Merry Xmas Groundhog Day – Wenger is still holding us back

Arsenal fans – I have one word and one word only – deluded! That is what you have to be if you believe that Arsene Wenger will ever deliver something at Arsenal different from fourth at best. I don’t even watch some of the games, because I know how they will end and I kinda want to spare myself the misery.

Alexis and Ozil will be gone in the summer, but have no fear, Arsene will be here.  He’s the oldest manager of any managing a top club. We have played all of the the new Top Four teams  and we have gained just one point. The second half of the season has started and we got one lucky point against Liverpool, and if we hadn’t beaten our closest rivals Tottenham and Burnley we would be even further down the table! I hope every year that people would open their eyes, but it just doesn’t happen and it won’t happen again. I have one Christmas wish and one only. Have Arsene gone at the end of the season.

Let’s have something new in 2018. I’ve seen this movie so many times before. Unlike ‘home alone’, I don’t enjoy seeing it every year, but just like it, I have no choice. Arsene is responsible for every single employee at the club, including the CEO Ivan, who was practically appointed by him.

I see no other person who should be held responsible for the bad results. Feel free to disagree. The results and the table speak for themselves. I wish you all a happy Christmas and better memories than the one Arsene is giving you every year.

  1. I’m one of the biggest wenger fans of all time but seriously I hope that around March we announce that WENGER WILL NOT SEE OUT HIS CONTRACT AND LEAVE-A MUTUAL DECISION FROM THE CLUB AS WELL AS THE MANAGER CONSIDERING OUR DROP IN STATUS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF SEASONS. But I hope that we win the cup trophies to give him a perfect send off. Get a new manager in and begin a new journey to see where it takes us. I don’t mean that wenger goes for good-he can still be with us in some mentor role or something like that coz he is a LIVING LEGEND FOR A MANAGER,NOT ONLY FOR ARSENAL FOOTBALL CLUB BUT FOR THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL AS A WHOLE…

    1. You can be sure if he wins a couple of cups he will be here next season (because empty handed might not even do it). I’d like him to step down but I would like us to win cups despite this, I hate to see us fail. Some will say it’s still failure, I don’t agree, there’s total failure and there’s it’ll have to do. It might be age that gets him out the door in the end, but he’s fairly fit for his years all the same.

  2. Spot on article. We still have obvious problems with Kroenke even after Wenger leaves, but no doubt that our manager is the MAIN problem.

Whilst the board haven’t backed Wenger enough in the transfer market, they have allowed him to keep all of his best players, and slowly build on that each season over the last 4/5 years, yet we’ve regressed in the league, and in Europe. This summer, the board even allowed Wenger to keep Wilshere, Sanchez, and Ozil, knowing that ALL of them can walk out of the club for free. They also gave Wenger a prolific striker (in fact the best striker we could have possible have got with no CL football), and the best LB/LWB from the Bundesliga (even better than Alaba), yet we’ve been shocking in the league, and thank goodness we have no CL football to get humiliated in again.

Please bring in Simeone, so our defenders can get some much needed coaching, and organisation! Fed up of watching our defending cost us every season!

    1. Is it us regressing or is others progressing. We finished on similar points last season that would usually get us CL football. We usually get similar points in each half of season, and the teams we find tough and easy to play against is usually the same systems,, might change a bit but that depends on style of play and their manager. Our football has regressed, we no longer have a midfield that passes best or one of the best. Our defending lately is very poor even by our standards, between Xhaka Koscielny and Alexis they are slowly turning the knife, they’re meant to be some of our bedrock those three. I’d say you may be right about regressing but more in a prediction kinda way.

      1. It’s a mixture of what you’ve said. Some have progressed, but we’ve definitely regressed. You have to consider we’re losing more games (9 defeats in the league last season, and 5 already this season), conceding more goals, the performances seem to be getting worse (even in victory), and all of this has happened whilst Wenger has strengthened the squad year, after year. He’s kept his best players, spent money on quality players, so he’s had continuity, but where has it got us?

On the flip side we’ve won 3 FA cups in 4 years, after a 9 year dry spell, so I guess there has been some progression, but we’re not seeing it in the difficult competitions like the league, and CL.

  3. ‘I don’t even watch some of the games’. Nott my idea of a fan. And where is the logic in a comment like, ‘If we hadn’t beaten our closest rivals Tottenham and Burnley we would be even further down the table’? You might just as easily say that if we hadn’t beaten Chelsea we wouldn’t have won the FA Cup.

      1. That could’ve been the point, if he’s a clever one this could be him sneakily trying to say people who want Wenger out are not real/die hard fans. Think about it, why would you say you don’t watch the games anymore if you wanted people to listen seriously to what you were saying. I’d say this lad has more than one pseudonym.

  4. I share your Xmas wish. We can wish all the top players in the world to Arsenal, but what really could make a difference, is a new manager. The sooner the better.

    1. Even if they beat arsenal it wouldn’t make a difference, the board will never sack Wenger…..I’d rather Arsenal win.

      1. I didn’t say I want Arsenal to lose
I said I “expect” Palace to beat us coz they are the home side & our away record has been woeful
What does this have to do with Wenger being sacked or not?!

  5. Article is just as depressive and lost as club is and makes everyone of us, articles there to make rating as everyone else but nothing in it ; so we become the writers and readers of us writters, positive end of this blog’s concept..One dumb article and we do 20 articles called comment.

