsey’s less than impressive performance for Wales the other night I’d personally prefer Arsenal offer him a modest wage increase and sell him if he chooses to run down his contract.

  10. We are going to build our team around Ramsey. are we Southampton I am not waiting for the end of the season to see this disappointment these people are so easily brainwash. Like people that live in my community sports team are not good because of the manager it’s all about the players most of the time the players know the game and more smarter than the couch Liverpool and Tottenham I have a totally new team from 3 years ago we need at least 5 new place to make top 4 I’m going to name five players who can make us compete abdoulaye doucoure. Seri. Luca torreira Forsberg kaulibaly how easy is that

    1. Brainwashed?
      Why?

Rambo has had Wenger develop him from 17? He had that horrid leg break and came back with less desire to defend, this lack of defending appears to have been encouraged by Wenger a lot as he wanted players ready to attack… Not sat back defending and learning when to sit back and when to press the attack, it was press the attack or press the attack.

Me personally, I think Rambo had a great half season alongside Arteta, Rambo was not only scoring goals for fun as a CM but also putting in a def performance that made proper DMs look 2nd best.

If Emery thinks he can then why not give the new manager chance to prove his worth?
Emery helped Varratti and look how good he is.
Rambo has the same qualities and IMO slightly better at being a goal threat but Varratti is better dribbler… Point here is that Rambo could be our Varratti. He could fail… It isn’t Wenger though so it is unfair to judge him as if his development would be same old same old.

        1. Word is Ramsey is signing for £175,000 per week. Surely there were cheaper, less injury prone CAM’s out there?
Hopefully, since Unai Emery rates Ramsey, he can instill discipline into him and control the reckless bombing forward, silly flicks, losing the ball and failing to track back, while retaining his goal threat.

  11. Youtube makes average players look awesome because they find the best clips of them. Its better to go by stats and the Quality of the league they play in.

    1. I agree. Am pretty sure Ramsey’s little flicks and unusual goals would look thrilling to an outsider. However, we know the whole story regarding Ramsey’s capabilities and limitations. So unfortunately we will have to rely on fans who follow Serie A and watch Lucas Torreira regularly. I have only heard good things from them so far though. Seri has been mixed, good going forward but poor defensively with excessive back flips which I have witnessed myself on YouTube. Doucoure now that’s a beast! I have watched him myself and I know he is solid..YouTube and real life.

  12. Lucas looks to me like a more defence minded Cazorla. He’s exactly what we need. Technically gifted and he knows his role. He’s my first choice for the DM position. You will love him better than you loved Sanchez, I can promise you!
