Man Utd v Arsenal review – Winner gives Danny a dream return to Old Trafford

A dream return to his former club for Danny Welbeck who scored an excellent second goal for Arsenal to give us a 2-1 win, breaking the Old Trafford hoodoo and putting us into an FA cup semi-final.

Both Arsenal and Manchester United started with real intent at Old Trafford. Alexis Sanchez was getting some joy against their right back Valencia and had an early shot when he cut inside and nearly created panic. But Hector Bellerin picked up an early booking and United were also getting some joy down the flanks, with a couple of free kicks and corners giving us problems.

Fellaini nearly got free in the box after 14 minutes but lost control at the key moment. The tempo was high and both teams were pressing hard without the ball, even Ozil, which also meant that the passing from both was not as accurate. In the 20th minute we left Fellaini with too much space in the box again but his pull back for Young was just too heavy.

Chamberlain then blew a good opportunity for Arsenal and then had another great burst stopped by Rojo, who should have been booked like Bellerin was for a similar tackle. Then in the 25th minute, just after a brilliant bit of defending by Koscielny, we got the opening goal with a great finish by Monreal after great work by Chamberlain.

But the lead lasted just a few minutes as we failed to pick up Rooney and allowed him a free header from Di Maria’s cross. Way too easy. Welbeck had a half decent penalty claim denied and his own header saved shortly after. Szczesny got away with a fumbling another Di Maria cross but it was bit worrying.

It was fast and furious stuff as the half wore on and both teams were creating chances. Shezzer saved at the near post after Di Maria broke free and then De Gea smothered a Cazorla free kick just before the break which came with no more goals. Van Gaal made two changes at halftime, with Jones and Carrick replacing Shaw and Herrera to suggest he wanted more solidity at the back and more control in midfield.

They were bossing possession as well before Arsenal were forced into ouw own change as the Ox pulled a hamstring and Ramsey came on. We soon got our first good chance of the half but a deflection tok tyhe sting from Alexis’ shot. Ramsey made a difference in winning the midfield battle and Arsenal were the team pressing more.

Fellaini and Young saw yellow and then Monreal did just enough to make Di Maria shoot wide. But Danny Welbeck made no mistake when he pounced on a back pass, beat De Gea and fired in on the hour mark to get his dream return to his former club.

United pushed hard to get another quick reply and they wanted a second yellow for Bellerin for a tackle so Wenger wisely replaced him with Chambers. The Gunners looked determined to hold firm this time though, working hard and biting into tackles as we did at Man City. And we still looked dangerous when we got the ball and went looking for a third and killer goal.

Giroud came on with around 15 minutes left and was involved at the start of a great move which ended in Cazorla being denied by a fantastic De Gea save. Then Di Maria got a second yellow for a bad reaction and it looked like being our night. Maybe it was nerves but we got a bit sloppy after that when we should have been making the extra man count. Arsenal fans were holding our breath as the whistle went after Januzaj claimed a foul in the box but it was a dive and he was rightly booked.

United were lumping it up to Fellaini and trying for the second ball and we had five minutes of stoppage time to endure although Ozil or Sanchez should have scored with a minute left. It didn’t matter though as Arsenal recorded a rare and vital win over the old enemy. Youuuuu Gunners!!

            1. an gabriel an ospina will be back for semi’s
              and final

              liverpool vs arsenal- HOLY SH*T!!

            1. anyone care to congratulate wenger?

danny welbeck took that chance excellently, an covered alot of ground.
yes he isnt always clinical, but giroud in the biggest games is a risk, an slows play

monreal for gibbs- fantastic call wenger
              game defining choice

took off bellerin at the perfect time

              well done arsene

              1. Giroud is our best player in big games, as he has shown us all season by scoring in these big games and working his ass off in defense.

Good job Wenger, fantastic match by both manager and players!

              2. What are you talking about? Giroud was rested today and Wenger started with danny cuz he knew how motivated Danny was to score against manure and show those losers what a mistake they have done.still giroud is our main man in attack.giroud will score every time he starts, wait for another giroud goal against west ham

                1. Good game I like the result I hope we can do it again in the premier league. I hope Man U don’t make top 4. Contrary to what most people thinks I don’t think van gyaal is that good of a coach and for me I was a fan of David Moyes and I believe he was treated unfairly, at times we are hard on our manager but we don’t know what constraints he was working with and I think we have a solid group of players that can compete.

