Monreal leaps to defence of ‘quiet man’ Ozil

As if the Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil didn’t have enough problems with the media in Germany after the World Cup, and now the English media are joining in and inventing stories about the highest-paid star at the Emirates. Nacho Monreal is the latest Gunner to defend Ozil. He said: “People have been a bit unfair with him. He is a very famous player and obviously people love talking about him. Recently, it is always bad things. Like last time, he was sick and that’s why he didn’t play.

“People started to invent that he had a problem with the manager. It wasn’t like that. He got a cold, he was sick, that’s it. That’s why he didn’t play.”

Ozil is constantly lambasted for his easy-going style and his languid body language, but Monreal says we should just accept that this is his personality and he can’t change that. “People must understand that every player is completely different,” Monreal said. “He is like that [quiet] and 10 years ago he was the same. So you can’t expect on the pitch that he starts to fight, to talk with the referee because he never did it. He is not going to change in this case.

“The important thing is he plays at his highest level, gives a lot of assists, scores a lot of goals and basically helps the team. That’s what he knows. He doesn’t know how to go up to a player and grab him by the throat.”

It is good to see our players defending Ozil, as the German himself rarely gets involved and tries to avoid the media as much as he can. That’s another reason people think he is aloof, but I think he is just averse to all the unwanted publicity.

What do you think?

  1. I agree with monreal to an extent, ozil isn’t going to change his style as its part of who he is but his performances haven’t been good enough of late either which i think should rightly be criticised. Personally, i have only been critical of his performances and i think most fans are too. Ozil will fit in more with a dominant team which we aren’t so until our team get better in overall quality, i don’t see the criticism stopping because ozil can’t carry a team on his back and he shouldn’t be asked to because he isn’t that type of player. The problem is we are all expecting so much from him due to his wages and status in the team.

  2. Ozil must be sold in January, because he has been aging badly with deteriorating condition and skills

Time to get someone younger, hungrier for major trophies, more energetic and more skillful

    1. its unlikely to happen unless fans protest with an empty stadium

or one of the fans that doesnt like Ozil and Xhaka becomes the new manager of Arsenal

  3. “People must understand that every player is completely different,” Monreal said. “He is like that [quiet] and 10 years ago he was the same. So you can’t expect on the pitch that he starts to fight, to talk with the referee because he never did it. He is not going to change in this case.”
    Tell em bro….
But I’m hoping to see improvements with his performances, long as he keeps performing for us, the media, Germany and the bullies can F*ck off

  4. Ozil is gone he’s an slightly above average player in a average team

He wouldn’t even make the bench of the invincibles

  5. Let’s just ignore the views of professional teamates, who train with him every day.
Let’s just ignore their views regarding his match day performance/contribution.
Let’s just ignore the views of our coach Emery, who considers him a valuable part of his plans for the club.
After all, what do they know?

      1. Yeah but Ken, he’s not likely to say otherwise and even if Emery had a problem with him he’s not gonna have a blast at him openly in the media. Confidence too, there’s plenty of reason to say nice things but when is a teammate or manager going to go through the media in having a dig. I believe there was a bit of a tiff between Ozil and Emery, Ozil taking another sick day this early after the summer was a bit much. These guys are being looked after very well their own medical team and all. I reckon Emery was not happy about either Ozil’s commitment during game or else his commitment in practice, and I certainly think he was not happy about the sick day but he couldn’t call him a liar with it being so early in his AFC hot-seat. I have no proof and its speculation but I reckon there’s something to it all same.

        1. As to when is a manager going to go through the media digging out a player: look no further than the special one mourinhoc because that never backfires :’D

      1. Breakonthrough, some good points giving a different point of view.
But I would ask you to look at the different way Ozil is being protrayed by his team mates compared to the Sanchez situation.
It was very obvious that Sanchez had fallen out with at least some of his colleagues by their reluctance to join in his goal scoring celebrations, as an example.
I have seen none of that from any player regarding Ozil.
The attitude problem plus his lack of defending skills, contnually highlighted by the media and SOME fans on here, doesn’t seem to cause any kind of issues within the team.
Could it be, as Monreal has stated, that they actually know and appreciate his value and the work he puts in?
I do take your point that no player would go public to denounce a fellow team mate, but there are much more subtle ways to show their feeling on the pitch.
I believe that Monreal is trying to tell us exactly what they think of Ozil and perhaps we should at least acknowledge the fact that he feels strongly enough about this continued lambasting of the man to go public in his support.