So, this an article about spirituality, space our team and us fans are at by a total disaster in football and team management but great one in term of business…

    Peace

  6. Personally I wouldn’t give him till the end of the season, yes he took us to another level but sentiment apart the level we are at now is only heading downwards. Bring in another manager before Jan and give him what ever funds we have available to spend this transfer window, I wouldn’t trust Wenger with it, he wouldn’t be able to find anyone better than the players we have, as he’s more than happy with the squad we’ve got. Players like Goretzka are there for the taking but he’ll pass on it as we have already have Wilshire and Ramsey that can play that position.

  7. Darrens article is such a relief to read. Surely ANY Gooner with a brain and normal eyesight MUST see how all the “should we buy him or drop him or do this or that tinkering with the team” is all a complete waste of time while Wenger still stays. HE IS THE ENTIRE PROBLEM! Though I also loathe the absent and uncaring owner and lickspittle board with a passion too, it is WENGER who buys and sells and plays players, in the wrong position too, so often and it is WENGER who refuses, flatly refuses, and for a decade past to do ANYTING about our joke defending. Not just the defence but the solidity in the team which when correctly done(by other managers) involves defending from the front and keeping correct shape. Wenger is acting like a novice despite his many decades in managing. He refuses – or to be honest, simply has no idea or even any intention – to coach defence. Nor will he let those who DO know how to coach, do it for him . His wilful decade long refusal to install a proper, mobile, thinking, powerful, CDM has become a farce running long enough to fill a West End theatre. But THIS farce, unlike the West End’s is tragic , not funny. His arrogance that he knows best and that ONLY he knows, shows a man whose mentality is akin to Donald Trumps in his delusions and refusal to face reality and to see what EVERYONE ELSE BUT HIM can see. Virtually all respected professional pundits including many ex-Arsenal players want him gone and realise he is taking us backwards. Likewise virtually all us fans -apart from the likeable but foolish Ty – on Arsenal Fan TV think likewise. This ridiculous farce has been going on far too long to be allowed to continue. It is now costing us fans, witness those season tickets holders no longer coming and the attendance- even the lying OFFICIAL ONE – is now regulary given as approx 59400, instead of 60200 as previously. Fans are demoralised and for some the love of club is dying never to return. When a clubs owner and board allow that lifeblood to be cut off, WHICH IS HAPPENING BIT BY BIT, they put our very existence at risk. People, do not be fooled into thinking it cannot get worse, because it is and will get worse still if he stays and unless the club changes direction at 180 degrees. Forest won the European Cup twice in 1980+1981, and now languish in the lower reaches of the Championship(really the second division) and the legendary Clough took them down before retiring. NO CLUB has a divine right to stay at the top strata even Man Utd WERE RELEGATED IN THE EARLY 1980’S(approx, not sure of exactly the year) and any business let alone football club that treats its customers with such disrespect and disdain(like Sir Chips at the AGM, REMEMEBER) and as Kroenke and the board too are doing , year after year, WILL pay the awful price. That fate is the law of life for incompetant and arrogantly run entities. Arenal is no exception. Change course please, TODAY, and start acting like the great club we were and should be, but are not right now. Get all the cancer CUT RIGHT AWAY FROM THE FLESH RIGHT NOW and start with the most malignant tumour of all, WENGER!

  8. The only problem is the manager. Get him all the best players and with Wenger there we will still fail. Blame the board for extending his contract for another two years. He won’t leave as he says he always fulfil his contract. We have to sack him for the team to move on.

  9. Its looking like the only way we will get Wenger out of our club, is to get our pitch forks and fire torches, march down there and drag him out ourselves.

  10. Rediculous article, same old, same old and we don’t need to keep reading about it. Yes I want Wenger gone and believe this is his last season as boss but having every other article saying the same thing is boring mate. Boring boring Arsenal was the chant and now it’s boring boring Just Arsenal.

    1. GB .Poor you! Having to be bored while some of us, who you admit agreeing with , actually try to increase the pressure on our club to act sensibly and thus sack Wenger. Most on here care passionately for our clubs future health and actually WANT to help , in whatever small way we can to force necessary change. How pitiful for you personally that you find that boring. And how small minded. Think about what you have said and how small minded you appear ! IF you are REALLY A TRUE FAN!

  11. Darren N,
I understand your frustrations and distress. It’s normal for one to become frustrated and distressed if it’s increasingly looking like he’ll not fulfil his hopes and aspirations after a long pursing of them.

But I have good news for you Darren. Arsenal who won Titles before under this same Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger can still win Titles again. In fact, Arsenal will win Titles this season under the watch of Arsene Wenger as manager.

Arsenal will for sure win the Carabao Cup and the Europa League Cup this season. For, the Gunners are more than hungary than ever to win these
two major Cups Titles this season. And they may even retain the FA Cup to further boost their FA Cup win standing.

As for the Premier League Title win, a miracle can still happen for Arsenal to win it this season as we are still mathematically in the race despite Man City having an arrogant campaign so far this season in the Premiet League.

  12. Samuel , Do you have the phone number of good shrink? Hope so for your mental health. Seems like you have the same disease as Wenger – delusions of adequacy!

  13. John, I always enjoy reading your contributions as I think you’re about the same age as me (although I’ve only been a supporter since the 79 FA cup final- not being a UK citizen is my excuse). You write well and from the heart. Your last article reminds me of a very good piece by Ed Smith in the New Statesman in September about Wenger’s wilful blind spots-worth a read if you haven’t seen it.