              3. Arsene actually did a good job. The ref was amazing. I wasn’t sure we’d get this result. Great f’in day .

          2. Great job by the players.I am so happy for danny boy. Great goal, well taken.Sanchez should have scored or passed that last ball to giroud, but who gives a damn, job done.well done everyone. Another trophy less season for manure,lol…..I’m so fukin happy.rvp can go on and cry his asss off.well done danny boy. Just what we all wanted a win and danny to score.yèeeeeeeeeees. coyg

        1. Wenger.
Give coqueliin a new contract fast before we go broke.
That is adding like £10,000 per week to his salary every match.

      1. Ironically enough Welbeck scored the winning goal in similar fashion to Giggs’ all those years back. LOL! COYGGGGGGGG

    1. All those of you who thought we will not win this game please raise you hands….. MOMT is WELBECK . .. for winning the game on his old turf and celebrating…

        1. @ Daddy’s boy……if you’d Looked critically, you’d see me write “ARSENAL” boldly…..ain’t scared of blasting the manager or the players when they put up nasty performances as well as praise em when they put up decent performances…..unlike u, who pretends to be cozy and all supportive while carrying a secret grudge….. God is watching!

          1. Dude for 25 years I have been an Arsenal fan. I have never ever booed a player, never ever said or thought Wenger out.
I am a loyal fan, 100%. I WILL SUPPORT ANY PLAYER THAT PUTS ON THE SHIRT.

    2. To top it off, when we win the FA Cup it will be no. 12 which will become the record taking us past United no less!

    1. hats of to wenger that they are not teaching our player how to dives
that is difference between Wenger and jose,Lvg

      1. Miss Jenny Say dived like the Olympics. Then acted surprised with the yellow card

          1. @muffdiver
That sh*t is ingrained in their squad. Drinkin effin red bull at training, thinkin it gives em wings…

    2. YESSS!!! Feels good for once to not get disappointed after having huge expectations from our beloved Gunners 🙂 FA cup glory all the way

  1. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

    divechester united… ahahahahha

    1. Longball United went down to 10 men compliments of Diver Maria. What a bunch of cheating c*nts really glad Danny scored, he should have ran past Van Gaal, looked him in the eye with a mouth full of teeth. Well played gunners WELL PLAYED. De Gea is one heck of a keeper though I wouldn’t mind him in our team.

WHO THE HELL ARE AN UNITED, WHO THE HELL ARE MAN UNITED, WHO THE HELL ARE MAN UNITED. UP THE GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. @muffdiver
AW sent Le Coq to the “Gravel Pit” and he got his WU Tang on…He was all over Felliani’s azz like a cheap suit…

          1. i remember saying to everyone…its only been a few games.
le coq is not ready – calm down

boy hes proved alot of ppl wrong
            happy for him, really am

            1. @muffdiver
Big Ups to him. He’s just doin what he has to do to keep his spot. And he’s doin it very well…

  2. I wonder if some of those dives in the Fergie era would have been PK’s. He absolutely bullied the refs. Not today Fergie, not today!

    1. @Jim A
      Exactly…
Still don’t know how Fellaini stayed on though. Le Coq was all over his azz though.

  3. Everyone performed well but Monreal MOTM for me. Scored the goal and defended brilliantly. I still wonder why people question him and placing Gibbs over him.

    1. See, when a player is underperforming, someone else who’s better takes his place. Monreal wasn’t this good before this time and Gibbs was better, so Gibbs was preferred.

But now, Monreal”s form is very good, better than Gibbs and that’s why he’s starting…

  4. Monreal is a real defender.. Wow..

The Coq fought against the lamp post (Fellaini) and he came out on top.

    Santi was amazing too..

All in all the team was solid and we looked comfortable..

  5. Why the hell arsenal can’t keep possession under pressure? Why ramsey keeps on losing possession in the last minute?? Why Arsenal din’t believe they could win against United? Why We can’t keep calm? Anyways.. You know what we won at Old Trafford.. Oh yeah baby..

  6. congrats on the win…not a very good play but thanks for the memories

    time for a change!!

    Wenger out!!!

    1. The icing on the cake is Welbeck netting the winner. If we eventually win the FA Cup, it will be a memorable one.

I hope we learn to play this way sometimes, pressing from the opponents half, it really paid off today. The tactics here was different from the one at the Etihad.

I just dont like Rooney’s record against Arsenal, right from his case Everton days.

Good and memorable win at Old Garage….. hahaha

  7. Arsenal just too good
Happy for Szcz Mertz Coquelin Ozil.
    They answered their critics.
    Yup gotta praise Wenger too.
    Brilliant win.
    C’mon Blackburn

  8. We have gotten 2 over Manchester this season. We’ll be back there soon but this time with more confidence. Thanks lads for making my day. COYG.