        1. Hey Ken.. Don’t you think the players hated Sanchez and felt uncomfortable with him unlike Ozil because Sanchez was a winner and always challenged them to show more courage and confidence because Sanchez epitomizes that… Ozil can’t say that to them because it doesn’t show that himself…..Sanchez was fed up with their weak mindset which was clearly shown to all

          1. Now that’s a really good point you make and one to be considered.
So much better than your Kos rants.

However I have more faith in Emery than you seem to have.
If Ozil is such a bad influence wherever he plays, why has he always played for top clubs and won a world cup winners medal, plus numerous German caps and player of the year?
It seems you have a terrible view of the way our club is/was run.
Wonder what’s gone wrong with “superman” at Unt then?
They must also be running scared of him.
By the way, have you answered Ozziegunners questions about your list of players and where the money is coming from?

          2. Chiza, if Sanchez epitomises winning, how come we have not seen it at Man United? One thing we should appreciate is that Emery is a new manager at Arsenal. the Arsenal that has had the same manager for 22 years. The rest of the footballing World want Arsenal to ‘fly’ high at the very top even with the history it has had.
I would say, we should give everybody in the technical team time, including Ozil.

    1. @ken1945.
I remember people used to listen to Wenger and our players when they used to try and back the likes of Giroud, Elneny, Xhaka, Mertesacker, Walcott, Fabianski etc..

Of course you expect teammates to back each other. My family will tell you how it should be accepted of me consistently being late and underperforming at my job etc. They will always back me.

  6. Ozil’s technical abilities and vision are top level. Give him a few games with both Laca and Auba and we’ll see goals galore. Sad to see that it’s always other players supporting players through tough times and not Arsenal’s execrable “fans”. These people only know how to attack and tear down their own club. They wouldn’t recognize solidarity and class to save their lives. You wouldn’t want an Arsenal fan to fight alongside you in the trenches, all they would do is bitch and complain until they literally shot themselves in the arse.

    1. People ripped the likes of Giroud to pieces. And it was mostly the Ozil fanbase. They blamed Giroud, Welbeck, Walcott, Mertesacker, Ramsey etc for all Ozil’s problems. Donkey Giroud, Lampost, Championship level Giroud, etc.

Hardly anyone came out to back him apart from his manager and teammates.

  7. This is the 3,954th article
    about Ozil this season.
We really need to hear more
    about Rob Holding’s pet hamster.

    1. Ramsey and Ozil are the two that split fans the most, maybe then Bellerin. You know with either of those articles that there’s allot of hate, strong word but people use strong words against them both.

      1. john hodges, i notice that Ozil is still being knocked over there in Germany, by the likes of Low etc.
Why should it matter how many articles we have on this site regarding him then?
The awful treatment of him by the German football federation, players and media is not going to disappear while they keep bringing it up is it?
Unless, like barryglik, your level of debate centres around Rob Holding’s pets?

        1. Rob Holdings pet Hamster is called Dick and Rob Holding’s Dick loves to be —- blankety blank ?

Now can we talk about Ozil again it’s less intresting

  8. Ozil is the type of player who needs an arm around the shoulder when things are going wrong, he seems to be the very sensitive type but can’t blame him for the National Retirement as he was made the scapegoat when all the squad was terrible. All statements say the same from players that the treatment he is getting Is unfair & I agree.

Mesut is still our big player, yes he hasn’t been firing in all cylinders since he signed the new deal but with Unai managing him & having Laca/Auba infront of him things might start to click. His vision can’t be matched by most top players in the world, he needs a system to get the best out of him as he is a offensive player NOT defensive, he needs the support if Torreira & Guendouzi for protection to make up for his lack of defensive help. Why have we all stopped supporting Mesut when he needs the Arsenal Fans to back him?

Yes he needs to get better even he probably knows that as does the rest of the squad but give them all this season to see where they are at ad a unit under Unai.

If Ozil plays like he can then we have a force of an attack to be scared of, all that’s missing is a tricky winger to get in behind.

      1. ??Ozil is being criticized on many sides and needs Arsenal’s and fan’s support to prove the doubters wrong by doing his talking through his football.

