What’s been lacking is the final edge in a few games to get us over the line and win the league
The transfers this season have given us depth and now with Zubamendi Gyokeres and hopefully Eze shortly the game changers to do so.
I believe both you and the author are correct in different ways. You are correct that we have been the 2nd best club in the league for 3 yrs running at handling all of the various combined challenges. I believe the author is getting at what you expressed in your second sentence in that those few games you refer to were not so much against the better clubs but against those whom we should have beaten, at least on paper.
The thing that the article does not mention is that all clubs each season battle with the same challenge of being “consistent” within the season and that the most successful at doing so typically win the league (or in our case come close). From one week to the next, the results for each of the clubs is not entirely predictable because of many factors including playing down or up to the competition. Hopefully, the additional squad depth and abilities will get us over the line this season as I believe Eze would have done in at least one of those prior 3 seasons.

Last season was an outlier because of the huge problems with player availability, and our attacking options being completely destroyed. So to use it as evidence of inconsistency is ridiculous!
We have continued our brilliant record in big games, we finished 2nd again, which was a miracle by the way given the squad options, we progressed further in Europe AND made our first domestic semi in five years. How is any of that inconsistent?
We have shown nothing but consistency and progression over many years now.
Amorim has found out how to dominate our midfield at Old Trafford and I’m sure the managers of the other top EPL teams have also known how to win the midfield battle against Arteta’s tactics
Slot’s and Maresca’s tactics seem to have been cracked by the other managers too
The genius ones should be able to change their systems drastically in the beginning of every season to surprise the others. Guardiola seems able to do so this season and Arteta should also do it if he’s really smart
Having said that, I believe we won’t fall below the second place in the league this season, because Arteta’s inverted-fullback tactics and the squad built for those are almost perfect for a tough marathon like EPL
Strange comment. Whilst Man Utd has more possession they didn’t make the most of it and we won. So whilst as you say Amorim may have won the midfield battle ( I put tit down to our midfield 3 still adjusting rather than tactics!) it didn’t help them win the game !
We have won many battles over the years and yet only come away with a draw so doesn’t really equate.
You could also argue Arteta has already adjusted despite winning by buying Eze

@Gai, I am not sure ManU has finally cracked Arsenal midfield untill we play them at the Emirate. It was simply a bad day for Arenal the whole team played poorly. We couldn’t even score when we break away. Gai there was a time early second half they could even touch the ball in midfield for a spell A team with 0:1 set back as ManU at Old Trafford needed to fight. City can’t be rated just yet because Wolves has been bad tail end of last season and haven’t done well this season in transfer market.
Arteta should imo return to the 4:2:3:1 he used to convenient beat a possession based Athletic Bilbao. Our defence was well protected. Especially against top5 Epl teams. Arteta should evolve his tactics.

I may be slandered for this.
But the thing is, deep down I’m one of those that think we may need another manger to get us to that next level of wining major titles.
Arteta has tried his best for us and that is obvious. Going forward, imo he lacks what it takes to cross the line.
I don’t trust him to win us any major silverware with his style.

Problem is that we have been consistent. 2nd place 3 years in a row. We need to go a step further.
And with a great transfer window. The best in years. There is a good possibility that we can do it. Liverpool and City will be hard to beat but we will have the players (as long as they are fit for most of the season) to do it
We are consistently inconsistent at beating certain teams. Especially ones in the lower half of the table. And while our formation and tactics remain, we will continue to do so. The only thing Arteta has proved is, he can not deal with change and changing. And while we RELY on set pieces to cover our deficiencies, we will be consistently inconsistent.

Lots of potential positives in Eze joining but I worry that the midfield’s no show against Man.U. was not a one off bad day at the office but more a case of certain players being too slow and not up for a fight. Something definitely is not working. We are not talking bargain basement shopping here.. Rice, Zubamendi and Odegaard have cost decent money. Plus the financial outlay over Arteta’s tenure on Merino, Viera, Lokongo and Partey. It doesn’t necessarily suggest astute buying.
