Next Napoli boss expected to make a move for unhappy Arsenal star

Genaro Gattuso wants to sign unsettled Arsenal midfielder once he is named the new Napoli boss .

Arsenal could be set to lose Lucas Torreira as the unsettled Uruguayan continues to look for an escape route.

Torreira joined the Gunners after an outstanding World Cup campaign with Uruguay last year and he was one of the first names on the team sheet under Unai Emery.

However, he was frozen out by the Spanish manager this season and was played out of position when he was fielded.
He has reportedly been unsettled for some time now with his agent openly admitting that he didn’t enjoy being played out of position.

He has returned to the starting lineup under the interim boss, Freddie Ljungberg, but This is Futbol claims he may not remain at the Emirates for long.

The report claims that Torreira is Gattuso’s number one target.

Napoli fired Carlo Ancellotti on Tuesday despite their 4-0 win over Genk in the Champions Gattuso is set to take over from the former Chelsea boss on aaa six-month basis, according to Sky Sports Italy.

Torreira was a target of Napoli before he joined Arsenal. He was also courted by other Italian clubs like AC Milan, he seems to be an important part of Ljungberg’s rebuilding and we expect Arsenal to fight for him to stay.

  1. If they pay up a decent fee then so be it. I’m not too crazy about any of our current midfielders and would only be upset to see Guendouzi go seeing he is so young and has potential. The rest can be moved on if a good offer comes.

    1. Agree. All disillusioned players can leave to wherever they reckon as greener pastures

It would be a pity if Torreira leaves though, because he is one of the best tacklers and interceptors among our midfielders

But we could try Maitland-Niles in the middle after Xhaka and Torreira leave. I believe he would do great there like the Ox

      1. Maitland Niles can replace neither Xhaka nor Torreira.
He does not defend well enough to ever be a DM
His long passing and vision are not good enough to be a deep-lying playmaker.
That leaves at best one midfield spot and be sure that AMN ain’t getting it. We can do so much better there. He’d be better for a team like, say, Aston Villa.

Yeah, Torreira leaving right now makes no sense as he will be 24 in the summer and hasn’t been great recently. His value can increase AND he can wait and see how it would be under the new gaffer.

  2. This is the news I’ve been waiting for! Sell him quickly and get a proper DM once and for all. Tall, physically imposing and tough. Try for Ndidi, if we can’t get him then Declan Rice or Ruben Neves. We didn’t even try for Gana Gueye while he was at Everton and he used to be sooo good! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, snap up in defence, Tyrone Mings and Nathan Ake! Please these guys are good and will not be available for long!

    1. 👍 Torreira and his family have not settled well in London. The issues are outside football, so best to sell at a profit and upgrade.

  3. Torreira hasn’t been used properly. When he’s settled and playing to his best, he’s one of those players that will rack up similar numbers to all the best defenders/attackers in CM. Interceptions, tackles, blocks, he has this in his armory and he has a good to decent attacking game too, he can be a very useful player to a manager that can get him enjoying his football again. Is there a language barrier with Torreira, I really want us to see the best of him because I believe there’s a good chance that this could come back to haunt us if we give up on him too soon. Uru produce angry, crafty, feisty type players like Argy do at times too, we need to find out how to get the maximum from our diminutive destroyer.

  4. I hope we begin to use LT regularly in his best position. He is a beast for his national team. And was a beast for us until UE began to experiment with him. I love Gatusso as a player but he ain’t getting Torreira, he has to look elsewhere.

  5. I like the attitude of Torreria but I do not feel he is suited to the physical demands of the PL.I would sell him to Napoli for 30m and go for Decoure of Watford or Rice of West Ham.

  6. Yes sell Torreira.
Torreira is good in Italy because they play 9 defenders.
Serie A is all about ultra cautious, boring, cynical fouls and dreary slow attrition.
PL is much faster and players have to be able to transition more quickly.
Ndombele at Spurs Rodri at man City Fabinho at Liverpool are what we need.
Chelsea play three DMs Kovacic Jorginho and Kante.
We don’t really have even one decent DM.
We have not had a quality DM since Gilberto and maybe Flamini (in is first spell)
Arsenal under Wenger came to believe DM is an option rather than a necessity.
Xhaka is no longer captain so we can sell him too in the summer.
Mustafi and Luiz can go to Itaria as well and lik up with Mkhitarian.
I think Mesut will go to Turkey Schalke or the States.
So finally a new squad can be built next season.

  7. I am not sold on the merits of Torreira. I see him constantly on the ground, bowled over by NORMALLY sized, not even big sized opponets. His attitude is good but his size prevents him being effective enough. Kante is an exception and is a far better player than Torreira. We need a far stronger but just as determined DM.

  8. If anyone can get the best out of Torreira it is Gennaro Gattuso, a tough tackling defensive midfielder himself. Unappreciated here by many, he will be loved at Napoli. Hope whoever is/becomes our manager realises that when played in his correct position, as he is for his NATIONAL team, he is an excellent player. Good luck Lucas wherever you end up – and if you visit this site please take no notice whatsoever of the naysayers on here.