        1. I reckon its only a matter of time before almost every move has Ozil somewhere along the line of it. He’s a fairly deceiving player, I’ve watched games where I thought he done ok or worse but then I’d read the after game stats and he’d have had an excellent game going by all the touches, successful passes, and chances created. He can be a bit of a conundrum at times. Arsene always seen it, it shows how focused he is at watching games, he’d know it before the stats came out. Some people are better spectators than others. Like when I see someone putting up their ratings for every player, I do be thinking how the heck can someone be accurate in watching every players game closely. The most I can usually watch and try to be as accurate as I can, is about three or four players, depending on the game I might get a fifth one. Some people are more focused spectators that the average fan, I’m not one of them, but I don’t think too many are.

  9. Why it’s so hard for us to support our player, only arsenal fans l know always complain about there player while other fans support there player.

  10. Why do people keep making excuses for Ozil? Many so called top players throughout the years have adapted their game ans style. It seems like the Ozil fanbase will make excuses for him to the day he leaves Arsenal. Cesc was played in 3 different positions, Cm, No10 and false No9. Santi played wide, No10 and CM. Silva played CM, No10 and Wide. KDB plays CM, AM, Wide, Hazard plays everywhere along the Front line. Iniesta played Cm, AM, Wide etc. Messi plays everywhere across the frontline. Modric plays CM, AM and B2B etc..

But we are told that Ozil can only play in one position and that is it. So this makes him world class and one of the Top 5 best player in the Emirates era so far. If some of us label him as one dimensional his fanbase gets sensitive about it.

Ozil is the most underwhelming so called world class player I have ever come across in my life.

  11. Enough with this Ozil stuff… Arsenal need a new powerful no10..who is full of pace, trickery and enthusiasm..e. g hazard, coutinho,de bryune, isco, thiago alcantara…in their best forms all these players are far better than Ozil even when Ozil is in his best form.. ..anybody who denies this fact is just biased and not a true fan of arsenal….if Emery wants to succeed he needs to get a new10…if someone is good enough people never doubt them……why is Ozil always questioned?..is because he is not good enough….do you see hazard, coutinho,de bryune, etc questioned this way??……. Arsenal fans we need to be honest….we need a new 10!!

    1. Chiza, are you going to put up the money to attract any of your nominated players to the Arsenal, because there’s not much chance of scrooge Kroenke providing the funds?

      1. Like seriously ozziegunner?… You believe arsenal don’t have the money to get a good 10..??……if arsenal can bring out 35m for a xhaka..you think we can’t cough out over 45m for a thiago alcantara.. That’s a big lie….even kroenke is willing to splash out the money once Emery says he no longer wants ozil and prefers to get a new 10

        1. Chiza, on what basis are you calling me a liar; because even me being 66 years old, you wouldn’t do that to my face. And you say you don’t insult people!
Please confirm that Thiago Alcantara would be available to Arsenal for £45 million; why would he leave Bayern Munchen and would they allow him to leave?
Given the priorities for players in other positions, a £70 million transfer budget will not go far. More would probably be available from player sales, but Arsenal is fast running out of ssleable players. Where will Ozil for example find a club to match his wages?
Yes, Arsenal has the financial resources, but Kroenke, based on what we have seen of his performances as major shareholder of Arsenal and the owner of his US sports franchises, he does not invest in players. This will potentially get worse at Arsenal wnen it passes to full private ownership, because scrutiny of income and expenditure will be limited.

  12. Three out of our four star players are entering 30 next year….. Oil will be 31 by next year, aubameyang 30 by next year, mikhitaryan 30 by next year…..that’s worrisome……we need to start thinking about the future and start freshening up the squad….oldies can’t play a pressing game.. Emery should know this… Take for example guardiola he came into man city and noticed there were alot of oldies and he got them out in his second year so he can play his game….only aubameyang should be allowed to stay because he is a finisher more like an Aguero….ozil body language will not even help him when he gets older…..we need to start thinking about the future and start bringing in young players that can play the fast game

    1. Chiza, you are right; however Arsenal will have to depend on the U23’s or hope that Swen and Raul can identify and sign some untapped gems, because a £70 million transfer budget won’t even replace Aubameyang.

