That’s OK. It’s nothing personal. He wanted to be reunited with his best mate Cole. Fair enough. We doin’t want to pay £120m for him. Also fair enough.
We’ll just have to beat Chelsea on the field and show that they are the past, and the future is Arsenal’s.

One thing I would say is that Chelsea are far better – or have far better people to negotiate and sign players. Berta is absolutely useless next to David Dein or Edu.
May I remind you that last summer was the same. We all complained that we weren’t making signings like others whereas Berta was carefully identifying where we needed to strengthen and ensured we were not ripped off – except in the case of Madueke.
What was the result? We won the league. and made the CL final.
So if you want a club that spends hundreds of millions buying duds just to make fans feel good, Chelsea is down the road
I’ll also add to this with regards to Madueke that we had needed an experienced backup for Saka for like 3 seasons, and obviously there just aren’t many elite players willing to take on a bench role. Spending there was probably considered a move to prevent Saka burning out.
Nwaneri was tried out for the backup role in the previous season. It worked pretty well for a while, but not over an extended period. And Dowman is still a kid. Madueke may not be elite, but he had shown occasional flashes of brilliance at Chelsea – even if inconsistently – so I think it was more of a risk management purchase with some potential upside if it worked out.
Even Madueke was a success. His selection as a direct quality substitute for Saka by the National Handler is enough as testament. It shows we made the right call. Noni held the forth well for Saka both in The AFC and Three Lions.

From a purely objective, cold-hard-footballing standpoint, leaving Aston Villa (who have Champions League football) or turning down Arsenal (a stable, established title contender with guaranteed Champions League) to join a Chelsea squad that has missed out on European football entirely for 2026/27 and spent four years in volatile transition is extraordinarily difficult to justify on pure “sporting ambition” alone. money, record fees, and long-term financial security are 90% of the equation. The PR lines about “the project” and “biggest club” are simply the standard window dressing required for the media unveiling. Every experienced sports journalist is well aware of that but because of access preservationand the need for engaging content, the press acts as a multiplier for this childish PR narrative.
You never know, we have a habit of hiring CFC flops, so he could be on our roster next/following season, then maybe he’ll say he’s happy to join the biggest club in North London.
