New formation why Arsenal won’t allow Gibbs transfer?

I must admit that I was very surprised to hear Sky Sports reporting that Arsene Wenger had rejected a bid thought to be around £10 million for the Arsenal and occasionally England left back Kieran Gibbs, despite the fact that it was from West Brom and the boss has suggested he will not sell to any other Premier League club.

Gibbs seemed to have slipped almost completely out of first team contention and was widely believed to be one of the Gunners heading for the exit door this summer. He was not taken on the tours of Australia and China and this seemed to confirm what everyone thought, so why turn down a bid for him?

Is it because Wenger thinks the 27-year old is worth more than West Brom are prepared to pay? Maybe, as the Evening Standard says that Arsenal value Gibbs at £15 million and that does not sound too much compared to the majority of transfer fees we have seen recently.

But if the academy graduate really is out of the first team frame you would think we would make a deal to free up the wages and the place in the squad, so I wonder if Wenger may just be thinking about Gibbs as the left sided wing back in the new back three formation, or at least as his second option after the summer signing Kolasinac.

Monreal looks set to be used as the left sided centre back more often than not so has the new Arsenal formation given Gibbs an Arsenal lifeline?

      1. @Daninho. What do you mean by Arsenal are Westham in disguise? Is it spending money carefully or being a mid table club? I’m curious, because I don’t see any similarity between arsenal and westham. Arsenal = big club. westham = small club

  1. Nacho on left of CB, he has lost pace visibly. Sead on left wing, he does amazing CDM type tackles and defending, along side a overlapping winger role. so he will suit there. I hope he is just holding out for more, as English players should fetch above the market value.

Chelsea sold/loaned lot of young English players, that is why they are falling short of the number and want Ox, we can not just move every average English player out and replace, because of the quota. May be AW is holding on for that too

  2. Gibbs is apparently earning over £60k per week; is injury prone;and has absolutely no positional sense meaning that his ability to defend somewhat lacking.Arenal should have taken the £10m from WBA as quickly as it was offered. He has never been good enough to play any worthwhile part in the Arsenal first team.If he does ever make it to another Premier League side I predict that he will be offloaded rather than renew a contract. Another player who has benefitted from Wenger’s ridiculous over loyalty to players who have never done anything on the pitch to merit such loyalty…Denilson, Almunia,Song and Diaby were previously rewarded in a similar way.
Along with Debuchy,Jenkinson ,Walcott and, unfortunately,Wilshire he needs to be sold on as quickly as possible.

    1. Arsene has stated that last few days of transfer window will be busy. A few weeks beflre that happens. Why sell now for less money. Watch a few of them go in the last couple of days. And maybe one or two more in.

  3. Sead Kolsanic was brought in to be the left side CB in the 3 at the back defense
He is an excellent defender. He is not the winger type

    Mustafi.. Koscielny… Kolsanic

Which is good because we need 3 strong defenders in defense

Gibbs and Monreal will be primarily LW but both can be LW and defender.

So if everyone is healthy I see Wenger wanting the following in 3-4-3

CB: Mustafi, Koscielny, Kolsanic, Holding, Gabriel
LW: Monreal, Gibbs, Welbeck, Iwobi, Alexis
    RW: Bellerin, Walcott, Alexis, Ramsey
CM: Cazorla, Xhaka, Coquelin, Ramsey, Eleny (Ox and Wilshere???)
    CAM: Ozil, Iwobi, Alexis
Strikers: Lacazette, Alexis, Giroud, Welbeck, Walcott

    1. He may have played that spot in pre season but we have been light in CB for pre season.
Seo has a lot to offer getting forward as well, scoring 3 and assisting 5 in the league and over 25 games.

To say he is not the winger type kinda suggests you have watched him for longer than I think you have, I see the stats and what I can find and my impression is that he has something to offer going forward and will be a threat from the left for us.

  4. Another tumbleweed day!!
I try and stay chilled in the transfer windows now but really based on that c*ap we saw against Chelsea have still not signed another one player at least? It’s clear that the midfield is lacking without sanchez/cazorla and neither can be relied upon this season for different reasons.
Unless we feed the supply to lacazette from quality players,(more needed in mf) well have another sanchez/perez situation on our hands before we know it.
Mahrez wants to play for us badly then sign him, about time a player desired to come to us rather than can’t wait to get out!

  5. Why should Monreal play LCB whiles we have other CB’s.The guy is solid defensively but I don’t view him as a CB long term. It’ll come back to haunt but at Arsenal I guess we wait for the mistake to happen first.I’d rather have Kolasinac playing LCB than Monreal.

  6. Well may be the fact that bellerin Gabriel, mustafi holding and chambers have yet to return to training and koscielny is suspended for a couple games, has made wenger want to wait until deadline day. I think he would rather sell jenkinson and Debuchy before gibbs. Also, he has probably deemed Bramall as not ready and rightly.so. We could even see kolasinac, Monreal and Gibbs all featuring vs Leicester.

Fact is gibbs is better than Bramall. Likewise Debuchy is a better option at centre back than Bielik, maitland-niles and elneny. I even think Jenkinson could well find himself thrown a lifeline before the deadline, especially if the ox moves on. All 3 could be used in the remaining pre-seasons and even in the first few matches. The squads are not finalised until after the deadline day window. Until then they are our players, we are paying their wages and they might be only options until finest returns for everyone.

Not what we all want to hear, but wenger has tried panic buying in the past and it has rarely worked out for him

  7. Tough one Monreal I have love he’s passion da guy loves arsenal and new system suits em perfect even going forward really has prop Gibbs gone if not monreal drop deeper I guess.

  8. i think there will be an interesting partnership on the left side of arsenal. Kolasinac and Monreal will become an interesting force on the flanks, Bramall development will be in the cup games and i hope he has put those mistakes behind and has made him stronger.

Gibbs is actually a decent left back and has improved in his game, would be a worthwhile buy for any team.