      1. Ok so what you are saying is we need to replace the “older” players in the squad. So that’s Cech Lichstiener Monreal Sokritis Koscielny Mykitarian Ozil .So we suddenly find we have to replace these players with who?We have little money to spend But let’s say we get m from Kroenke next season and we go for quality replacements.I will leave the GK out as we have Leno Martinez Mackey so we will make do with those three.A replacement for Lichstiener and back up for Bellerin?Lets say £10m.Monreal replacement and competition for Kolasinac?Again let’s say £10m.Sokritis AND Koscielny?Lets go for a bit of quality.Mustafi was circ £35m So two at that price is £70m.Mykitarian?So if we bracket him as a Winger/midfielder with ability like The Ox that’s £40m of anyone’s money.Ozil? You are on record @Chiza as saying he is finished so to replace him with a Hazard/de Bryune/in this market?Got to be £80m.So do the sums.£210m.Ozils contract will prevent us getting too much money and Mykitarian will go for what?£10m?So basically the Club will need to come up with the best part of £180-200m to replace these players.
We have “potential” in some youth players who “COULD” come in.Nelson for Mykitarian.Chambers/Holding/Mava At CB.Bola at LB.Smith-Rowe and Eddie.AMN.But if your idea is to replace these players with youth then I’m telling you we would be more in trouble than what we are perceived to be now.
Sven M will need to find us the type of player he introduced to Dortmund but better. There is only so many Dembele quality players out there.
We need to be realistic.I would rather keep what we have (which is not as bad a squad as some like Merson would have you believe) and trust in Emery to improve the current squad to his game plans.
Arsenal Football Club has been in a worse state than we are in now I can tell you.We have the Stadium and Training facilities to match anyone’s.We have a fan base that are not as fickle as we believe we are-we just want the best for our Club.We have a Manager who seems to know what he is doing and financially we are able to compete with all but a few.
You no the saying don’t you?”You can’t put a price on experience”.Well we have lots of that and I wouldn’t go getting rid of them just yet. Those players may just prove to be the difference

        1. I get your point Phil…but one way or the other we have to replace them when the time comes… It doesn’t make any difference….should we wait till they become 35(with more emphasis on aubameyang, ozil and mikhitaryan)….i guess we are sorted in defense with osei tutu, mavrapanos, holding and chambers that’s why I didn’t mention our old players in defense but in attack we are not that lucky…that’s why we have to focus on the attack

  13. When you have become an iconic sportsman and very popular like Ozil is, but if something unusual happens to you, the journalists and the media will take advantage of it to have a go at you to their stories/news to sell to the reader and the listener to buy. So, Ozil is no exemption to this despite his mostly being a quiet person personality.

Being a gem that he has been identify to be and a jewel in the Arsenal first team that gets balanced better when he’s in the team playing, but his special unique game playing attribute has to be fore and most be well understood by his playing mates who should also work in tandem with him during playing before the high advantage he brings to the team can well be felt and of good result for Arsenal on the field of play.

  15. I’m really jealous of Liverpool and Tottenham ..their star players are still young and still have the energy to play the pressing game for the next couple of years…..
    Mane 26yrs(27 by next year)
    Firminio 27yrs(28 by next year)
    Salah 26yrs(27 by next year)
    Chamberlain 25yrs(26 by next year)

    Tottenham
    Harry Kane 25yrs(26 next year)
    Dele Alli 22yrs(23 next year)
    Lucas moura 26yrs(27 next year)
    Eriksen 26yrs(next year 27)
    Son 26yrs(next year 27)

    Arsenal
    Aubameyang 29yrs(30 next year)
    Ozil 30yrs(31 by next year)
Mikhitaryan 29 yrs(30 by next year)
    Lacazette 27yrs(28 by next year)
This is really worrisome….it goes to show how we have being so poor with our transfer business…Liverpool and Tottenham are clubs that we can compete financially with and dare I say that we have more money than them.. So how come they could come up with solid young players like these without spending much… O God help arsenal!

      1. Chiza, could you please, please, please reply to ozziegunners question regarding funding of the players you want to replace Ozil?
Don’t forget that you won’t get much money when you sell Ozil, as ( in your opinion) he’s to old now.

        1. You believe arsenal don’t have the money to get a good 10..??……if arsenal can bring out 35m for a xhaka..you think we can’t cough out over 45m for a thiago alcantara.. That’s a big lie….even kroenke is willing to splash out the money once Emery says he no longer wants ozil and prefers to get a new 10…we can get at worst 25m from a European club and over 25m from an Asian/arab/us rich club…..let’s not deceive ourselves we can’t continue this way with Ozil..we need a consistent ten that we won’t question every week.. We need to focus our energy on something else for God’s sake

      1. mr. ken 1845, because all team mates will stand up for each other . this was driven into all players by the former arsenal manager who was finally booted out of our club. thats why , sir.