  9. Van Gaal o Van gaal trophyless
Van gaal o van gaal trophyless. Great win to be honest and kudos to wojiech for making good saves. De gea must be a wizard I swear

    1. They still couldn’t win after cheating. Rooney and De Gea only decent players they got, the rest are all average/poor. Smalling is probably getting a lashing from Van Gaal right now lol. Watching United tonight reminded me of playing Fifa – long balls all game, cheap tactic.

      ONTO THE SEMIS GUNNERS!

  10. Great win, the best draw possible for the semi finals. It’s a good day to be a Gunner!

  11. lets be honest. Nobody threw down money on Welbeck scoring…. SO GLAD HE DID THOUGH! FINALLY OT curse is over! We’re finally getting better at these big games. Everyone was comitted, nobody hid. Monreal hands down MOTM, Ozil, Cazorla, Coquelin were all class, and Ramsey also had a strong cameo. If it werent for David De Gea it wouldve been 4-1 probably.

  12. Absolutely f*cking buzzing, I hate Man U almost as much as Spurs and it hurt so bad we never beat them but tonight we have and I’m loving it.

    1. you need to have more faith prior to games
i was unsure but cant go into games saying we will lose.

      always believe 🙂

      1. @muffdiver
Thats what I’m sayin. People sayin”We can’t do it now, because we haven’t done it before” is a serious “buzzkill”…

  13. I’m soooooooo happy

    Not only did we win
Not only we go to Semi- Finals of FA Cup
But we beat United @ Old Trafford
    Awesome night.

But I must say de Gea is a keeper
Other keepers and we would have won 1-4 or 5

Also Mertsacker played well. Szczesny played good enough but Ospina should stay number 1

    Fantastic Win
Now we MUST win the FA Cup AGAIN
    COYG

  14. This win will make our players thick and confident. Finally we find a really good ref who don’t do dive.

  15. I love Ian Wright! Biased commentary taken to a whole new level!
    Le Coq gets MOTM.
    Nice!

  16. We criticize Wenger when we lose. Let’s praise him tonight, he kept Welbeck on when all of us where asking him to come off, and he ended up using his pace to score that wonderful goal. BIG UPS WENGER TONIGHT YOU ARE THE MAN

    1. agree. I thought Wenger f8cked it up again, but it worked really well today. Credit where credits due.

  17. we play the winner of bradford/reading, sweet,,, best moments? valencia trying to keep up w Sanchez, or Ox threading the needle to Nacho, or Giroud tracking back on 94′ and dispoccessing, Welbec getting the winner, Santi’s defensive pressure, sublime match,

  18. Rooney spent more time trying to get players booked, sent off or non excistant penalties

    1. @cheeterspotter
It did seem sort of sad that they were relying on dives and trying to get our players sent off in order to win at home. As if they knew they were gonna get beaten…

    1. That humour…:D I gotta work tomorrow but right now I feel like cracking open some cold ones and celebrating! OOO TO BE A GOONA

  19. MOTM Jones or whoever the hell made that suicidal back pass….

    YYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

    ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Thank you wenger and the players for the victory.
Wenger pls make some wonder magic for the Monaco match and I will never say wenger out again.

  21. So proud of the team and Wenger today!!! Fought hard, but I gotta say the referee was magnificent. DISGRACEFUL MAN U, so happy to see you bitches leave your own stadium in misery. We’ve done it today, and it’s only going to give us more confidence, COYG!!!!!!

  22. That Rooney goal was all Koscielny…. If it would have been Mert he would have been slaughtered already by the fans in this page…

ANYWAY F&^%$#$ offf haters we are back to Wembley!

    1. Watch it again Kos was front post man , Mert marking no one he should of come closer, but nothing negative today we beat the sssssshhhhht

  23. I like how Wenger said ” Thank you for giving us Danny Welbeck”, as he shook hands with Van gaal.

  24. At Last!! We did it!! We got one over Manutd.
Thanks lady luck for that sublime pass from Velancia.

  25. Arsenal maintained a high level which was good to see, I fully expected them to drop their bundle in the last ten minutes but they didn`t. Only criticism, I prefer Ospina to Szczeseny.
Arsenal v Liverpool semi would cause an earthquake in my house. The wife is a Scouse and I`m from the Seven Sisters.

  26. I feel i have not celebrated this Win Enough. My body keeps feel uneasy. THAT SURE IS A SIGN OF VICTORY. UP GUNNERSSSSSSSSS. What planet is Degea from.

  27. Hahahaaaa!!!!!!
Arsenal fans overboard. We have broken several records this season.
we will beat Monaco, and Chelsea, then we will be number two in epl. In Champions legue we will go till final. Mark my words!!

  28. These days Alexis is getting too much greedy…he was doing some unnecessary dribbling..Over all i’m so facking happy! We could have score 3-4 goals..a win is a win! after all at Oldtraford !

