“Not sure” Glenn Murray discusses Gyokeres after their time at Brighton

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray has reflected on his time alongside Viktor Gyokeres, offering a sceptical view of Arsenal’s decision to spend heavily on the Swedish forward.

Gyokeres arrived at Brighton as a promising youngster from Sweden, brought in after the club’s scouts identified his potential. However, his early years in England were challenging. The Seagulls sent him out on multiple loan spells, and he was eventually sold. It was at Coventry City where he truly began to establish himself, before his prolific form at Sporting Club propelled him into the spotlight.

Now back in the Premier League, Gyokeres will look to prove that he can deliver at the highest level and fulfil the promise that many felt he had during his early career.

A Striker with Unfinished Business

Gyokeres returns to England with a sense of unfinished business. His success in Portugal has reignited interest in his abilities, but the Premier League presents a different challenge altogether. The pace, physicality and defensive organisation in England are of a higher standard, and he will need to adapt quickly to make an impact for Arsenal.

The Swede is preparing intensely for life at the Emirates, fully aware that the goals will not come as easily as they did in the Primeira Liga. Supporters hope he can replicate his Sporting form and become a consistent match-winner in North London.

Murray’s Reservations

Murray, who was part of the Brighton squad when Gyokeres first arrived, has admitted that he was not especially impressed during their time together. Speaking via Give Me Sport, he said:

“I don’t think Viktor Gyokeres is the one, it’s such a big step. I was with him at Brighton and I never had him down to be a £64 million striker.

“When Ben White stepped into our first team, right away everyone knew how good he was, he was of that standard. When Viktor came in, it was more a case where you thought he was all right. I am not sure he suits Arsenal’s style, either.”

Gyokeres now faces the task of winning over his critics. Many will be watching closely to see whether he can thrive in England and justify his price tag. The surest way for him to silence the doubters will be to score goals consistently in Arsenal colours.

  1. OT: Looking at this Liverpool lineup and bench against Bournemouth, I think they are weaker than last season. Lost Jota, Nunez and Diaz. Spent over £300m and the only attacking options on the bench are Jones, Elliot, Chiesa and 16 year old Ngumoha. Even with Isak, they don’t scare me. Salah off to Afcon in January too. It’s going to be an exciting season.

    1. Have you seen 16 year old Ngumoha play, he’s brilliant, similar to our 15 year old Dowman, who’s on our bench?

      1. A preseason friendly is different from a premier League game. He is a brilliant young player. Liverpool is weaker now. Chiesa will also go back to Italy.

  2. So Glen Who? Thinks he is a dud and our greatest striker rates him. Sorry Glen WHO ARE YA WHO ARE YA!!!!

  3. Glen Murray criticises Gyokeres for his failings as a passing dribbling kind of player which Arsenal do NOT need because we have lots of those getting knocked over at every challenge !
Gyokeres will provide that UP FRONT bulldozer of a player which is exactly what the team needs.
I look forward to Gabriel Martinelli thriving alongside him.