    1. Of course gearoid de burca..what else would monreal say?? ……will he come out and say Ozil is not consistent enough which is glaring to see…. I’m tired of Ozil to be honest…..i can’t just wait for Emile Smith Rowe to mature up and show us what a 10 can do….. Really tired of Ozil inconsistent style

  16. chiza mate, i am actually agreeing with you on my previous comment regarding monreal. all these team mates will stand up for each other , regardless. strange though, when a team mate leaves , that other players can change their minds regarding the departed player. somewhat two faced i would think.and i definately agree with you regarding ozils lack of intrest , pace , and general absence . he does not give a twopenny fcuk !!!.

    1. So why didn’t Monreal just keep quiet and say nothing?
What was the point, I ask you once again gdb, of Monreal coming out in public and saying this?
Wasn’t it to try and explain what he sees every day?
But of course your views are the ones that explain the facts regarding something you have no input into whatsoever.
What has the ex manager got to do with it?
We are talking about Monreal and Ozil here and one player has given his opinion on the other, as he has a right to do.
Suddenly we are doomed for the foreseeable future because of the age of our squad, Ozils perceived lack of everything to do with football and an ex manager who installed team spirit?
To overcome this, we are going to embark on a mission to save the club by selling players who, it seems, are worthless and buy better players with monopoly money?
What a load of bs and unrealistic expectations..
Whose going to buy these worthless players?
Whose going to give Sven the money to buy these new super hero saviours?
It’s easy to say Ozil can go to China for £20million, but what if he doesn’t want to?
I get so frustrated with these guys who believe they can solve everything with a few unrealistic platitudes and ridiculous accusations about our club.
If it’s so easy, take your FIFA exams and show the world what we’re missing!

      1. Well said buddy. Armchair coaches everywhere, Wenger is clueless, Emery does not know his players(or the players are Wenger’s players)!
        Oil is lazy blablabla.
How good are you in what you do? Football novices putting down people at the top of their career

      2. So in other words Ken…we should continue to allow underperforming and average players play for our prestigious big club just because our ambitions are so low and we don’t have the courage, zeal power end money to change them… Wow!!…impressive Ken!… really impressive Ken!…….. unlike gearoid de burca I won’t call you a sad old man but i would prefer you try to understand that you support ARSENAL and not Barsnley….. You got that??
And by the way Monreal was interviewed and thrown the Ozil question ..so he had to spit out a defense to make the interview worthwhile and to give confidence to Ozil….not because he doesn’t know the truth that Ozil is not performing… For God’s sake everybody knows Ozil has talent and they would continue to talk about that talent but he is not performing consistently with that money he is paid.. Period!

  17. ken 1845, what a sad old man you must be , you would argue with your own toe nails. but you wont get any arguement from me old timer. after all, sure tis only a game like .

    1. gearoid, what gives you the right to call ken1945 a “sad old man”?
You have no idea what ken has achieved in his life, however one thing that is evident is that he is a life long Arsenal fan with an extensive knowledge of football over many years.
By all means argue the point of view, but don’t demean your credibility by engaging in personal abuse. Chiza has already made himself out a hypocrite by lowering himself to personal abuse calling people liars.

    2. I may be evet
ything you say, gdb, but you know the most glaring thing in your reply?
You and your pal Chiza fail to answer any direct question.
Instead you ask another question, just goes to show your knowledge of football.
Just one other thing, I never bring age into any argument or discussion as it is not relevant.
However, as you have chosen to show your parents failure to bring you up to respect others I will make these observations.
Try to imagine your talking to your parents when you try to belittle someone.
Try to imagine how others perceive you from your reply.
Try to grow up and respect others.
Try to imagine actually supporting AFC for over sixty years through thick and thin.
Try to cut your toenails on a regular basis, as talking to them must surely be the only chance you have of conversing with something of the same level as yourself.
Now jump back in your pram, put your dummy in your mouth and give us grown ups a rest.

  18. jen1954, wow, felt like i was back in school there for a while . i repeat , you are a sad old man who would fight with his toenails . all i would like to know is , why you are so darn nasty dude ?. chill and relax, tis only a game , remember.i will go back into my pram as soon as you go into your retirement home jen, hows that , a deal ?>

    1. Can’t even get ken1945 name right enough said.
As I said to Chiza, gearoid even at 66 years of age he would not be game to insult me to my face. People like you throw around insults when you have the anonymity of the internet, face to face you would go to water.