  29. Monreal was class. Coq shut em down and
Wellbeck made and took a rare chance.

Let’s hope it’s the start of something good for him.

    COYG!!!

  30. I’m glad we showed that Man U are no longer the force they were, and the referee confirmed that by punishing their pathetic attempts to score a free kick or penalty. In days of old they would have been given one of those..

Some great performances from the team, notably Cazorla, Monreal, Coquelin, Mertesacker….well pretty much every one of the starting 11 had a decent game.

The ref also had a great game, and I for one would like to see more refereeing like this, to stamp out the dark diving side of the game.

A win that should boost our confidence and mental strength for the remainder of the season. 😀

  31. United fans singing “Same old cheating Arsenal” and they have 2 players sent off for diving. Welbz scoring the winner at Old Trafford. Ozil running the midfield like a Boss. All priceless!!!!

  32. ManU fans giving Van Gaal stick for unnecessarily changing a working plan after first half. And we here keep giving Wenger stick for not making subs at all. The grass is always greener on the other side eh?

  33. The referee made some important decissions in that match especilly when they wanted to con him by their diving tricks. Good performance by all the players and good tactics from wenger.

  34. tonites entertainment in san francisco, 1 cuban cigar, 1 six pack of beer, rewatch recording of arsenal thumping Man Utd, then watch Arsenal thumping City for the 10th time for an encore, gonna be a great nite!

  35. Bradford or Reading NEXT in FA Cup
And maybe Liverpool in the Final

We MUST win this trophy now

It would be cool for Alexis to lift a trophy in his first year and for us to win 2 FA Cups back to back.

    COYG

  36. Wicked game and a great win.

Seriously though, do you even re-read articles before you post them?

  37. If le prof wins us the fa cup again and ends up 3th/2nd place in the pl i’m gonna laugh at all the AW haters i met in the last 10 years. Arsenal IS in a new era now. city win, united. Only have to beat chelsea at home now and we have the confidence to win the pl next season. COYG

  38. Love the comments.

I LISTENED to the game on satellite radio while traveling and the obviously-manu commentators rarely mentioned Monreal at all. I had to read the comments here to find out the real story.

  39. De Gea is insane good. What a keeper he is. Cong to Danny and all Arsenal fans. Manure tryed to be manure but their bs didnt worked today so gbye you fu%ckers.

  40. Man U might have to sell De Gea for $100 million and buy 4 players.

Hard choice, their best player may have to go.

    1. @ArseneISYourDaddy
IF one of the big 2 in Spain come knocking, he’s gone quick fast and in a hurry…

  41. Welbecks face at the final whistle was like ‘oh sh*t what have I done? !’. Great team performance memorable moment for me was santi tackle near the half way line. Only negative ox is likely out for a while he was immense before he got injured. Maybe theo will get some gane time now? Hope mu fail to get top 4 and de gea pushes for a move back to spain, what a keeper if not for him wed have 3 or 4 tonight. Well done michael oliver, referees afraid to make bold decisions at old trafford? Not anymore! 🙂

  42. @fredcowardly. Let’s get pass reading/bradford first, remember the game against wigan last year. Also feel its a little harsh on villa and Blackburn to suggest at this stage pool will be in the final

    1. I said “Maybe”. Liverpool is the second highest ranked team left in the tournament. And it would be awesome to play them IF we win the Semis

In fact it’s possible for Liverpool to lose in the replay. But nothing wrong with predictions. If you look up I’m not the only one thinking about beating our next opponents and playing Liverpool in the final. Again, we may lose in the Semis but nothing wrong with being excited and making predictions

Anyway, don’t take comments so seriously. At the end of the day it’s more important for the players to concentrate on each game, one game at a time.

  43. I’ve said in the last 24months it is a new era for Arsenal FC. We can now compete in the business of all matters Football.

In that time we can add winning at Old Trafford again after too long without and a trophy. Let’s now add another trophy.

    1. I am starting to change my mind on Coquelin. I felt he was a squad man, but if he carried on beyond just playing on confidences and belief and a whole season like this Thant why not? Why not become our sniper in defensive midfield.
    2. Welbeck had a tuff match, but he showed what it takes to be a top forward and score when it matters. He pasted another educational moment in his young career that will only make him better.
    3. Another to do thing ticked off our list of little strides needed to feel the belief we can go on and do more of in the seasons ahead.
    4. We played well, not great but well and sometimes that is better than a sporadic performance. Today we showed we can get through big games with the ability to read the game and come out with a positive.

And finally, congratulations to Wenger for a historic victory which will live in the memories for a long time to come….

    1. not good enough…

not a big name big tag or big game player…..not big and strong either

Wanayamam, Schenerlin or Matic would have done a better job than Coq
